I have GM sequencing software on my PC. I have a Roland digital piano, that pretty much only has piano sounds. And of course I have the good old EPS 16+R. When I crank up the sequencing software, it sends GM signals out, but none of the downline gear has compatible sounds. Is what I need called a SOUND MODULE? I'd like something that takes GM MIDI signals in, and outputs high-quality orchestral and band-instruments sounds to the mixer audio path. What options do I have- are there a lot of compamies that make this sort of box? Are they pricey? Not anymore! The new Jazz Through Midi Program makes learning to play Jazz easy and Fun! This exciting program comes = with a Midifile disk full of preprogrammed jazz patterns, = sequences, and solos for = you to play back, practice with, solo over, or just to have fun jamming with. It's like having your own Jazz band to play with you anytime you want. = By using this new innovative program you can learn to play jazz working at your own pace and tempo. =0D THE ADVANTAGES OF LEARNING JAZZ USING A MIDI SET UP! The advantages of presenting = this type of information in a MIDI format instead of audio or video tape, or in a classroom or live performance = situation are many. The performances are repeatable at varying tempos and keys. You can loop performances so = they repeat as many times as you wish. You can mute any of = the parts and play that part yourself. This makes Jazz Through Midi suitable for keyboardists, guitarists, = bassists, horn players, and other soloists, as well as percussionists. = You can even have different instruments playing the various parts or link different sections to make longer unique phrases. =0D BEGINNING INTERMEDIATE and ADVANCED LEVELS Jazz Through Midi includes = beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels of skill all combined into one great program. The beginning levels feature exercises = that covers Ear Training drills, scales, pentatonic scales, major, minor , and dominant 7th chords, cycle of fifths, comping, voicings, right and left hand scale fingering, how to play the blues, boogie woogie, and more! The intermediate levels = feature a collection of original jazz compositions performed = in various jazz styles. The advanced levels feature a wide variety of popular Jazz standards with note for note solos as played by some of the great giants in jazz. Here is a small sample = of some of the standards included in Jazz Through Midi All The Things You Are, Giant Steps, Take 5, All Blues, Night In Tunisia My Funny Valentine, One Note Samba, Satin Doll, Killer Joe, I'll Remember April, Autumn Leaves, Spain, Bye Bye Blackbird Take The A Train, Maiden Voyage, Green Dolphin St, Morning Dance, Just In Time, My Favorite Things, = Impressions, and more! There are over 130 sequences provided for all three levels. =0D SOUNDS FOR REAL! Jazz Through Midi creates the spontaneity of a live performance. It was created by Jazz Musicians for musicians. This program features no type of auto accompaniment features like Band In A Box and other accompaniment programs. = Every sequence was played in real = time by top jazz musicians including performances by great = jazz pianist Matt Michaels. Everything sounds incredibly live and natural. Real = Jazz chord voicings are used. The bass lines are intelligently = played using smooth transitions from chord to chord. = Each sequence uses drums, piano, bass, and either horns or vibes = for the melodies and solos. =0D WIDE VARIETY OF STYLES! Jazz Through Midi features a variety of popular jazz styles: Swing, Blues, New Orleans, Modal, Fusion, Latin/Jazz, Jazz/Waltz, Stride, Jazz/Ballad, Afro Cuban. = =0D EASY AND FUN TO USE! Jazz Through Midi uses a = simple set up. Each sequence is set up to correspond to the General Midi Standard. This assures that you can start playing = Jazz Through Midi right away without having to waste a lot of time setting up your midi gear. Lead sheets are also provided for each sequence. All of the chords, solos, and = exercises are written out so you can see as well as hear what is = taking place for each sequence. Simply select the sequence you want and you're on your way to playing with a super Jazz quartet that will take you through the styles of Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Oscar Peterson, Tito Puente, and more! =0D EDITING! With Jazz Through Midi you can = easily edit and alter the key, tempo, and other aspects of = any sequence to fit your style, technique, vocal range, etc. = You can also change the feel of the accompaniments and solos by changing the tempo, = shifting each instrument to play in front or behind the beat, or by experimenting with the quantizing features of your sequencer. =0D JAZZ THROUGH MIDI COVERS IT ALL Beginning and intermediate = students can improvisers can use Jazz Through Midi to practice and learn scales, riffs, = comping techniques, bass lines, = and theory. Advanced improvisors can learn note for = note solos from the top Jazz Masters. Live performers = can use the accompaniments and solos on their live gigs. Teachers can = use Jazz Through Midi for a Jazz curriculum and also set up lessons and assignments customized to their students needs. = Jazz composers can use the accompaniments for creating = their own original songs. Of course, I got lucky, I just swapped the 4x3's with the 4x9's in my Mac LC. :) So, when I've been looking for memory, I make sure it will work with the Mac LC (that's what the computer people understand) and if it's a 4x9, it should work. - -james http://www.interpath.net/~npav/ ============================================================================= This mailing list is processed through Majordomo at Oakland University. There is no need for me to out these EPS grainstorm sounds on a server though, anyone can make them: Plug a cable into your favorite amp. Turn it up *real* loud. Cut off the connector on the other end of the cable & strip off the insulation. Put on the appropriate rubber boots, gloves, goggles & an ominous drone. Insert the leads into your nearest electrical socket. Don't just jab them in though, *tease* the socket - play it musically - use plenty of space and dynamics. Here's a review I wrote on the Severed Heads list some time ago: Yeah... I finally got the fabulous effect disk. Here's my 2 cents: Grainstorm: This is more "rainstorm" than granular synthesis. I guess the processing power of the effects processor doesn't allow more than this. You can make absolutely anything sound like a rainstorm. It's best used for weird random pitch/delay effects. Beware that high settings of the "system feedback" can blow your speakers to oblivion if you're not careful. Pitch Warp: This can make anything sound like a bell. Actually this is a sort of digital ring modulator. Nice to have, but sad that one of the frequencies always is an internal sine wave. I like to be able to feed any two waves to a ring modulator. On the other hand, I don't know any other effect where you can use a ring modulator as a "mixer" (the meaning of "mixer" here is from radio technology, not adding sounds together.) Great fun. Sound Deterioration: I'd guess Tom E will love thisone... This is the greatest distortion effect I've ever heard since owning a mirage.. ;-) Other digital distortion effects simulates overdriven guitarr amps and guitarr stomp boxes. This is distortion from the digital world. You can actually lower the sample resolution down to one bit! You can add DC to the signal for interesting clipping! A lot of bandpass filtering makes it even more fun. I really love it. /AW - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Anders Wikholm (anders.wikholm@atcit.mil.se) aka MOULIN NOIR (http://www.geocities.com/Paris/2216/) - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ============================================================================= This mailing list is processed through Majordomo at Oakland University. You must be using a SCSI adapter/interface that is not compatible with how Gary reads the SCSI bus. I believe that the SESSION 8 thing does not comply with that. And I believe Gary only uses the ASPI standard, but I could be wrong. Our Tools programs only use the ASPI standard; actually, that's about the only way you can do things. Usually Adaptecs are the ASPI ones. Imagine: You have a synth hooked up as a midi instrument (midi OUT of ASR IN to synth) such as Poly 6. You choose program #21 on the synth and record a sequence. Fine. then, when you press start again to hear it, it magically changes to program # 33 or any other #, every time you press start/play. The only way I have found on both the EPS 16+ and the ASR so far to fix this is to do Edit/Track/ Event Edit/ Program Change. Then go through and delete all programs changes (during which time I scroll, the synth makes weird midi noises, and often the ASR crashes), then put #21 in the program column, hold down the instrument LED while I press 2 and 1 and click on No, which then gives me the Old / New preview. This generally works, but crashes sporadically, and is the only way I have figured out to make it so that every time I press start/play the right program sounds on the external synth. AND if I make any changes to the sequence for that track, I have to do the whole thing over again. Hints?? Tips?/ There must be an easier way. I know that you can hold down the instrument LED while in record mode to do program changes, too, but it prettty much has to be on beat 1, doesn't it? which makes it tough. The ASR's interface turns these from a minor irritant to at least a headache and a half. You can consistently get the correct patch, however by: Before you record, go to EDIT/INSTRUMENT. Scroll to MIDI CHANNEL and set that accordingly. One page to the right is MIDI PROG. Set that. Then, when you select the instrument or play your sequence, the right patch should come up. To doctor up sequences previously recorded, select the instrument/track containing the track, select COMMAND/TRACK, scroll to FILTER EVENT [enter] It will prompt you for which type of event, select MIDI PATCH CHANGE and then hit enter. To make the correct sound come up, go to EDIT-SEQ/SONG, change REC MODE to ADD, go to the EDIT INSTRUMENT and scroll to MIDI PROG. Set this to one number below the one you want, hit REC/PLAY and while the countoff is rolling, increment the value by one. >Poof< Your corrected program number is one of the first couple events on the track. This can also be done with other controllers (ASR patch-select, pitch- and mod- wheel settings, etc.) by substituting the correct controllers in the FILTER EVENT and sending the new information during the countoff. Happy sequencing. -Jj / tree@acm.cs.umn.edu "dot seeg?! The drivers for your SCSI card may not support the ASPI standard - check with the user manual for the SCSI card or the manufacturer to see if new drivers are available (for Windows95) which support the standard. Most manufacturers support ASPI (especially for Windows95), so you shouldn't need to replace your SCSI card. Give us a call if you need further help. Hmm. But when I used a 3M disc, it > worked fine. If, by chance, the Memorex or JVC disks were preformatted for the IBM-PC, and the 3M disks were not, (or even if they were), the previous IBM format on the disks may be interfering with the Ensoniq format. Since the heads on your floppy disk drive can't line up exactly with the preformatted data, there can be a small band of the IBM format left on the disk. This confuses the floppy disk controller if it picks it up when trying to read the disk. Also, I've heard that some manufacturers write the preformat data slightly wider than a normal track to compensate for disk drive tolerances. Occasionally, when I use a preformatted disk and get the error you describe, I format the disk again. A second pass over the disk is never in the exact same place as the previous pass, so more of the IBM format is erased. However, here's my advice after years of recovering disks for Ensoniq users: 1. Never use pre-formatted diskettes. 2. Never use HD disks in the SQ-80, VFX-SD, SD-1, EPS or EPS-16. 3. Never use cheap no-name diskettes. 4. Always back up your files on two other diskettes at different times. (This avoids corrupting both backups when you run into problems). 5. Don't attempt to write any files to a diskette which is giving you trouble. (You may corrupt the data further making recovery impossible). Even some of the DOS-based EPS and Windows utilities have problems with it. I wonder if taking a bulk tape- eraser to the disk beforehand would help. Songwriting Contracts 2. Mechanical Rights 3. Songwriting Organizations 4. The Jingle Market 5. The Music News Link =0D SONGWRITING CONTRACTS There is nothing more confusing in the music business than contracts. All music publishers and record companies are in the business for one reason: To make money! Companies are more interested these days in minimizing their expenses while maximizing their profits. That is why it is so important that songwriters be educated about the business side of music as well as the craft of writing songs. =0D Once you have located a publisher or publishers you like and who are interested in your work, its time to consider the publishing contract-which is an agreement in which the songwriter grants certain rights to the publisher for one or more songs. The contract specifies any advances offered to the writer, the rights that will be transferred to the publishers, the royalties a songwriter is to receive and the length of the time the contract is valid. Usually when a contract is signed a publisher will go for a 50-50 split with the songwriter. This is a usual industry standard. The main reason the publisher takes 50 % is because he has to cover major expenses in running his business and for the work he has to do to try and get your song recorded. We highly recommend that if you do sign with any publisher or record company that you consult an Entertainment lawyer to look over your contract before you sign it. There is really no standard contract in the music business. Most contracts will differ between publishers. If you have further questions about contracts contact The Songwriter's Guild Of America they offer a contract review service and can be a big help in helping you to understand what a fair contract is and learning more about the music business. =0D SINGLE SONG CONTRACTS! Probably the most common type of contract you will encounter at first will be the single song contract. A music publisher offers you this type of contract when he wants to sign one or more of your songs, but he dosen't want to hire you as a staff writer. This type of agreement rarely includes more than two or three songs. You assign your rights to a particular song to the publisher for an agreed-upon number of years. =0D The Songwriter's Guide Of America (SGA) has drawn up A Popular Songwriter's Contrct that it believes to be the best minimum songwriter contract available. If you want to see a sample of the contract The Guild will send you a copy at no charge if you send a self-addressed stamped envelope with your request. Their address is: =0D The Songwriters Guild Of America Suite 317 6430 Sunset Blvd Hollywood, CA 90028 (213) 462-1108 =0D Any publishing contract you sign should have the following terms. =0D 1. WRITERS CREDIT. The publisher should make sure that you receive proper credit on all uses of the composition. =0D 2. WORK FOR HIRE. When you receive a contract covering just one composition you should make sure that the phrases "employment for hire" and "exclusive writer aggreement" are not included. Also, there should be no options for future songs. =0D 3. ARBITRATION. In order to avoid large legal fees in case of a dispute with your publisher, the contract should include an arbitration clause. =0D 4. REVERSION CLAUSE. The contract should also include a provision that the publisher does not secure a release of a commercial sound recording within a specified time (one year two years, etc.) The contract can be terminated by you. =0D 5. PERFORMING RIGHTS AFFILIATION. If you previously signed publishing contracts, you should be affiliated with either ASCAP, BMI or SESAC. All performance royalties must be recieved directly by you from your performing rights organization and this should be written into your song contract. =0D 6. ROYALTY PROVISIONS. Basically, you should receive fifty percent of all publisher's income on all licenses issued. If the publisher prints and sells his own sheet music and folios, your royalty should be ten percent of the wholesale selling price. The royalty should not be stated in the contract as a flat rate. =0D 7. NEGOTIABLE DEDUCTIONS. demos and all other expenses of publications should be paid 100% by the publisher. The only allowable fee is for the Harry Fox Agency collection fee, whereby the writer pays one half of the amount charged to the publisher. Today's rate charged by the Harry Fox Agency is 4.5%. =0D 8. ROYALTY STATEMENT AND AUDIT PROVISION. Once the song is recorded and printed, you are entitled to receive royalty statements at least once every six months. In addition, an audit provision with no time restriction should be included in every contract. =0D 9. CHANGES IN THE COMPOSITION. If the contract includes a provision that the publisher can change the title, lyrics or music, this should be amended so that only with your previous consent can such changes be made. =0D 10. FUTURE USES. Any use not specifically covered by the contract should be retained by the writer to be negotiated as it comes up. =0D INVESTIGATE THE PUBLISHER BEFORE SIGNING. Before you sign a contract with any publisher, you should try to learn as much about him as possible. Some questions the writer should seek answers to are: Does the publisher actively go out and obtain recordings? Has he published any hits? What kind of catalog does he have? What kind of reputation does he have? Is he involved in any lawsuits? Whom else has he published? Signing with a publisher who is unable or unwilling to exploit your song is worse than not signing at all. =0D MECHANICAL RIGHTS. A Mechanical Right is the right of a copyright owner to profit from the mechanical reproduction of his songs. Mechanical reproduction of a song includes use of the copyright in records, tapes, CD, electrical transcriptions and audio tapes for broadcast and background music purposes. The money collected from use of the copyright with regard to these sources is called mechanical royalties. Similar to the agencies which collect performance royalties are those reffered to as mechanical rights organizations. =0D Mechanical rights organizations license record and tape companies on behalf of their affiliated copyright owners to use their copyrights. The mechanical rights organizations collect all royalties earned by their affiliates and after deducting their service charge pay the balance of such earnings to these publishers. The publishers in turn pay the songwriter his share of this income. Mechanical rights organizations also regularly audit record companies books to make sure publishers are paid fairly. =0D Mechanical rights organization also collect synchronization fees if requested by their publisher members. The synchronization fee is used for use of the song (copyright) in time-relation to the motion picture or video tape. =0D Mechanical Rights Organizations are actively involved, along with record companies and music publishers, in finding and prosecuting individuals who engage in the illegal duplication of records and tapes. =0D The oldest and largest of all the mechanical rights organizations in the United States is The Harry Fox Agency 110 East 59th St New York, NY 10022 This agency charges a small percentage of the mechanical royalties music publishers earn for their collection services. The Harry Fox Agency also represent publishers for the use of their compositions in motion pictures synchronization, television, films, and video tapes. They also make sure their publisher affiliates are paid fairly by regularly conducting audits of all record manufactures they collect royalties from. For more information on the services provided by the Harry Fox Agency write them a letter. =0D SONGWRITING ORGANIZATIONS! Here is a list of different organizations for songwriters. Joining or taking part in these type of organizations are great for learning more about songwriting, the business of music, and for teaming up with different writers. =0D NETWORK OF LYRICISTS & SONGWRITERS, INC. A market overlooked by a lot of writer's is the jingle market. The basic skills needed to successfully market your ad jingles are a combination of music writing skillls and a understanding of the medium you will be dealing with. First of all ads cost a lot of money for the client. Because airtime is critical, an ad must work well in order for the client to be satisfied. Usually an ad must generate sales. =0D A client may want to gain name recognition for a service or a person or a product or service from everyone else's similar product or service. Therefore their ad will link that product or service with a desirable image or provide information for prospective customers. It is important that you understand which strategy your client has in mind. Your music must then reflect that strategy both in content and in style. You probably wouldn't use a heavy metal track for a baby food commercial. =0D Second you will need to start thinking = of complete musical songs as either 30 or 60 seconds long. This is the typical length of a commercial and the soundtrack must take that form. = Believe it or not many radio ads are even shorter. The challenge = is to fully develop a song in 30 seconds. It must have a beginning, middle, and finale. =0D I have found it very helpful to practice this short format by taking my own songs and boiling them down to their most basic ingredients. I take out every measure and note which does not add something to the central idea. This has not only helped me learn to learn the jingle format but it also has improved my standard songwriting technique. I strongly urge you to try this out on your own material. =0D Okay so we have honed our writing skills and can produce well crafted songs in the 30 to 60 second format. Now Lets look more closely at the people you are about to become involved with in this business. Like any business there is a technology and a system unique unto the advertising jingle market. Not every agency does business in the same way but in general they all follow a basic pattern. =0D An ad agency is divided into three basic organizations. If the agency is very small they may not actually have people separated by department but must still do the work involved. The organizations are: Sales: People who go out and get clients for the agency: Business Operations: The people who buy air time from TV and Radio, do the day to day bookeping, invoicing, and payroll, etc. and the Creative Department: People who write the copy, draw the pictures, pick or write the music, decide where, when and to whom the ad should be played or shown. =0D When you do business with an ad agency as a songwriter you will deal with both the creative and business organizations. Because of the nature of advertising generally the creative department runs the business. These are the people you want to know and want to deal with. The business department may send you your check but the creative department will be the one to pick your music and make the decision to either use you or not. You must therefore direct all your sales effort to the creative department people creating their own jingles. We have also included in this issue some hot leads of Ad agencies who are looking for jingles and soundtracks. These are the items that tend to eventually create heating problems: RAM, the more you have the more heat you get SCSI makes your machine generate about twice as much heat as usual The ASR-10's(EPS samplers as well) heat sink is the cassing itself, so if you have a rackmount unit, (like I do) your breakfast is served in no time. I have friends who would keep their ASR on for days(keyboard) and have no problem, but when they got the SCSI port in, the heat generated was incredible. Problems occur once in a while, but the symptoms are so various that it is very difficult to diagnose. Some times after many hours of work one track whould refuse to respond, even if I re-loaded another sound on it, I then had to shut down and reload my whole bank once again. I brough my unit to the licenced service technicians in my aria, only to find out I knew more about the problem than they did, so I understand your questionning. My solution: Take breaks once in a while. It`s difficult if you have a 16Mg bank loaded,(it take over 15 to 20 minutes to load whith floppy disks) but since I got my Syquest EZ135, I can shutdown and reload anytime, it just takes seconds to start working again. Save as often as you can the sounds you edit. Thats pretty much all I can say. ============================================================================= This mailing list is processed through Majordomo at Oakland University. I simply bought a small (approx 4cm) 9 volt fan (as used on many CPUS) and use bluetack to it direct the air flow into the heat sink at the back of the keyboard. Where the heat sink used to get too hot to touch, it now remains at room temperature. All my SCSI problems also disappeared. I'd recommend most people do something about the heat as the heat changes from power cycling is known to reduce electrical components life. So other than reducing the risk of frying components, you are also reducing the temperature differential and will probably increase the life expectancy of your keyboard. Paul P.S. I use an external transformer for the fan. P.P.S. Given that I used metric for this and some of you won't have a clue what I'm talking about, 30 deg C is 86 def F, 35 C is 95 F and "approx 4 cm" can be read as "approx 1.5 in" ============================================================================= This mailing list is processed through Majordomo at Oakland University. About 2 weeks ago I bought my first sampler - ASR-10, and subscribed to this list. I'm a bit worried about the heat it makes, but from the archived digests I learnt that it's perfectly normal (especially that mine has SCSI, 16M RAM and output expander). Here are my first questions: - - the Rez-Filter from Waveboy - can it be applied to each note separately (controlled by the envelope, like the built-in filters), or is it just applied to anything routed to BUS1? I assume the latter, but how useful is it in that case? (though I saw so many good responses on this disk, that I'll probably buy one anyway) - - Has anybody used the Parallel effects disk, and what are your impressions? - - The Rubber Chicken also sells "Demolition disk", but the description is not very informative: "wacky effects... granular synthesis and other fun noise methods.." Can someone tell more about this beast? AFAIK, granular synthesis has never been implemented in any synthesizer - so this might be a breakthrough (or a sales gimmick...) - - I read the thread on "Tricks" with great interest. Does anybody know how to simulate vinyl scratching on this sampler? Sorry to keep "plugging" away, but EPS/ASR Tools for Windows, or in a more inexpensive vein, TS/MR Tools for WIndows, can do just that. Features include: 1) Convert a .wav file to ANY Ensoniq format (.gkh, .ins, .ede, .eda, .efe, .efa - I think that's about it) 2) Edit parameters directly to disk 3) Read/Write/Format Ensoniq-formatted Floppy/SCSI devices 4) Make your own Bank files, Disk Images with Files, and more Disk management things. 4) EPS/ASR Tools makes looping easier for you - visual see what is going on inside your EPS/ASR instead of guessing through the 22-character display. 5) Works on Win 3.x and Win95 EPS/ASR Tools 3.2 for Win is $59.95, and TS/MR Tools 2.1 for Win is $39.95. You, my friend, have a sampler, that means that you have arcording machine, like any tape player, but you are able to manipulate the sounds you record in it. So, if you need vinyl scratch, here are a few solutions: 1) Use a turntable, plug the output of your sound system into the line in of your asr, the record whatever you want. - -Play a record at it`s beginning or at the very end and get vinyl "popcorn". - -Put it into a loop and mix it with a sequence to get a vinyl recording effect. - -Put all your tracks through a band pass filter and fake a vintage recording - -Manipulate the record whith your hands and get all the "rap scratch effects" you desire - -Use the pitch shift modulator accellerate and slow down. 2) Find pre-made soundFX CD`s, but they would contain exactly what I just described to you, only in a less flexible form. Good decision :-) - you should also check out Transoniq Hacker's OnLine-Interface for moderated discussions and first-hand info from Ensoniq themselves. What you _get_ is the late repair of the worst of Ensoniq's omissions: Squeaking, sweeping, wobbling resonance 8-)! The Rez-Filter is only available via BUS1, which is not as bad as it seems to be: you can still use the 3 other stereo-busses for each sample individually. You have an own, pretty fast envelope for the rez-filter and most of the other modulation-sources for changing cutoff-frequency. (... when I think about it ... you can't modulate the Q-factor, i.e. resonance-amount, which is a pity.) In addition, there is dedicated sample-and-hold modulation. The real drawback is that you can't assign individual parameter-settings for a single sample (not even a single Instrument), but OTH, I prefer this solution instead of having no resonating filters at all ;-) Go for it - it's worth every Cent. (...at least I use it all the time.) >- - Has anybody used the Parallel effects disk, and what are your impressions? They are - well: usefull. Having said that I should add: good for home-recording and layouts, when you lack external FX-boxes. Personally I don't find them too convincing, at least on the EPS 16+. If you play live, they may help a lot, of course (... that's where I use them). >- - The Rubber Chicken also sells "Demolition disk", but the description is not >very informative: "wacky effects... granular synthesis and other fun noise >methods.." The "Soniq Demolition"-disk is another WAVeBOY-product; Rubber Chicken Software is one of their distributors. - I won't repeat the euphory that I shared with list only a few weeks ago ;-), but let me tell you: I _love_ them. "Granular Synthesis" is maybe technically correct, although not what you would expect when you read essays from IRCAM or other scientific institutes on this topic. The results are quite unpredictable, nevertheless _very_ impressing and great fun, to say the least. One thing, though: On some machines (mine, for example :-( ...) the "Granular" algorithm leads to earcrunching, erratic noise. No way to stop it. WAVeBOY promised to fix this, but this will take some time. The two other settings work flawless and produce some earthshaking distortion / pitchifting-effects with great realtime-control. I think I can say there are a few of us out here doing this stuff. I addition to Alchemy I also use EPSm , which to me is the most important program of the lot because it allows import and export of Sound Designer ll files. Mose computer editing I do these days is in programs like Logic Audio . Also , Sound hack and Sound Effects , two shareware programs you will find on the net, are great. They offer some very original ways to mangle your 0's & 1's. They generally read the aforementioned SDll files. In this scenario EPSm acts as the bridge between ASR and computer. The SCSI chain issue is , from most of the people I have spoken to , a little unstable at times. I have had reliable hookup for weeks followed by intermittant problems. The biggest factor I think is the cables you use. Sometimess a SCSI cable that has worked fine with just ASR & hard drive creates a problem when you patch into the mac SCSI chain, so much testing needs to be done but I do believe it is achievable. Also: how do >*you* backup your material? > >Any ideas anyone? > >Canine > Hello kai! I know this problem, and I think I know the solution: The ASR is able to load a bank from a SCSI device ONLY if it (the storage device) has the SAME ID NUMBER that used when you saved that bank. That is, say, if you saved your banks (& instruments) on a Syquest drive bearing id #1, then copy this cartridge on a fixed drive with id#2, in order to reload your banks from this fixed drive, you must change its id.number from #2 to #1, otherwise you'll load empty banks. (The ASR says: "Bank load completed" or something like that, although no instrument is loaded. By the way, it's the only way I know to clean up completely or quickly empty the ASR from any instrument, avoiding to select/pressing "NO" for each. Anybody knows another trick?? As for me, I use Syquset (270) only for backing up a (840Mb) fixed drive, which I restore from time to time from the Syquest cartridges. I stopped using the Syquest for everyday use because of too many fatal problems. I believe the removable cartridge systems are great for backups or transport of datas, BUT fail as soon as they are even slightly fragmented (i.e. when you save, resave & reresave the same instrument or delete some files). On the other hand, fixed drives are cheaper & much more reliable (I even found a totally silent one!) My fixed & removable drives are simply serially connected, each with a different id. number (1&2); You don't need anything else to make backups directly from the ASR. I also stopped making backups to DAT through the digital I/O: too long, tedious and hazardous. For the moment the Macintosh is on a completely separated SCSI chain (with already enough SCSI peripherals). But I'm interested in EPSm, though. Where did you get this program? Hope this helped you. In the Tools program, there is a BANK FILE WRITE procedure, where you can compose and write your own banks, and "wholesale" modify the ones on your hard disk. For example: 1) You have a 44syquest, made on a drive numbered SCSI 1 2) You change the SCSI number 3) You try to load the banks on the 44 again - they won't load That's because the banks work off a "path" situation, for example: SCSI 1/SOUNDS/MY SOUNDS/BRASS/TROMBONE So if you change the SCSI number, the bank paths are wrong, and they don't work. Tools will go and change all the Banks it finds with the parameters you give it on a floppy or hard disk - "converting it", so to say. Tools has some pretty nice backup options. Unfortuantely, it's for the PC - Tools with be for the Mac before the end of the year, but it probably will not have the SCSI/Disk functions that PC Tools has. Any ASR wizards out there? What you have to understand is that there are 2 places to set the pan/level/effects bus for each instruments. As you rightly point out the parameters under edit/amp are saved ONLY when you save the instrument...saving the BANK will not remember these. If you want to save these settings you have to save all your instruments first and _then_ save the bank. (yes it is a waste of disk space) Alturnatively there are pan/level/effects bus parameters under edit/track. If you set the parameters here , they will be saved with the bank without having to save each instrument. Uses less disk space but not as flexible as scenario "A" because you can only set the values on a "PER INSTRUMENT" basis, not per wavesample (as you can in scenario "A") For a lot of instruments this may be all you need. Please note that the edit /track parameters overide the edit amp settings . (except the volume. this is always retained on a relative basis. IE the volume differences will be retained , just the overall level of said instrument goes up or down )both the pan and the effects bus settings can be returned to their instrument settings by assigning the settings in edit/track to wavesample or ws. If you backup from the root directory and restore to >a blank reformatted disk, then the two methods: a)by log file b)by mac >folder, will yield the same iff there were no "holes" in the directories. >It is possible to select partial backups and partial restores where the >files do not end up in the same logical location as where they were >originally. That's what you could use when preparing one new disk >containing large portions of material from a few other disks. I used the "by Mac Folder" method, not knowing about the special way it treats holes in directories ("holes in directories" are empty slots where a sound has been deleted. The number where the deleted file was remains empty, thus all following files retain their numbers). So I found the error. I still have the original disk and I don't have that many banks, so I can just look up the banks and restore them manually. It seems the problem has been solved. BUT: the next question arises. For the past 2 years I have been using Syquest 44MB removables. (3 by now). This is becoming tedious since all three are filled to the rim. Thus I need to migrate to another medium, while keeping my banks intact. How do I merge three disks into one while retainig the banks? On to the next round... I've recently noticed that my ASR is sounding a bit weird; when I play a sample or samples, it sounds like the volume is wavering, something like a low-amplitude sample-and-hold signal is modulating amplitude. It's particularly noticeable in sustained musical sounds, but pretty much invisible in percussion, loops, etc. I think it sounds like it's pre-effects (e.g., the reverb seems smooth, though the sounds going into the reverb sound odd). I think this may have been around for quite awhile... I've recently set up a much quiter and higher-quality listening environment, and that might allow me to hear things better then before (and might have brought me to listen a bit more critically, as well). Could this have something to do with the memory I added? I'm currently at 10Mb, having added 2 43Mb SIMMs. I ordered whatever the manual told me to order, and installed them, but I'm honestly not sure whether they were the correct number of chips, or whatever... Before I open it up and start goofing around with it, does anyone think that memory is the likely culprit? Has anyone else ever noticed a similar problem? What material, size, weight? I've only seen one kind of SKB case, if there are more styles than I'm aware of, feel free to add to my response. They are black with silver trim. They are make of SKB plastic (thus the name) and are very tough. The size depends on what you order- keyboard case or rack. The amount "extra" is pretty minimal. It's not much larger than the items contained within. As we mentioned earlier, they weigh very little--empty :) One of the problems I've had with several of the SKB cases is with the covers. The manufacturers/resellers boast the cases are air tight/waterproof, but after several rough trips the covers won't fit the case tightly and water can leak in. After time, the latches become worn (read: worthless) and the covers tend to come loose during transport, so they fall off when you pick up the case. Not fun. Additionally, the ones I've seen have no security or key locking mechanism. But, all-in-all, they're worth what you pay as long as you don't mind putting up with some minor hassles. >>Where can I get it from (I am in Hungary), and what is the price? I have an skb keyboard case for my TS10... Fits nicely!! That is with their standard size case... I also have a skb rack case (5unit i think) that i house my asr10 and a PS systems hardrive). The thing i dont like about skb gear is it tends to be bulky.. Although it is lighter then ply,. I have also heard of the cases warping if left in the sun, although i have never experienced this.. > > Additionally, the ones I've seen have no security or key locking mechanism. As for your 2nd question, and as far as my knowledge goes: a) you can stack "only" 8 wavesamples played by a single note (8 layers per instrument, 1 wavesample per layer). So basically you can't play 31 samples on one note, one instrument. b) But in fact you can play more than 8 wavesamples on a single note by stacking instruments. If a single note plays two instruments, each playing 8 wavesamples (on 8 layers), you'll play (2x8=) 16 wavesamples, (3x8=) 24 with three instruments stacked, etc. OR if you play a two-notes chord with just two instruments, you'll exceed the max. polyphony, since you'll call (2x2x8=) 32 wavesample to play at the same time (I am not sure you'll be able to identify WHICH is the missing wavesample, though...). c) Ensoniq says "31 voices polyphony" (@31kHz only). You can replace "voices" by "wavesamples". There is a search engine that can help you find sounds, and the site looks real good - James maintains it with a strong personal interest to it. The archieve that was on OAK will shortly be all up on SC, and we've been trying to get WOZZECK's - DOugs a good guy, but the 4mm tape he's been saying he'll send us isn't showing up in the mails. (Please e-mail him at doug@sun1paztcn.wr.usgs.gov and ask him to send it to us.) Also, with SC, we are trying to make it easier for people to download and transfer things without the hassle of knowing what the foramts are, both on them EPS side, and the compression side. We even will have out own transfer-to-floppy program that will make it much easier. SC is not Ensoniq-only, but you better believe that there will be lot's of Ensoniq disks on there. We will also quality-insure things so that they will be what you expect. James is open to most ideas, and advertising too. Give him a ring at webmaster@soundcentral.com. If you have sounds to contribute - go right ahead! Mail them in. Oh, the site: http://www.soundcentral.com And all of this is free! Provided (see below question) >otherwise I would like to ask you to "give back to the net". Kai is right. Everyone has a resposibility to "give back". There is room for all things here - for people to gain all sorts of informatio and products, and for people to make a living. There's no need to overstep any of the boundaries, like unsolicited postings, or even not giving back to the source. That's a challenge to everyone - otherwise, time to "start paying". Well, you have a good point - I wasn't thinking of that when I did the sig. Such a long sig would bother me too, if I got one. So I'll modify it for posts to the list (see below). Something I don't understand about the list - I was getting responses to this post personally more than a day before I got the original post - so some people get messages a lot quicker than I (I'm in the US), or I'm getting them later. Perhaps the fact that the poster is in Sweden contributed to that. Why is that? Thanks - by the way, this list continues to be serving it's purpose 100% because of everyones VERY VERY helpful contributions. I've been on the Akai list for a while now - they get more traffic, but there's a lot of riff-raff there (more like "don't use that language" stuff). I think anyone who subscribes here will appreciate the depth of content and quick response to questions. Here's to everyone! I'm new to this list, so please forgive me if this has been beaten to death already. I'm looking into the possibility of a removable media HDD for my unit and according to Ensoniq's outdated (3/96) FAX-back sheet, there are not many choices out there for my aging box. (Ensoniq's tech support said the list was current!) Has anyone tried any of the newer EZ Drives with this unit? Will the ZIP Drive work at all? (They are pretty inexpensive at the moment). Is there a current compatibility list anywhere? Also, when using OS 1.30, after an instrument is loaded, I can not select it. If I go into edit mode, it plays fine. Is there a workaround for this problem? (I know about Ensoniq's bugs, I got a VFX too.) Anyway, thanks for any info. Any help I >can get will be greatly appreciated! Charles, Unfortunately the name of this device has confused many people new to the EPS. The OEX-8 is/was an output expander. That means it provides additional outputs for your sounds - beyond the main left and right (speaker) outputs. It is an external box with a flaky connector that has eight quarter-inch output jacks. You can see this parameter available in Edit-Amp output and at the pan parameter in the sequence tracks. Sorry, the RAM doesn't get any bigger that 4X. - ------------------------------------------------------------------ Tom Jordan Wired for Sound! - computer music for kids http://www.iac.net/~tjordan - ------------------------------------------------------------------ ============================================================================= This mailing list is processed through Majordomo at Oakland University. Tom, sorry but you're wrong. Yes, there's the 8 Output Expander but a third party vendor was making an 8x memory expander (Maartex or Maartist was the company, or something similar) but they never took off as they made the EPS very unstable... From what I heard years back, the EPS would crash constantly and the expander would force the EPS to heat up biggie time. Their 4x expander (with SCSI) built in was a little more successful. - - Christopher Drost - - nice+smooth, toronto At 11:48 AM 11/30/1996 -0500, Tom Jordan wrote: >> Say, all, whatever happened to all those folks who were coming out >>with 8x memory expansion for the good old EPS Classic..? >> >> Better yet, where can I get one? >> Is this a simple hardware hack? >> ...And if so, does anyone out there know where to find information..? >> >> I already have the 4x and SCSI installed, if that helps. Yes, the name Maartists rings a bell, and I am almost certain that there was another one. Sounds like the EPS power supply is barely adequate for my 4x expander as it is, but I would think that an expander with outboard power thru a wall-wart would be a great hardware hack... any thoughts, anybody? By the way, many thanks for all the responses..! -CMB ============================================================================= This mailing list is processed through Majordomo at Oakland University.
