Hi friends! Last night my trusty EPS-16+ (which has performed like a champ for over five years) decided that it no longer wants to sample. Here's how it doesn't work: I press "sample" and LCD indicates there IS audio at the input, I press "yes/enter" to begin sampling and"no/cancel" to stop, at this point "processing data" flashes very briefly and then "play root key" and then.....silence.....gut wrenching silence. The resulting instrument is 8 blocks in size which I'm guessing means it contains no wavedata, which I'm guessing is very bad. I'm really hoping that I can fix this with rubber bands and duct tape as I am woefully short of the green stuff that makes problems go away. Has anyone else had this problem? How much will it hurt? What should I do? Thank you for listening. I can install it myself (I have a degree in electronics and computers/networking), and as the warranty has already run out I am not concerned about voiding it. Any ideas where to turn to? The TS-10/12 can read your floppies and SCSI devices and play your samples. If I'm not mistaken, the MR-61 doesn't support loading and playing EPS/ASR samples. The TS-10/12 comes with 2MB of sample RAM (same as a fully expanded EPS-16+) that can be expanded to 8MB of sample RAM. The TS supports A) loading one bank of 10 sample-instruments with 2MB of sample RAM B) loading 2 banks of 10 sample-instruments with 8MB of sample RAM; HOWEVER, the maximum instrument size for each bank is 4MB The SCSI interface for the TS is read-only and supports macros. A sequences file (60 SONG/SEQ -- 10 banks) can save sound programs and sample banks. When the sequence file is loaded, the TS will ask if you want to auto-load the samples. Press YES and it will prompt you for floppies or automatically pull them from a SCSI drive. Note: when you save sample banks, this includes references to the sample-instruments as well as any edits you made to them. So, you can tweak sounds for a particular arrangement without altering the original instruments! Sample-edits for a particular instrument can be saved as a separate sample-edits file as well. The TS-10/12 has 4 banksets of 60 sound programs each in ROM, as well as 2 banksets of user memory. Go for it! - -- G. Me too,- have seen something like that written about the MR-61/76. Has anyone tried out ASR/EPS sample instruments for these MR keyboards? There are several MR Rack users on the list, but the Rack can't load samples. When is RCS coming with an expansion card which loads samples into sample RAM by SCSI for the MR Rack? I've some questions about the MR-61/76 anyhow.. Do these MR's also have "Edits" so that you can save the parameter tweaking separately? I would imagine that for some instruments, you actually have to tweak parameters to get it right. I don't know. I assume the ASR instrument will be translated to an MR instrument upon loading. Given the different ( but similar ) architectural details I would assume some instruments could be way off without any tweaking. I am thinking about the envelopes. I have often used cycling envelopes ( ENVELOPE MODE=REPEAT ) for many purposes like slow sweeps by transwaves or filters or of the panning position, If the envelopes have different number of segments for the ASR and the MR, cycling envelopes become difficult to translate. Also, just curious, what would happen when the ASR instrument has both soft and hard velocity envelopes? something the MR does not have. Does the MR take up two layers; one for the soft and one for the hard envelope, and with a velocity dependant crossfade? That would make the MR eat up polyphony twice as fast as the ASR, or? Of coarse it is possible the instrument definition is not translated. RCS, you must know all these things if you will make that card.?!? Yes you are right. You indicated the right reason why the ASR does not recognize the CD drive; It is caused by the bootup order. I think the ASR scans the SCSI bus only at bootup time to find which SCSI devices are connected. So when the CD ROM is not there when the ASR boots up, it will always think it is not there. >If I try to >boot the Mac first, it will crash when the ASR is "SEARCHING FOR SCSI >DEV" > What can I do about it? I think I can not help you. - other than joining in on howling for help, complaining and whining. I'll do that :-) Does anyone know what the ASR sends out at bootup which are "harmful" to many SCSI devices in Mac environments? It has been known since day one that there are problems. It is disappointing that nothing has been done to it. Mikael describes his system as Mac/CD/HD ---- ASR HD ----- ASR Have you tried connecting your ASR directly to the Mac without having the ASR Hard Disk in the chain at all? If you try it, please tell if the Mac still crashes. I don't know. I think that it is possible that one particular device will cause the Mac to crash when the ASR boots, while others may not. It could thus be your internal hard disk, your CD or your ASR HD. If it is the latter, then it may help if you chanmge to another drive, or do you think Ensoniq will rewrite their bootup procedure..? I don't know. I add 2c to any discussion of this at the end here. I get different behaviors with different SCSI devices. I'll describe only two here and hope some other will join in with their sunshine or horror stories. My 88 Syquest have to have an Ensoniq cart in it when the ASR boots when the Mac is running, otherwise the Mac will crash. It will crash with a Mac cart and crash without a cart. Every time. After boot, with an Ensoniq cart in the drive, I can change Mac and Ensoniq carts as I please. My Syquest EZ135 will stay busy forever if there is no cart in the drive when the ASR boots if the Mac is running. While I have seen no Mac crash problems. There are no problems with any other of my gear, CD150, CD300, several Quantums, tape BackUp. When we test SCSI devices, often we do it out of nessecity when we should have completed some music within a deadline. It is very easy to make wrong diagnosis since there will always be the cabling problem that can destort your hurried test results. Is there a need for an ASR-compatibility list for SCSI devices and another Mac-and-ASR-compatibility list for scsi devices? Nah I think that the problem you have is a disk that Ensoniq's SCSI implementation is not happy with, and that your SCSI controller is installed okay. Why not try buying an external SCSI hdd from somewhere on the understanding that you can return it if it's incompatible with your equipment. I have an EPS16+ and I use a Syquest EZ135 amongst other things; I have not had any problems with it, and it is very fast (in sampler terms). They are also now quite cheap (100 pounds, 135MB cartridges are around 12.5 pounds). As far as I am aware, all drives that work with the 16+ will work with the ASR10. Some shops may be a bit funny about you returning something just because it doesn't work with your equipment: Don't buy _anything_ from them because they have a bad attitude towards their customers. There are shops that will be quite happy to help you and they deserve your business. I am really not interested in buying any more of Ensoniq's little add on pieces but ran across probably the best CD-ROM I've ever seen to date. I have a Mac Quadra 840AV and I was wondering if there was anyway to use the CD-ROM on the mac along with software like Terje's EPSm to put them on a floppy. But if memory serves me correctly, I wouldn't be able to get all of the layering ,etc. if I did it that way. I would have to pull down the instrument wavesample by wavesample. Is there any other way around this.. or would any of you recommend getting the SCSI interface put on just for this one cd-rom that I absolutely love. A friend has offered to put the sounds on disk for me..but at over 300 megs...that's an aweful lot of floppies..and time. Supposing you weren't aware of the fact, I suggest that you simply retract your trading offer. Apart from the legal aspects: While software-pirating won't really hurt a company like Micro$oft, it _could_ hurt a smaller company like Ensoniq, and it _certainly_ hurts an innovative individual like Gary Giebler. (BTW: At least Mr. Giebler monitors this list from time to time, so don't be surprised if you get flamed for this ...) On the other hand: There is a shareware-version of Giebler's EDM available online, called the "Ensoniq Disk Extractor", which is exactly what you need for trading samples via the 'Net. Iomega will get back to me on the reasons, etc. So that means if you have a ZipDrive, and it is not formatting disks, consider the following: 1) If you try to format, and the ZipDrive light blinks once, and then stops, and the Ensoniq continues to flash FORMATTING..., then you probably have an "incompatible firmware" ZipDrive. 2) The best way to exchange the Zip Drive is to call 801-629-7630, and wait wait wait wait. Eventually someone will come on and take your request. Make sure you say that you have an "A/V" problem, and need the drive exchanged. Get the RMA#, and send the drive off. DO NOT USE THE FAXBACK system - it has burned us more than once (they take a month to fax an RMA number back to you). 3) Rubber Chicken Software Co. sells ZipDrives that are guaranteed to have compatible firmware. Ensoniq has plenty of LED screens. The new models are made with the LCD's. All EPS-ASR's that need LED screen replacements will get new LED's, and all bad LCD screens will get new LCD's. I've never had any problems, ever, with my SCSI setup, it's worked flawlessly for years. All of a sudden I go to save a bank, and I get the "WRITE VERIFY ERROR." I also noticed that directories I have recently created with EPSm (version 154) and sounds/banks I have moved with EPSm are not visible or acccessible from my EPS display, even though they show up in the EPSm directory window. I was hoping for a more elegant solution from the ASR, but oh well. Geibler would be nice, but I have a Mac, which brings me to my next question(s) I have a Zip on my mac and a Zip on my ASR (just came in today and formats fine - guess I lucked out.). I wanted to try out some of the SCSI features in EPSm (which all Mac users should buy!), but as soon as the Mac reads the disk, it spits it back out. if I time the SCSI check juuuuuuuust right, I can get a root level disk directory, but the disk still gets spit out and then I can't do anything else. What's the solution? Terje? Anyone? One more thing... I know that in the past there was quite a discussion about the proper sysex or other types of codes (patch changes?) to send to the ASR to automate bank loading. Does anyone have a copy of these or know where instructions reside? Are they in the FAQ and if so, where is the FAQ? (I've been gone for about 8 months now and my brain has turned to mush). Finally (and the crowd cheered...), is anyone using the Galaxy Sample Names device to track your ASR samples? If so, I'd like to talk to you about it. r. P.S. I would like to recommend that nobody do what I recently did: 1. Change sequencer programs (not to mention platforms) 2. Move from a simple 1-in 1-out MIDI interface to a Studio 4 (8/10) 3. Decide it's time to finally hook up those old synths that I didn't have room for in the rig... 4. Rearrange the studio (rewire rewire rewire rewire) 5. Buy two new synth units 6. Do all of these simultaneously and expect to get anything done in the first two months. it would be bad enough just to switch sequencers, but the whole concept of moving from a mostly mechanical switching/patching setup (with an MX-8 patchbay) to a software based multi-port system (Studio 4) PLUS Opcodes interconnectedness of all things philosophy PLUS the growing fire hazard of power cables under my desk as I try to get everything in some kind of easy reach... sigh. later. ==================================================================== Ray E. Here is the text from our SCSI Troubleshooting tips at our website: http://www.soundcentral.com/~chickeneps/rcs_tips.htm#SCSITrouble SCSI Drive Troubleshooting Tips Here's a fail-safe way to check out your SCSI device. 1) Turn EVERYTHING off. 2) Make sure your drive is plugged into the EPS/ASR, and the cable is screwed in and tight. 3) Turn on the drive. 4) If it does not have a cart in it, put it in now. 5) Wait for the disk to spin up, and click in to READY state. 6) Turn on the EPS/ASR, with an OS floppy inserted. 7) As the prompt says SEARCHING FOR SCSI DEVICE, look at the drive, and watch it to blink. This is called the NEGOTIATION PHASE. THe EPS/ASR looks for devices on the SCSI chain, and tries to get an acknowledgement from them. If it does (the blink), it adds that device to it's "list", and goes on. 8) If it did not blink, either something is wrong with your drive your drive is on SCSI #3 (that's a no-no, that's the Ensoniq's number) your cable is bad your Ensoniq's SCSI is bad something ahead of or behind that drive in the chain is suspect If you have a ZipDrive, there is no ZipDisk in the ZipDrive. your drive needs to be terminated, or there is another device ahead of it in the chain which is terminated. 9) If it did blink, wait for the system to boot up. 10) Go to COMMAND-SYSTEM/MIDI/CHANGE STORAGE DEVICE, and switch it to the desired SCSI number. 11) If successful, you should get DISK COMMAND COMPLETED. 12) If not a) INVALID LOAD DEVICE: The EPS/ASR did not add this to it's "list" during the Negotiation Phase b) DISK NOT RESPONDING: Something jammed the drive, usually in the Negotiation phase, or in your accessing. This sometimes happens when you try to access the drive when it's busy c) NOT EPS DEV or NOT ASR DEV: The command was successful, but the cart/drive is not formatted for the EPS/ASR d) It freezes: somethings really wrong. e) BAD DEVICE ID: The command was successful, but the cart/drive is not formatted for anything at all. f) DISK NOT READY: There is no cart/CD in your drive. | * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * | | Garth Hjelte | | Customer Service Representative / Owner | | Rubber Chicken Software Co. | | 714 5th Street SE | | Willmar, MN 56201 USA | | | | 1-800-8-PRO-EPS - Toll Free Order Line | | 320-235-9798 - Technical Support and | | EPS/ASR/TS question line - Fax | | chickenEPS@willmar.com - e-mail | | OUR WEB PAGE | | http://www.soundcentral.com/~chickeneps | | * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * | ============================================================================= This mailing list is processed through Majordomo at Oakland University. The problem is that any time I try to move around on the hard disk after it has performed its calibration routine, I get a DISK NOT RESPONDING and I always have to reboot before the ASR recognizes the hard disk again. Hi Sabin, the program you're looking for is scEPSi from Steve Berkely ! WHAT IT DOES (excerpt from User-Manual) : scEPSi software for the MacIntosh computer allows you to view an EPS SCSI storage device through the windows and interface guidelines Mac users are already so familiar with. You may browse through directories, and even into the layers and wavesamples of instruments. Other features include extraction of wavesamples to AIFF format on a MacIntosh storage device, searching capabilities, backing up and restoring devices, and instrument saving. scEPSi allows transfers of sample data from your EPS SCSI device to sample editing software such as Alchemy, or disk oriented sample editing programs like Sound Designer or Audiomedia. Steve Berkely has his own ftp space with the latest version of this program and others there . mine is ver 1.44 The address - ftp://ftp.crl.com/ftp/users/ro/sberkley/Utilities/ best regards Robert ******************************************* - - >Internet: Robert_Scholtes@arena.de - - sent via an evaluation copy of BulkRate (unregistered). ============================================================================= This mailing list is processed through Majordomo at Oakland University. Not necessary to get SCSI-2...in fact,SCSI is kinda "downward compatible",ie, if Jaz is SCSI-2 compatible, and u use it on a SCSI-1,then it'll step down to SCSI-1. I use my Jaz with a PowerMac 6100(which is SCSI-1) and no problems...in fact,i detach my Jaz every now and then and hook it up to my ASR-10 to back up the ASR's HD(270Meg)...of course,i use another Jaz cartridge for this backup, formatting it as an Ensoniq Jaz cartridge.. :-) So no problem with your needs there! Does the Backup and >Restore function work reliable ? Any other ideas... I'm afraid you can't do anything with your sampler, ( although it is possible that cabling problems also could give these error messages occasionally ) I would have done the following with the program EPSm.. If I wanted to fix the errors, I would first try to salvage those damaged files ( "scsi-menu/special/try to recover damaged" ) This saves those files to the computer hard disk. Sometimes it can salvage the complete instrument, sometimes only part of it, and sometimes not at all, it depends upon the complexity of the errors. Then I would back up the complete hard disk. I would then place the salvaged files manually into the backup, reformat the hard disk and restore (by Mac folder.) If I just wanted to "get rid of the files" as you say, I would have done that by the "scsi-menu/special/wipe out damaged" in the program. ===== If you want to know a little more of the why's, here it goes.. The message from your sampler say that your the File Allocation Table ( FAT ) is somehow damaged. It does not even look like a FAT to the sampler. The FAT is required in order for the sampler to know which blocks on the disk the file occupies. Here is the problem with doing anything with your sampler.. If the sampler just replicates each block, when backing up, then the backup will have the same error as the original. If the sampler was to read file by file for backup, then ...well the sampler can not do that simply because the FAT is bad. 'To get rid of the files". Note that you can not free any space of your hard disk in a reliable way by removing those files. Any attempt at that will likely result in damaging the content of your hard disk. The only thing you can do is clean the entry in the directory; that means you make room for another file in the directory but you do not release any hard disk space. You can not do that operation on the sampler, but you can with a computer program. Greetings, I know that this has been asked before but here it goes... I'm trying to connect my 16+ to my PowerMac 6100CD thru my syquest EZ135. 6100CD ->EZ135 ->EPS16+ So far I cant seem to get this configuration to work. Either the EPS doesn't recognize the 135 or the Mac freezes as soon as the EPS searches the SCSI bus. All scsi ID's are set as they should be. The manual seems to indicate that this hook up is possible. I'm wondering if anyone has been able to do this. I know that the mac & the 16+ are both terminated and that the EZ135 drive is not (I guess that's why they supply a terminator). I'm not sure how to find out if the CD is terminated though. Any advice from a Mac Guru would be helpful. In the message body put: unsubscribe eps ------------------------------ From: Original Kotto Date: Tue, 22 Oct 1996 09:39:40 -0700 (PDT) Subject: EPS: Time Compression So I was doing some time compression on my ASR over the weekend, and I had some problems: I was trying to compress a relatively short stereo sample (< 1000 blocks) about 64%. It worked (at 0% quality) one out of 8 times; it never worked at any quality higher than that. Every other time, it would cut off the sample at the very end. I tried to think of reasons why it was cutting off and removed each factor before re-attempting the compression. This included freeing up all available memory (10MB) except the sample itself; performing the compression only on one sample of the stereo pair; changing the root key (originally D5) to C4; and changing the quality level. It became insanely frustrating waiting for the damn thing to finish the compression only to find out that it didn't work, so I wound up doing the compression using SoundHack (a Mac freeware utitlity which TOTALLY rocks and if you have a Mac, you should use this), which did the compression in stereo in under ten minutes with
