We have replaced several of them. Another problem might be that there is no address line to support the 8X memory. The Maartists 4X did have a header for an 8X expansion, but I don't believe they were ever produced. We sold the Maartists products many years ago and the 8X was never mentioned. Incidentally, we have customers asking for the 4X which we have not had for some time now. If anyone has one or more available, we would like to hear from you. P.S. Keep up the good work, Garth. SO to have a 8x expander, you need a different or addition power supply, and you need to hack the OS (which no one has done). It's interesting to see the way the ASR deals with memory, as opposed to the EPS's. It's like the EPS's have a dedicated spot for the OS, and use overlays. The ASR seems to use all the memory as one pool, and loads the whole thing in. The ASR OS is bigger than the EPS's - and that's not even counting the Akai/Roland translation stuff (which added 33% to the OS). I do use OS 1.30 (this shipped with the SCSI interface when I bought it). Do you have anything else that you can test the SCSI controller with - an external SCSI hard disk for example, just to eliminate the fact that the problem could be with the interface. I don't have the number handy. Another option which was quite popular a couple years ago was the Nintendo system (which later came out with a PC version) called Music Time! or something (knowing my memory it isn't anything like that). They are both sort of juvenile but effective. They are not free, however, or even cheap, both being $50 to $100. The program is useful, I actually bought Level 2 because that better matches my ability. Anyway, it has reading and timing exercises and delves into some music theory, but it really is an adjunct to learning to play. No one wants to just play exercises, and that's all any music software can really offer. I suggest you would do well to get the software and learn the basics, maybe buy a book with some simple piano versions of songs you like to augment it. When you start to find you don't practice any more go sign up for some lessons, you will find the live teacher will make a huge difference to your playing and to your interest level. ============================================================================= This mailing list is processed through Majordomo at Oakland University. I had the same problem and contacted Gary Giebler. It turns out my problem was because I'm using disk compression (DriveSpace3 from Win95) on my hard drive. Apparently what happens is that the downloaded file is saved to my hard drive in compressed format, rendering it unable to be copied to a floppy. I'm sad and a little surprised to hear there are problems getting the sysex specifications of the Ensoniq samplers when that is so easy to get hold of in USA. Simon is writing from the UK according to his email adress. I have heard people have problems in other countries too. I don't know the distribution channels at all, but if you need someone to blame ( I always do:) I think you can put it on the people you have dealt with or your country's Ensoniq agent. If they are unwilling to help you, thats unheard of. I would threaten with playing my music outside their shop/door. ( In my case that would definitely have triggered instant first class service :-) You need to tell them to get the External Commands Specification for the EPS16+ Workstation from Ensoniq if they don't have it. It is reasonable that you pay postage charges, or pay for any Xerox copying, otherwise it is free from Ensoniq. So we have all paid for your copy and are thus anxious that you will get it. The Ensoniq samplers do not use a standard Midi sample dump, so you need the specifications to write a program. A simple program for doing what you want for your own use should be easy. If you want to expand on it you may perhaps find the C code Midi libraries for the EPS of some use >I know there is a program called ZeroX which does it >but it's way too much money - I'm >looking for a simple conversion kit. I've not heard of it. How much is way too much? Another idea: If you have an MS-DOS/IBM-PC emulator for your Atari ST,then you could use simple MS-DOS utilities you find at oak. I'm still waiting. Maybe I >should contact Ensoniq myself direct by mail again. I think it has been standard procedure with these kind of arrangements - ( like Key holding a UK monopoly on importing goods from Ensoniq ) that all contact to the customer should go through the agent. ( Key ) Thus Ensoniq should refer you back to Key as they did. The only reason for contacting Ensoniq should be when the situation is completely locked. You may then not get your document, but you could get a new agent. But you have to give your agent some time and you have to remind them about your request and remind them about notifying you. I had an experience with the Sysex command specification to the EPS many years ago. I had to go through the agent in Netherland ( They are not an agent for Norway anymore, luckily ). I wrote 14 letters asking for the document over a period more than a year. No luck. During a visit in USA I called Ensoniq Customer Service and got the document sent to my hotel the next day. It is my impression that getting these command specifications works OK in the USA, but there are other places ( Canada, Italy, UK, ... ) where this is very difficult. It may be an improper suggestion; someone with a US adress could perhaps help you. You could try getting the best offer from the US civiians on the list; Who would ship you the Ensoniq External Command Specifications for the least? Some college student could start a big industry selling Midi specifications for the Ensoniq synths for $100 a piece! They can not copy it without permission of coarse, but they can sell their free copies for whatever they like? Or if you were planning on buying for example sounds for your EPS/ASR/TS and the sound producing company did not have an agreement with a local agent, you could try to ask if they would function as your US adress for the external command specification and if you paid a little extra they would ship it to you with your other goods. It is totally internal, so the expansion port cover can be reinstalled after installation. The SCSI I/F is a daughter board that piggy-backs onto a 10-pin header on the 4X. There are two ribbon cables. One goes to a header on the main board and the other goes to the SCSI connector on the back. Things are looking good for having the SCSI I/F for the EPS and EPS16+ available after the first of the year. The boards are designed and we are in the process of having the boards made and stuffed. Let's completely eliminate the possibility that your drive or it's grounding has anything to do with the problems by a) unplugging the SCSI cable b) unplug the AC cord of the hard disk. If it went away you are lucky. If you still have noise, then your SCSI interface is not properly installed or it is broken. You said you had installed it twice. I suggest first take the SCSI card out again. Look carefully at the legs of the ad-on board if one could have been bent, Straighten it if so. At the same time inspect the board for visual damage like exess solder, cracks in the copper lines and the likes. It never hurts.( My SCSI interface had visible faults causing intermittant failiure which were easy to fix with a knife ) If this fais you better get professional help either from a shrink or an electronic engineer. It will convert .wav files to the following formats: Any Giebler Disk Image (.eda, .ede) Any Giebler File Image (.efe, .efa) GKH format (.gkh, .ins) It also can do what AWAVE, SoundVert, or anything else can't (for the PC) - it can place a .wav file within an existing File Image or Disk Image - anywhere in that instrument! Awave and Soundvert can only do 1 Wavesample per layer, and it has to be the only Wavesample in that layer. You can also edit any parameter you want on that instrument before committing to disk. And you can write to the floppy or SCSI device from the program itself. OK, we're biased - we wrote the program - but check the specs out and decide for yourself. EPS/ASR Tools for Windows is $59.95 - but if you are looking for a lower cost version, get TS/MR Tools for Windows - it has the same capabilities, only the MIDI editing capabilities are not there. That is $39.95. If you are concerned about the crashes - I hope to get the 3.2 out of beta-form by the end of the week. But the Disk Utilities section works fine right now. To coin a phrase: Alchemy rules. I quit owning Macs quite some time ago (went the Windoze-way --- no flames, please). Nevertheless, there was one program which I always admired for it's unparalleled features (unparalleled at least on a PC): Alchemy. I used Vers. 2.xx (can't remember at the moment), which allowed direct interaction between the Mac and my 16+: A wavesample was transferred via SCSI to the sample in the same moment when an edit occured! In this way, I could always here my sounds with all my parameter-programmings (try this with your avarage sound-card :-P) I can't remember any hassels, using a small Classic with about 4 MB RAM. Worked like a charm. As a matter of fact, I bought a used LC for little money only a week ago, with just one goal in mind: running Alchemy. I will tell you my renewed experiences as soon as I found the time to blow the dust off my old disk-box to grab the diskette. One time on my PC, apparently due to wrong termination (... the machine gave the impression of saving everything as usual, but found only data-trash the next time. No chance for recovery.). A second time there were problems with an earlier version of Giebler's EDM, when the program was buggy: The file-allocation-table was destroyed in one case. Gary Giebler himself recovered this disk (with the exception of one Subdirectory) - for free, BTW (thanks again, Gary); the bug got fixed in the meantime, so don't worry. Otherwise, the ZIP seems to be a robust, reliable data-storage-device. I all depends what you call crazy. All I ever use is samples from "around the house". One of my last pieces is made up of samples from 64 antique toasters. Now I'm working on a piece made up of samples that varry from bicycle stands to cans being draged on the ground, bottles rubbed on a tiled floor, heavy chariots being smashed on elevator walls, close micing of two inch magnetic tape being streched.etc, etc, etc.... There's nothing crazy about that. these are all rough un edited sound sources to be put to music. No matter where your sound comes from, you can make music out of it. Hello Jurki To answer your question regarding the new Waveboy FX disk its really different. There is basically 3 types of Fx available on one disk; GRAIN-STORM PITCH-WARP LO-FIDELITY To basically quote the small manual it goes like this: The GRAIN-STORM effect uses a technique called granular synthesis. In graphic terms, this effect chops the incoming sound into short grains, and then sprays them across the spectrum. Like an air-brush, the spray has control for how wide an area it covers. Each grain gets a different, randomly selected length and frequency. Since there are thousands of grains per second, one pitch turns into a cloud of different pitches, but no pitch is dominant because they are all changing so rapidly. WHAT KIND OF SOUNDS DOES IT MAKE? The grains material is the incoming audio. Each grain has a different pitch, however, so the combination they can destroy any sence of pitch in the original sound. If you put a pure sine wave intro the GRAIN-STORM, the output is a random collection of short beeps at many different pitches. At some setting it sounds like a R2D2. With richer material, the individual pitches are hard to hear. It becomes a dense block of sound,. whose dynamics and shape follow the incoming sound. At extreme settings, and with feedback, it sounds less and less like the original and more like a rainstorm. When set for very small pitch deviation, it produces a chorus-like spatial enhncement, the grains are spread out across the stereo field. PITCH-WARP This effect is a transposes pitch, but in an unusual way. It uses a technique called frequency shifting. and finally LO-FIDELITY LO-FIDELITY simulates various systems that distort sound. It is a serial chain of effects: high-pass filtering; pre-emphasis filter, clipping, dc drift, quantization, and then further EQ and band-limiting. WHEW Well I hope this helps. I'll let you know how well it works later. Since I literally just received it last week. I plan on using it on some sampled loops that I've been creating with a couple of old synths I've been using (JUP-4 & MONO-POLY) and I'll let you know. [Edit][Inst][Edit]<_INSTNAME LYR=A WS=ALL> [Amp] To have it respond to incoming Pan values like 0 = all left, 64 = center , 127 = right, I _hope I've got it right when I say ... You have to set both the pan position and the modulation amount. I think the amount above should be 100, try that. and I think you set the [Amp] Then you should set the external control number equal to the pan control by [Edit][System] >2) Is it possible to control/play instruments on the ASR via MIDI > channels 9-16 from an external sequencer? Hi, I'm new to the list, my name is David, I live in Sydney Australia, re-loacted from Adelaide 2 years ago, and I have had an EPS classic since they were first released, and I love it, know it inside out, I have been producing techno/jungle/rave music for many years and playing as DAMC at raves and clubs all around Australia with my trusty old EPS, and I also am the keyboardist/song writer/programmer with a cross over (techno/rock-funk/trip-hip hop) band called BLISS, and have also toured around Australia with them, so over the years my poor old EPS has been given a fair amount of abuse, hence having the disc drive replaced twice, the mod and pitch wheels replaced, and the screen/user input circuit board replaced to keep me going...anyway it's still going strong, and I still love my EPS :) I also sequence all my songs with the internal sequencer, and find it a lot faster to get results than using computer seq. :) Anyway just a quick question that has been on my mind for years.. Lets say I sample a single note of an analog synth, with a long duration, and over that duration the filter goes from bright to dull, ok fine, Now I can play back that sample and move the start point of the sample by modulating it with the mod wheel, so in affect create and sequence the filter changing of a sampled sound, but something I have been trying to get to work for a long time, is to modulate the start point of the sample with the LFO, you are able to set it up, and assign it, but it does not work..why? this is my question... thanks DAMC ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ DAMC on the www: http://www.ozemail.com.au/~damc BLISS on the www: http://www.magna.com.au/~kymbo/friends/bliss/b_bliss.html ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ============================================================================= This mailing list is processed through Majordomo at Oakland University. You probably haven't set the DEPTH on the LFO to a higher value than 0. Turn it to 99, and set the MOD AMT/RANGE on the Wave page to the desired amount. Remember to adjust the LFO AMT in the PITCH page so you don't get Vibrato all over the place. Or at least turn it down. I was in a band where they kept getting us confused with your band. You _did_ consider that your LFO will always start at the same point, as long as you didn't turn of the parameter RESET off? If RESET=ON, your LFO will always begin a new cycle when a key is pressed -> hence no effect on SAMPLE START, even if you change the MOD AMOUNT value to maximum. Otherwise, the LFO will modulate continuously (sp?) and change the start point of your sample (--- of course you are aware of the fact that you will encounter some heavy clicks and pops, when SAMPLE START hits larger wave-amplitudes, esp. on low-frequency-material, so be careful ;-) Hope this was the answer! Goldwave, a Windows sample editor, will let you create your own function to manipulate the wave, it is pretty crazy what you can do if you know what you are doing. It has its share of fx's, of course. But if you really want to manipulate the fx's, get Cool Edit. Great quality plus a lot more control and options that a mortal would need. Virtual Waves, a french program from Fretless International will let you generate waves from almost every known synthesis technique (oscillators, additive, noise, etc.) plus it will process your waves through its share of effects (delays, filters, spectral modulation, etc). It is sort of an object based soft synth, very good stuff. I must have every known soft synth out there; I love the fact that I have never touched an analog synth in my whole life, yet I have digitally reproduced every sound they make, and then some. Viva la digital Eddie Vedder!!! If you want more info, just say so.
