Often it's not the capacitor itself that's the culprit, but something else that caused the capacitor to fry. A transistor or IC may have gone south, causing full current to go through the cap. -Mark - -- "Key chuckles. Pitch wheel. Hello to all, I picked up this error about 7 months ago and would like to see some discussion on the subject of common experiences or bug fixes. I don't know if this has been talked about or resolved. Well, without killing the reputation of the wonderful Ensoniq machines, I have now got my third replacement ASR-10. Great machine but you've got to know the quirks. (Like any synth/sampler). The pitch wheel on the ASR has (for us) been a dodgy affair. The pitch wheel would not center back to it's original position. This put all the sounds out by a constant value, so that it was not evident at first. But when we started recording the demos of our music the vocalists had a lot of trouble adjusting and we could not figure out what was wrong. So I went into the system diagnostic area (COMMAND-1-1) and viewed the values of the analogue controlers. The pitch wheel should have been sitting on the value 64 but was centered on 61 and sometimes 58. In my paniced state I sent it away to get serviced, but was told that it was a software error i.e a corrupted OS disk. (Version 1.61 at the time). A new copy from my original fixed this and we were happy. The main problem with the pitchwheel is that if it is not equal to 64 then its' position will be recoreded into the sequence. It also affects external modules and some drum machines. So it is very hard to distinguish when it is happening and when it's all cool. You then have to go back through all of the tracks in every sequence in every song and filter out the pitch-wheel information. AAARRRGGGHHHHH !!! I found that the error occurs only when I write a sound/bank/sequence/effect etc to the OS disk. (Very strange) I even get worried about saving the Global Parameters. So the OS is an exact copy of the original with no edits or extra files. If anyone could comment on this, I would just like to know if it is a common bug, and if there are any fixes. JB, I had the same problem and solved it by placing a terminated Syquest Drive between the MAC and ASR. I think what happens is that your MAC is not ready to identify the ASR an a useable SCSI device. As your MAC loads its operating system, its runs a scan of the SCSI bus, unless you have fancy inits that tell it not to (I think?!!?). In running its scan, it *sees* a SCSI device it cannot identify, hence the flashing ?. BTW, what is your reason for connecting your MAC --> ASR? Any other stabs at this? Khew ------------------------------ From: Ack Date: Tue, 4 Oct 1994 09:23:11 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Re: ASR for techno...opinions wanted... YES! Currently, my ASR is the center of my studio. In fact, it's saved me tonnes of $$ that I would have spent for effects, a mixer, etc. It's not a total solution, but it works if you plan ahead when you start doing a song. This is what I do to "fake" a studio in the ASR-10. -USE STEREO DRUM SAMPLES. Typically I'd put a drum machine through a stereo effects unit and sample it. This way you can have a different effect on each drum, without using up any effects. You get a much more professional sound this way. Be careful with the amount of effects that you use, or you get mush. -USE LFO PANNING. This really animates the sounds, and makes static sampled synths sound more analogish. -USE FILTERING AS AN EQ. Unfortunately, the ASR doesn't have an EQ section (other than an effect.) But you can use the filter-section as an EQ. Unfortunately, you'll have to turn up the sample your EQ'ing, which may mean turning everything else down. Use EQ to make a sample or sound stick out of the mix, or blend in a bit better. I use EQ on guitar samples for that throbbing, hurt-your-chest sound. Drums don't mind a little EQ either. -ABUSE YOUR EFFECTS. Get as much out of them as you can. Use a "multi-effect" and route your sounds accordingly. Sounds that don't need any effects can go to output 3, while some sounds can share the effect in out 1, and other can share the effect in out 2. Edit your effects to get the sound you want. Remember to set the delay's to the tempo you're using (there's a handy time/tempo chart near the end of the ASR manual -- memorize it! :-) ) It doesn't take _that_ many effects to make a song sound good. Be careful that you don't turn you song into mush by overusing effects. Sometimes you won't need any effects -- it depends on your sound. Kraftwerk didn't use many effects. -MIX IN YOUR ASR. Control all volume levels via MIDI and on the ASR panel. You can even control a couple external devices (with effects) this way (if you don't mind them hard-panned.) Once you have a song done, go through and mix it with the ASR. It helps if you have good monitoring speakers (flat response curve), and something else on CD to compare it to. You can also assign MIDI controllers to specific functions (such as pan) and control them via MIDI as well. Experiment -- there's tonnes of stuff you can control (like sample start-points.) And there's tonnes more you can do (I'm not giving away ALL my secrets!) I typically do a song in the ASR, then move the entire thing to a studio where live guitars, bass, and vocals are added. The ASR stuff usually gets dumped to two tracks only, since it's pre-mixed so well. If you're looking to do some techno-ish stuff, the ASR's great. You'll want the Waveboy Resonant Filter disk. I have a Roland Juno-2 I use for techno-ish stuff. I route it through the ASR's delay's while a funky beat is playing on the ASR. Instant Techno! It's so easy, you can have an all-night rave all by yourself in your basement (much to the dismay of your neighbors.) Now if only I could get some lasers... -Mark - -- "Key chuckles. I ran into some trouble recently with a few things. One thing to note is that if you include tempo changes on an external sequencer, you need to reprogram those changes into your ASR-10 sequences, since you're external sequencer will be in sync mode. I didn't look into it very carefully, but it seemed like a pain to transfer some of my continous tempo changes from Cakewalk to the ASR-10. Also, if you record on Song Tracks, all sequences must be at the same tempo and have the same meter. One way around this is to just record stuff at the same tempo, but without a metronome, and just play however you want, but if you have complicated tempo changes, I found it easier to just skip the hard disk recording, and go direct to tape. Also, I recorded a single vocal track over the length of one song on Audio Track A, and afterwards, I added a number of small sections of background vocals on Audio Track B. I triggered the small sections just before each vocal recording. The problem came when I bounced these two tracks together. The small sections worked great until towards the end of the song, where the background vocals started to shift from the lead, triggering later than the lead vocals. I'm not sure if this is something I set up wrong, but it seemed like maybe the audio triggers were slipping as the song progressed. I can't remember if I mentioned this one already, but I found a way to consistently crash my ASR-10. Basically, I start up the system and configure audio tracks, hit rec+play and keep the track. Then I hit rec+play again to record over the old stuff, and before the first track would have ended, I stop the recording. So what should happen is that the entire track should be erased by the new recording, since the first audio trigger was overlapped by the second. What happens is that the display shows "editing..." for a while, and then I get error 057. Anyway, it works okay if I let the second recording run completely until the end of the track (which is the length of the first recording). Just a few notes for anyone who's interested. The ASR-10 is a superb machine for techno. Depending on your level of professionalism it will be a better or worse choice than a 16+. Let me explain. The 16+ has an almost identical architecture to the ASR. The synthesis system is almost identical, the sampling playback method is identical and the operating system is almost identical. Difference is, the ASR is expandable to 16Mb (as opposed to the 16+'s 2Mb) and the ASR also has some handy resampling tools as well as direct to disk recording, more FX algorithms and timestretching/compression. This is good. The 16+ will teach you more about how to sample well than the ASR. You learn to be economical with your memory due to its limitations (looping samples efficiently, changing sample rates to minimise memory and so on), you learn to push the effects section to the max and you also learn some synthesis techniques by necessity (you can't resample a boring sound through some fancy parametric EQ, filter with Q or what have you to make it more interesting). It is also cheaper. If you have the money and you are reasonably professional then the ASR is the way to go. Smashing sound, good features all in the one package. You'll find, however, that any Ensoniq sampler post-Mirage has no resonant filters. This causes problems galore for techno. There are some tricks to get around this one but, in all cases, you'll need to have occasional access to analog synths. I have plenty of analog in my studio but no outboard FX so I sample analog sounds and play them through FX on the 16+ that forms the hub of the studio. It's a great controller keyboard and it also sends MIDI clocks out when the sequencer is running. This is also good. I can sync my MSQ-100 to them and hence use my SH-101, MC-202, TB-303 and ARP Axxe as sequenced instruments. Wow! Any Ensoniq sampler post-Mirage can transmit on up to 8 MIDI channels at once via the keyboard or the sequencer and you can do some gee-whizz controller-keyboard things with it. I generally drive about three external MIDI instruments from the 16+. You can also do some neato wave modulation using the loop points on single-cycle waves. This is the most "analog" that Ensoniq samplers will sound. You can use the modulation as a method to seemingly detune wave sources and chorus them for a rich, padded effect. This is not the same as detuning the waves themselves and produces a noticeably different effect. As concerns more resonant analog timbres, forget it. Sample them and use a number of tricks to get them to sound good (transwave modulation is good for this but it's a right pain in the neck to get going to your satisfaction...). Solutions: 1) Use dd-disks formatted to 800k with epsdisk(default). Copy the .gkh file as usual to the dd-floppy. I believe the standard is to give them .ins suffixes. I thought I saw something posted about converstion to .wav format. To make midi files with the sequencer simply (assuming you have a PC and midi card) have the eps play the sequence and record it in a software sequencer (there are shareware versions in some directories on oak). Save it as a midi file on your PC disk. Modify the instrument patches with the pc sequencer to the general midi instruments and you have a general midi file playable on any keyboard supporting general midi. Can I control effects seperately with a mod source? What else can I do? I am trying to make the most out of this setup and I'm having a tough time so any point in the right direction would help. Hey, I'd really like to keep informed about this program. I'm long time wondering what sounds it will produce. A simple wave-morphing program ( morphing slowly from one waveform into the other, generating one long changing sound that can be used as an EPS-transwave ) is still one of the items on my programs-to-write list. However, currently I'm to busy writing an experimental program that will generate sounds by simulating old synthesizer techniques. The program will present the user with a C-like programming language to define configurations of modules like Oscillators, Envelopes, Filters or Delays. As an input the program will also use a library of waveforms including the basic sine, sawtooth, square and triangle. It would also be nice to have some wave-morphed sounds in this library. I put together a really handy orchestra file (the file which describes how instruments are constructed) which has a few general purpose instruments in it -- one with one oscillator, one with two detuned oscillators to give a chorus effect, and one with a nice resonant filter sweep. I also put together a score file (the file which defines waveforms and tells Csound what notes to play when) and I meticulously tested the waveforms for sound quality (there are about 3 or 4 ways to define a square wave, for instance, and they vary in execution speed and sound quality). This score file contains about 13 different waveforms. Csound allows you to combine these waveforms in many different ways, and you can run them through a "DCA" which is controlled by an envelope, just like a synth. Very powerful. I was thinking about putting together a Windows program with a bunch of nice controls that would allow you to string together these oscillators and DCA's like on a real synth, and then have it generate waveforms in either .wav or .aiff format. (.wav would allow for previewing on a soundcard, while .aiff would allow you to load the sound into your EPS/ASR/TS) There would be two possible ways to do this -- first, the Windows program could generate Csound code and run Csound (probably pretty slow), or I could strip the important parts out of the Csound source code and generate the waveforms myself (probably faster, but would take a lot more work). Also, it would be nice to have the ability to spit out .efe files so these sounds could go straight into a .gkh, but I don't know how to put raw wave data into one of these files (anybody want to help me on this one?) The main reason I want a tool like this is to be able to harness the power of transwaves. I experimented a bit with Csound output and transwaves, and the results were very encouraging. The key, I think, is to make the length of the loop (in samples) a power of two. Then you don't get the annoying scratchy sounds when you move the loop through the sample. Csound would be ideal, since you can explicitly control things like the loop length. (For example, you could have a very short loop, of say, 2048 samples, and every 2048 samples, you have Csound adjust the cutoff frequency of a resonant filter, so when you load the sample into your sampler, you set the loop length at 2048, and move through the sample using transwaves. Should sound like a fairly smooth filter sweep -- one which is completely under your control in terms of time, as opposed to a straight sample of a filter sweep!) - -Jason `,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`, `,`,these,are,dangerous,days--to`say`what,you,feel`is,to`make,your`own`grave`,`, `jason`priebe,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,priebe@cs.unc.edu, `,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`, ------------------------------ From: darrell@twics.com Date: Fri, 14 Oct 1994 21:31:23 JST Subject: RE: Sound morphing Mark Borcherding correctly notes that I got the ftp address wrong for the MIT csound archive. Here's what a bank records: The path of a sound currently represented in RAM at the time of saving a bank, the bank effect, and the Pre-sets currently in the machine. So what's a path? It is SCSI# (or floppy or FLASH), DIR/DIR/DIR/(however many)/disklabel. This is just a guess, but I don't think multiple part sounds are accessible within a bank. Here is a copy of a FAX that I sent to Ensoniq regarding problems I'm having with the TS10, If anyone else is having the same problems or would like to test there TS10's to see if the problems exist please let me know the results. I have V3.05 software in my TS10. regards Craig All of the problems below are certainly relevant to the SD1 & VFX-SD, but also seem to there on the TS10 as well. The Problem. MIDI volume changes are not being transmitted from the sequence tracks whilst the machine is PLAYING in song mode. A) Create a simple 2 bar sequence of a drum pattern on local track 1. B) Select and define track 2 to be channel 2, program 50, volume 100 and set to status MIDI. Do not record any info on this track. C) Copy the sequence to the next location and select track 2 again. D) Change the volume of track 2 to 75 and save your changes. E) now select either sequence and the volume change will be sent to the receiving instrument on channel 2. F) Create a SONG or edit SONG-00 to play each of the created sequence one after another like so. SEQ1 - SEQ2 - SEQ1 - SEQ2 - SEQ1 - SEQ2 etc... G) See if the volume changes which were defined on the sequence tracks are sent out on channel 2 to the receiving instrument. I found that they were not sent. H) Now repeat the above exercise, but put some data on track 2 of each sequence so it has a dot (period) on the track status. I still found that the volume changes were not sent. The Next Problem. MIDI Program changes are not being transmitted from the sequence tracks whilst the machine is PLAYING in song mode. Repeat steps A - F of the above steps, but substitute the volume change in step D to a program change of 50 to 51. G) See if program changes are sent out on channel 2 to the receiving module. I found that they weren't. H) Now record some note data on to track 2 channel 2, of each sequence and run the song mode test again, this time the program changes are sent. I) Change the program change of seq1 to 1 (MIDI 0) and run the song mode test again. Here I found that even with data recorded onto the track, a program change of 1 (MIDI 0) will never get sent. The Next Problem. When inserting data into a track, the existing data is shifted down the track to an unusable jumble at one end. This has been reported to me by several other SD1 & VFX-SD users with different SW revisions. A) Take an existing track, wether it be a song or sequence track, with note data recorded onto it. B) Use the event edit to insert a volume change at 01:01:01, save the track. C) Use the event edit to look into the track again, all the previous note data is shifted way down the track to totally different places. The Solution. Record a track next to the one you want to edit, insert the volume change on the new track and merge it with the existing one and delete the new one. ------------------------------ From: A.Spiceley@poda.wins.icl.co.uk Date: Mon, 17 Oct 1994 10:11:51 +0100 Subject: RE: Re: Questions about banks I believe the problem with multiple disk instrument loading in banks was supposed to have been fixed in the OS 1.3 - but I confess I haven't tried it since acquiring the OS. Thanks again, Arno van Goch ------------------------------ From: Arno van Goch <100145.1021@compuserve.com> Date: 17 Oct 94 07:07:23 EDT Subject: Avarage Sound Two years ago I've written a little program called AVSOUND. AVSOUND would take a wavesample and convert it to another wavesample that represents something that could best be described as 'The average sound' of the original wavesample. AVSOUND does not use Spectrum Analysis, but a brute force method. The procedure is this : The destination wavesample (usually longer than the source wavesample ) is treated as an looped tape. The source wavesample is mixed in at random starting points. After say 1000 mixes the individual mixes cannot be distinguished and the process is finished. This procedure introduces the following features : - - The destination wavesample has a perfect loop. - - The destination wavesample can be of any size, although long loops work best, so you won't recognize a repetition of the wavesample. - - Because of the randomness of the mixing, the destination wavesample sounds monotonous yet alive. The big problem is that all information about attack and decay is lost, so it is necessary to try to recreate it by using envelopes. Secondly the result largely depends on the source- wavesample. A single tone which fades in and out works best. To get things really interesting I use the following technique: I take one source wavesample and generate two destination wavesamples. One of 100000 samples and one of lets say 100093 samples. I pan the first wavesample a little to the left, and pan the second a little to the right. Also I detune the wavesamples a little. Because the wavesamples are not exactly the same, the detuning doesn't create a synthetic sounding chorus. Secondly, because the two wavesamples run with two different loops, it takes ages for the whole sound to repeat, so what I get is a ever changing sound. After working with the program for a while, I decided that it's best use is to create soft background sounds. My questions are : - - Is anyone familiar with the mixing procedure used in the AVSOUND program ( are there any existing programs that do the same thing ) ? - - Is anyone interested in the program ? ( so it gives me some motivation to make some final changes and put it on the net ) ==== Arno van Goch ------------------------------ From: Jason Priebe Date: Mon, 17 Oct 1994 08:35:54 -0500 (EDT) Subject: Re: Avarage Sound > Two years ago I've written a little program called AVSOUND. > AVSOUND would take a wavesample and convert it to another > wavesample that represents something that could best be > described as 'The average sound' of the original wavesample. ------------------------------ From: hardy@KMERL.Research.Panasonic.COM (Wesley hardy) Date: Mon, 17 Oct 94 11:22:23 EDT Subject: K2000 sample conversion What's the best process to convert K2000 *.krz files? I'm desperately looking for a good rez sweep in csound at the moment & would love to see an example...a decent 303 acid bass clone was posted on the Exeter csound list a couple of months ago, but would like to see how to do a parameterized sweep as well...csound is powerful but hints help... ** If you email a reply to this, please send it to darrell@twics.com, not to this address ** - - Darrell ------------------------------ From: AXGRINDER@delphi.com Date: Mon, 17 Oct 1994 22:44:10 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Midi Status Thanks for the tip on the CD-Rom SCSI id#4 and not being able to load banks Per.Next question, is there any way to change the default midi status from "both" to "midi".I'm using the ASR 10 as a controller at work and I'm trying make it easier for the other guys there to get used it (they're used to a Roland D-50).Thanks C-Ya Axgrinder P.S. Brassage, or granular synthesis is a technique that has been around since the good old days of analog musiqe concrete. I have written several [macintosh and Cmix] programs that perform a similar process to what you describe (except that they don't generate loops, just straight files). One such program (with a graphic user interface allowing time varying breakpoint control) is CurveControl [for Macintosh] (ftp: ftp.latrobe.edu.au/pub/music). The primary difference between the process you describe and standard granulation is that usually only short grains (10 - 30ms) are extracted from the source file and windowed(amp. eneveloped) (with a gaussian or raised cosine envelope) usually between 100 and 300 grains per second distributed into the output file will provide a smooth texture. I have also used CurveControl to generate non time-varying textures, they loop well with a bi-directional crossfade. I have been thinking about writing a granular loop maker for a while (I have all the code, would take 3hours max.) Mabee we can both do our own versions. It would be written in ANSI C, my current platforms being NeXTStep 3.2 and Macintosh. (Soundfile formats are the main problem in making it portable to other platforms) QUESTION TO ALL: If I (or anyone else) writes a program that generates an output file of raw 16bit samples, can people in the MSDOS world easily get that data into a usable soundfile format? Your method sounds a bit like the "synth loop" algorithm in the EPS, which (supposedly) does something very similar. I like your thing of having two different wavesamples from the same source sample with slightly different lengtghs. A question though: do you smooth the sample in any way (for example by applying an amplitude envelope to the initial sample)? I'd guess that you could "smooth" out the sound a bit by "fading off" the beginning and end of the sample. If you have a "click" in your sample, it's going to still be there in the final wavesample, repeated 1000 times. This might add an interesting distorted character to the sound, but it would be nice to control this. Sure, just change the status to "MIDI" yourself, and save the GLOBAL PARAMETERS to your boot-up disk. You'll find that choice in the COMMAND-SYSTEM/MIDI pages. Every time you load up the system OS, you'll load up your global parameters as well, automatically. The problem is that the Soundblaster 16 will play through my 16+, but won't ley me record. So you know what the problem could be? I'm connecting the 16+ to MIDI in and OUT of the SoundBlaster, so theoretically it SHOULD work. Also, can anyone tell me, if I've got my 16+ and a drum machine - how can I connect them both up to the Soundblaster - I know that I must use the MIDI through, but can someone tell me what goes where.
