Confirmed...The ASR does time compression/expansion in the range of 50% to 250% (or was it 200%?)...It takes a very long time, though. I got the EPS16+ sysex spec from the swedish ensoniq distributor but unfortunately he could only supply about 48 or 49 of the approx 50 pages. Of course the missing page had this information together with information of how the data is sent. I have figured out how the data is packed into 12 and 20 bit words etc but I am not really sure about the exact overall syntax of the dump. First there's the usual sysex header followed by the ensoniq code and the product code. Is there anything else then or is it just the dump according to the spec ? I assume that everything ends with the normal end-of-sysex code. Do any of you have access to that manual and can tell me ? Peter Johnson arioch@netcom.com - ------------------------------- Dear Pete, I own Galaxy's Editor/Librarian and they do not support the line of Ensoniq samplers. They usually support synths that either have ROM based samples built in or sythns based on internal sound generation devices (eg. FM sythesis, SY- 77, Korg-o-rama and the like). I tried asking Ensoniq and Opcode a long time ago if there were plans for the EPS or EPS 16+. My guess is that the editor could not be put into Galaxy's scheme of things since this would take up too much hard disc space for the samples and that certain sysex commands couldn't be implemented clearly enough. A good example of this is Opcode's editor for the K-2000S. It is extremely well thought out, but getting around on it tends to be a little bit tricky since the editor only edits the filters and envelopes associated with each voice set up. You also have to go through more than one window to see every parameter. I understand that this is necessary, due to the complexity of the K-2000's system architecture. The same thing would probably be true if they designed an editor for the EPS or ASR 10.It also handles the samples position on the keyboard as well as keyboard range. It also does not edit low level wavesample parameters. This includes things like wave sample start, end, loop start, loop end, etc. You have to import and edit samples yourself from outside the program. This can be a hassle since you have to edit your samples on one program, import it to the Kurzweil, and then position and edit it using the Galaxy editor. Yes it would be nice if they could roll everything up into one program. Hope this helps you out. It has been wroking fine for me. I am using Vision w/ an ASR, a couple other modules: Set the MIDI IN MODE (EDIT/SYS) to MULTI. You then must set the MIDI STATUS (EDIT/INST) of instrument to MIDI. Then you will want to set each instrument onto a different channel. So, you'll have a typical setup as follows. You'll have, say, eight instruments loaded, on channels 1 through 8. Also have KEYBOARD THRU checked in the SETUPS menu of Vision (assuming the same in SV). To change instruments, rather than hitting the Instrument/Track button on the ASR, select it in Vision. Hi Pete, Welcome to midi hell!! Isn't it great!! I figured since the ASR 10 isn't too far away from the EPS 16+ maybe I can help you out. Right now I'm running my IIci with Opcode's Studio Vision Pro, so our setups aren't too much different. I also just picked up a 520c to gig out on the road with. Each instrument has it's own midi configuration in the EPS, I'm preety sure this is probably what is happenning in you ASR 10 and this is where you are experiencing the problem of layering sounds playing all together at once. Here's a simple checklist: 1. On the ASR 10 make sure that your mode is for multi and not for poly or omni. 2. Turn Local on the keyboard to off. Use SV to determine which channel you'll want to transmit on. Each instrument has it's own midi out channel. If you scroll through the instrument parameters you'll see the midi out channel numbers. Set them up or leave em. SV's usually smart enough to redirect them to the channel that you tell it. (up in SV's control panel on the left hand side.) 3. Set Keyboard Thru on SV to on. (Make sure the check box is checked to on. This passes the keyboard controller back through to your ASR on the correct midi number. (Keyboard thru in backround should be set to off.) Now for the secret part: 4. On the ASR 10 scroll through the sequencer tracks menu, you'll see a set up for the "midi channel in" assignment for each slot. Set each one to a different number. This sets up a seperate "midi channel in" for each slot. 5. On the ASR 10 save your gobal parameter settings. This will save all of your hard work that you've just done. 6. Make sure no sequences are loaded into the ASR 10. (Maybe sequence 1 or song 1is always loaded)(This is probably where your initial "midi channel in" assignments are located.) I haven't bothered to figure it all out. 7. Now when you load in a sound to slot 1, it should only play solt one. Remember to set the corresponding midi channel in SV's control panel. Sorry about the program changes section on SV, but they were designed for Korg-o- rama and the like, where one program change would take you directly to the sound. On the ASR and EPS with a hard drive hooked up, you'll have to go through the hierarchy of the hard drive's directory to get where you'll want to be. This should be about 6 to 8 program changes depending how deep you'll want to set up the directory levels on your hard drive. You'll also have to stagger them time wise, as it takes the hard drive some time to get around to reading the directories and the sounds. (About 1/2 a second through eachdirectory and 3 to 7 or 8 sec. when loading a sound, depending on how big it is, and how fragmented it is on the hard drive.) Have any questions? You can e-mail me directly at: pbuchta@mail.med.cornell.edu Oh yes!! I would > really like to hear from anyone who HAS gotten an EPSm-formatted floppy to > not stink. I format ASR diskettes (really ASR-computer diskettes, not the same thing as a regular EPS diskette) all the time using EPSm, and they work fine. But when you want to put a download onto the ASR-c diskette, you have to create a new ASR-c image, pull the instruments out of the full gkh file (the ASR-c image is somewhat smaller than the full gkh image), and then write this new image to the ASR-c floppy. If I remember correctly, if you try to write a gkh to an ASR-c floppy, EPSm is expecting to see a regular EPS diskette in the floppy drive, not an ASR-c diskette. Hope this clears up some of the confusion (it will probably just create more) - -Jason `,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`, `,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,if`you`ask`no,questions, then`beware,of`lies,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`, `jason`priebe,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,priebe@cs.unc.edu, `,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`,`, ------------------------------ From: "Steigerwald, David G." So I don't know if there is anything wrong with it? I can not see anything obvious technically wrong with the file, and I do not have any problems with loading and playing the demo. I use my own private program on a Mac. Now I don't think there are any programs available for the Mac that will recognize this format directly though. I know EPSm will not recognize a HD floppy image in a gkh wrapping. So what? say the lovely people..? Also that file is so big that it is impossible to write the file to an IBM floppy to transfer the file from a Mac to a PC to do the work there. If the file will work on a PC I don't know, but the Mac guys are out of luck. Rather than asking directly if any have had luck, I ask whether you have noticed the BLUESDRUMS drums? It has a sample of typical phonograph hiss and noise to give the sequence a feeling of coming right off a record from the period of the song which is in an old R&B/Soul style. So in quite or open parts, like drum breaks the hiss sets in. Quite amusing! I thought there was something wrong with the drumset by just playing that one. As an experiment you can download the someones-got demo from /incoming. Hope I did not do anything inappropriate. It is divided into 3 separate normal gkh files. It was so loaded it would not fit on two. This also left room for putting a version of the song in EPS classic format which I translated from the ASR song with EPSm. Both the 16+ and classic owners can load that song. There are instructions on which instrument to load on which track in the accompanying text file. So all the samplers represented should be able to give the hiss a run. I have downloaded the upload myself and checked that it works. I think that the downward compatibility and upward usability that we see in these samplers are great. Salute to those responsible for this. To an end user it can be OK to know the slight differences there are. Then a user having a Classic or 16+ can tweak the right parameters a little for better results when using ASR samples, or for instance a Classic owner using 16+ samples and so forth. These differences are also good to know for the sound builders. We have been talking about slight differences in parameter representations before. Today we/I'll talk about the SAMPLE END parameter. I have not noticed it before, but to me it appears to be a difference in sample end representations on the ASR and the EPS. I should really ask: Am I wrong? This revealed itself in the CR-78-DRUMS instrument on the SOMEONE-GOT ASR demo. Three of the drum sounds will have a click/pop when played on a Classic or a 16+, but no pop on an ASR-10. The pop is gone by moving the sample end parameter by one ( from 4000 to 3999 ). That I have not noticed it before might be that in the music I make, pops and clicks do not appear as anything extraordinary:-). Is this sample end thing a well known difference? Tomorrow we will talk about differences in sequence events and how the spelling for foreign languishes differs for the Karaoke event in the 3 different samplers. Best Case - 2.4 ROM chip (installed by Ensoniq Service Center - check by using CMD-ENV1-ENV1), OS 2.49, Ensoniq Memory Expander and SP-2 SCSI. 2. SCSI and Expander must be matched - PS with PS Systems, Ensoniq with Ensoniq Maartist's with Maartists. The only exception to this is you can use Ensoniq SCSI with Maartist Expander; you just have to have the Ensoniq Service guy modify the back to install it. Ensoniq SP-1 is OK; that's the majority of Ensoniq SCSI kits. It doesn't have internal termination, so if you have an SP-1 instead of a SP-2, you'll probably need an external terminator - available at most computer stores. They look like little 25-25 pin adaptors. 3. Procedures A. Turn on your hard drive first; after that has spun up turn on the EPS. Watch the hard drive as the EPS boots up off the floppy - it should blink as the EPS recognises the drive. If it doesn't, no luck. B. Try to format the drive; if it doesn't work, your drive probably isn't compatible with the EPS. Options to take: 1. Get upgraded toBEST CASE, or 2. Get another hard drive, or 3. Switch the SCSI number on the drive to any other number (not 3), turn everything off, and try the procedure again. Quantum drives aren't the most compatible; try a Syquest or Seagate. You either pay the high price (in terms of large data files) for good quality audio, pay a lesser price for lower quality audio, or deal with sequencer data, be it in the form of standard MIDI files or something more Ensoniq-specific (like the image of disk which contains sequences and the instruments they need). This isn't intended as a flame, but I don't see any other ways to get around the problem of large files. However, I don't > want to spend hours downloading 20 megs of a file for a 2 minute demo. > Isn't there a way of playing audio files on the Internet via SLIP? Unfortunately, average Internet bandwidth is still too low (and/or too heavily used) for large real-time data such as a CD-quality audio demo would require. If you're curious about doing audio over the Internet, take a look at the MBONE project (the Internet Multicast Backbone.) It's used for voice materials, and even though we have a great connection here, it still has dropouts and periods of low quality. There are other projects that do things like MIDI over the Internet (but that's not what you're referring to.) Even with a great connection to the "backbones", you're sharing bandwidth with myriads of other users, including ftp (large streaming data), telnet, WWW, gopher, mud games, etc. (lots of bursty things), and the people at the supercomputer centers that transfer multigigabyte files around. This causes you to have audio breakups at best, or complete loss of synchronization with the source at worst. A SLIP/PPP connection is really no better (and in some ways is worse) than dialing directly into a host. If you get a 56K leased line and run SLIP/PPP over it, you're essentially using the same bandwidth that a voice connection (read: not CD-quality audio) would get through the traditional phone system. Without lossy compression (not good for a demo) you're not going to do too well. So, for now, it's probably best to stick with MIDI files or other sequencer data (like our EPS/ASR sequencer files) until something better comes along, like much faster bandwidth universally available. While it's not a good solution for multi-instrument productions, or where post-processing is used to add some cool effects, it's ok for a lot of uses. When hooking up hard drives to the EPS Classic, it's important to remember that Ensoniq followed the brain-damaged Apple Mac SCSI spec. In essence, you must ensure that your hard disk has the ability to disable "unit attention condition". This is sometimes accomplished by setting a jumper or dip switch on the hard disk - unfortunately more often a manufacturer would sell two versions of a given hard disk - one with unit attention condition enabled for PC/UNIX/etc users, and another (more expensive) version with it disabled, for Mac users. A good rule of thumb is: if a hard drive works with an older-type Mac, it'll work with an EPS. Re> However, I don't want to spend hours downloading 20 megs of a file for Re> a 2 minute demo. Isn't there a way of playing audio files on the Re> Internet via SLIP? Since this is a conference for EPS/ASR Thanks for all your input. As you can see, my understanding of the Internet is limited (at most). And I don't take it as a flame when someone questions me ... However, I read somewhere that you can actually play an audio file directly off the Internet without a download. I would think that is possible since PSI is offering videoconferencing on the Internet. I am not sure SLIP/PPP is going to cut it. Maybe the article I read refers to ISDN... hmmm... I wish I could find the article again... Anyway, I still find sharing MIDI files between sampler-based machines rather limited, especially when Ensoniq allows you to tweak the settings of instruments (via presets etc). So, here is another question: can I save sysex information for my EPS-16+ so that I can load banks, presets and instruments etc. I would like to auto-load the stuff from Cakewalk when I pull the .wrk file up. Again, this may be an impossible task, but one can only dream right?! :). Also, is there a Windows-based program where I can save all my EPS sound files on my PC and load the EPS directly from my PC? I think not, but it never hurts to ask! Recently I replied to a message that obviously was a request to subscribe to the EPS mailing list. I offered the suggestion of sending that request to eps-request@oak.oakland.edu since that address is the only one capable of honoring such a request. When composing the reply, I chose the option of sending it to all subscribers of the mailing list. It occurred to me later that if the individual making that request had not yet been added to the subscription list, then the message might be sent to everyone on the list except that individual (the one who might stand to gain the most from the reply). So, here's my question: Upon responding "yes" to the prompt "send reply to all subscriber's?" when making a reply, will the sender of the original message (the message being replied to) be among those receiving the reply if he is not a subscriber? I'd send this question to Jeff, but as you might imagine, I've pestered him too much already just trying to learn to upload(:-). Laine D. When working with a pan location on an EPS 16 or ASR you can go from -99 to 99. Does a controller value of 0 do anything? and is there a math formula that can simulate the interpolating the EPS/ASR does to covnert this data? My formula: (Controller# x 1.5667) - 100 = Pan Location. Of course I have Pan = -99, Pan Mod = XCTRL, +99. 2) I want to randomly pan a percussion sound in a narrow area of the stereo field - mainly between -20 and +20. How do I set this up accurately. In my example above for pan mod from a controller, setting the Pan to -99 and the mod to +99 effectively pans the the sound over 199 possible locations. What do I do with this smaller spectrum? Set Pan = -20 and Pan Mod = Random, +20? Or should it be Pan = -20, Pan Mod = Random, +40 ??? My writing partner and I had an agonising weekend setting up our Syquest 270's a few weeks ago. His worked first time, mine would give FILE OPERATION ERROR either before it finished formatting the cart or just as it tried writing the O/S to the cart. Since we had mirror systems, a lot of testing proved that it wasn't the ASR or the Syquest or the cart, but the little $25 cable in between. Now for the trivia. I've been thinking this over and although it's more a dream than reality, I was considering buying an effects processor (DP/4 of course) when I thought why not go for an ASR rack and get anotehr sampler in the bargain. Question? The ASR has a fixed SCSI ID of 3 so how is it possible to chain two ASR's together on the same SCSI bus. How 'fixed' is fixed, and can it be changed by me, can I order it changed or does it stay at ID 3 till the end of the world? P.S. A friend bought a K2000 and it fell apart on the second night. The mod wheels went bad. Before he had a chance to take it back, he discovered the DSP is not 100%. I guess we cherish what we have, just as long as it's working. No requirement. You'll find the 16-Plus works well, because it has a much enhanced SCSI port and internal termination. No problema. Of > course I have Pan = -99, Pan Mod = XCTRL, +99. > I hope I'm answering this question right on the head. If we're speaking of sys-ex controller data, I don't believe there is an adequate formula. (Example: 99 in decimal is +77 EPS-style, but your formula works it out to +55.) In my parameter editor, I simply use a table which is below. (After everything.) Maybe some of the geniuses on-line can work out a formula. Also, how will you deal with negative numbers? Sys-Ex-wise, they work like this: 125(EPS +97) is Hex 01 3D, 126(EPS +98) is 01 3E, 127(EPS +99) is 01 3F, then it wraps around - 129(EPS -99) is 02 01! Notice that Hex 02 00 isn't used on the EPS (value -100), except on the Track Pan, which it is used for default to WS. For further investigation, Brian, get a midi monitor and change front panel controls and see what the EPS spits out. That's really helpful, because what the EPS puts out in PUT PARAMETER commands will dictate what you input into it. > 2) I want to randomly pan a percussion sound in a narrow area of the > stereo field - mainly between -20 and +20. Or > should it be Pan = -20, Pan Mod = Random, +40 ??? > > My ears tells me that the Pan control determines the initial point where the pan starts, and the randomness is simply determined by the positive or negative value of the pan mod. I can't find any reason for the positive or negative values, because you can set the PAN to -99 and the PAN MOD to RNDM - -99, and it will still sound the same (putting it in Brian's terms, it still randomizes over 199 possible values). For your smaller spectrum, I'd set the PAN to 0 (Actually it doesn't seem to matter), and Random Pan to +20 (or -20, it doesn't amtter) or less. I tried it and that sounds right. By the way, for the interest of the readers, I assume you have a 16-Plus or an ASR, right? Original owners have to deal with only 7 (or is it 9?) pan locations. Bleah! And on another thread: >On the subject of SCSI problems, I have a me-to and a trivia question. >Now for the trivia. How 'fixed' is >fixed, and can it be changed by me, can I order it changed or does it >stay at ID 3 till the end of the world? This answer is - There is no reason for an EPS/ASR to ever want to talk with another EPS/ASR through SCSI, with one possible exception - sending a sys-ex wavedata packet. You're right, the SCSI's are fixed - they can't be changed, but fortunatly there's no reason to change them. Macintoshes are fixed on 7, I believe. If you are accessing one hard drive from two EPS/ASR's on one SCSI chain, it's no problem. One EPS/ASR asks for the data, the hard drive sends it to that one, even if both EPS/ASR's are set to the same number. The SCSI spec apparantly provides for this and seperates the units beyond the SCSI numbers. And concerning Ensoniq e-mail: >I think Ensoniq do listen to their customers which is great. However, seeing that >the Internet is growing exponentially and seeing that those involved in it are likely >to have above average technical knowledge--this list is an example--wouldn't it >make more sense for Ensoniq to be virtually connected? It would certainly make this Ensoniq customer *very* happy... :-) I agree with Matt completely - I hope the time comes soon when Ensoniq Customer Service opens "On-Line shop", because they will have to eventually. Why not? It's easy for Customer Service to do; just get input when you can (when you're not busy, a mangers dream - work to fill in slack time), and it satisfies the customer, which is unconditionally of supreme value to any business. On several occasions (not all, just some), I've seen Ensoniq turn down the opportunity to please their customers through simple services they could provide. IMHO, should value as gold any opportunity to please and satisfy their customers (within reason). Of course some things are too costly to please the end-user, such as a $100 ASR-10 would be consumer-pleasing, but would kill Ensoniq! On the original EPS, when the pan parameter was set to random, a sustained note would "stay put" at its random location in the stereo field. Perhaps one of you out there can give me a hand. When putting together a sequence, I often have several programs in each sequence. Until now, I've never noticed that when you do replace with effects to update a track *and* its effects, this changes the effect for the entire sequence, not just for the current track. Well, now I've got a sequence that uses three programs with three very distinct effects, i.e. setting the sequence to use the effect of one of the tracks causes the other tracks sound incorrect for the sequence. How do I get around this? Am I being unrealistic if I think I can do it? I've got an external sequencer (Cakewalk) if that would help, but I prefer to do the actual sequencing on the TS-10, then dump the result via MIDI to Cakewalk for touch-ups and other tweaking. I have a feeling, however, this is a hardware limitation, not bad OS programming on Ensoniq's part. I'd like to hear one > >good reason not to. > > !!! > Well, as an Engineer here at Motorola, I used to have some customer support responsibilities when the real customer support people didn't know enough. Anytime you're talking about more services (even simple ones), you consider staffing to support those services. Also, from personal experience and in talking to other engineers in different companies, a lot of the front-line tech support people are not always that useful. This results in questions passed on to development engineering, which is supposed to concentrate on development. So if you add new services, you also have to consider the trickle-down drain on your engineering staff to support them. In terms of support on this list, my guess is Ensoniq may also have some issues with turning personnel loose on this list. We've seen some hot moments on the list, and even some Ensoniq bashing; just imagine how a few poorly stated words from an Ensoniq engineer could influence such a situation. From a PR perspective, it's a sticky situation, also. I'm not saying that these kinds of services should automatically be ruled out!!!!! I'm just trying to put some perspective on all the issues in adding these kinds of services. Nosin' right along, Zoltan. Hey, anyone need any Woodstock tickets? Second question. In the FAQ there is a list of drives that will work with the original EPS, and it also says that "most drives will work with the EPS-16." Before I buy, does anyone have a list of drives that will definitely _not_ work with the 16, so that I know what to avoid? Below is an edit of what came out for your information. /Thomas Sj|land Hi guys, In the mailing list on EPS samplers that I subscribe to (a musical instrument based on using short samples of audio data as the basis for design of MIDI-controlled "virtual musical instruments") there is a short discussion on whether you can play an audiostream directly off the internet as opposed to the method used now of first downloading an audio file to your device with ftp and some downloading program (some support direct ftp-downloading to the sampler) and then playing it. The person who asks says he read some article about stuff similar to what you do, if I recall what I heard correctly, and people tell him one of the fundamentals of internet is that you cannot get a guaranteed bandwidth. /Thomas The only protocol that I know in the Internet that purports to guarantee resources is ST-2 and not much of the Internet supports ST-2 and probably won't. Maybe in the future there will be an Internet service that provides some guarantees (maybe predictive guarantees) but not now. Right now there is just a single best-effort service that delivers datagrams from source to destination over possibly varying routes. /Guru Thanks, Your answer fits with my assumptions. Basically guaranteed bandwidth would require some mechanism which behaves in a connection-oriented (circuit-switched) fashion, and this, I assume, is too costly to consider for the InterNet at least in its current state, Given high enough bandwidth the practical needs of most people to "pipe" audio/video-streams on the internet could be achieved with some appropriate amount of buffering even though no hard "guarantees" can be given. /Thomas You don't need connection-oriented protocols or circuits to provide guarantees. The Internet is working on some schemes to provide guarantees while preserving the datagram architecture. But these schemes are only deployed on some experimental parts of the Internet such as the Dartnet. /Guru ------------------------------ End of eps-digest V1 #107 ************************* From: owner-eps-digest To: eps-digest@oak.oakland.edu Subject: eps-digest V1 #108 Reply-To: eps Errors-To: owner-eps-digest Precedence: bulk eps-digest Friday, 12 August 1994 Volume 01 : Number 108 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Roger Leenders Date: Fri, 12 Aug 1994 09:20:45 +0000 (WET) Subject: changing effect Hi, I have a questions that mainly pertains to my live gigs, but an answer to this question would help my home sequence stuff as well. I have in my setup an eps16+ rack. The question relates to the effects of the EPS. Since I use it intensively live, I have to switch the operative effects quite often (one song requires verb, another delay, yet another flanging asf.). They way I do it now is by pressing the button of the instrument that has the required effect as an instrument effect. But this is inconvenient, since this means the eps has to stands close to me live, and I am already surrounded by too many keyboards (incl. Ensoniq stuff, naturally!). Can I switch between effects using midi? I do use a midi-controller (miditemp pmm) to set up my gear for every song (actually, I change it many times during songs as well). Could I somehow send midi-messages (sys-ex?) to the EPS changing its current effect, so without me having to press the right button on the eps? Telephone support has been and will continue to be the primary method by which we do customer service. Right now there is just a single best-effort service that >delivers datagrams from source to destination over possibly varying >routes. > And everything you didn't want to know :-) There is a significant amount of work going on in this area ... There are draft protocol specifications (and some prototype implementations) at this point in the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) for a real-time protocol (RTP) which describes some standard formats and mechanisms for transport of "real-time critical" data across the Internet ... It includes provisions for application-specific "time stamping", control protocols to maintain various types of session synchronization (So the lips move with what's spoken ... or the virtual white board pointer is pointing at the right place when the speaker is making a point), etc ... Also specs for a resource reservation protocol (RSVP) so that routers, hosts, etc will ensure that the real-time data is delivered per the application requested requirements for delay, throughput, etc ... ST-2 is around today with limited deployments ... a primary user is the Defense Simulation Internet ... where flight simulators, tank simulators, etc report their positions to each other to facillitate interactive tactical simulations. There has even been some experiments with live performed music across the net ... A piano in LA played a part while 2 other players (a cello & violin I think) in Chicago and Boston played along ... The listeners were in Washington DC. ... Of course the cross-country delay problem prevented the players from hearing the performance in toto ... There are several applications (public domain) available for doing telehpone quality (and down) audio across the net ... Van Jacobson's audio tool (vat) is one that runs on several workstations ... Schulzrinne's Nevot application ... there are also applications for slow frame video .... If you have MBONE (multicast backbone) access you can watch (and listen) to various things on the Internet ... IETF conferences, space shuttle missions .... satellite imagery is available and even the Smithsonian periodically broadcasts some JPEG images ... There is a Radio Free VAT channel (so to speak) where people with the vat application (and MBONE access) can ask for some broadcast time and broadcast music or whatever they like ... this is currently usually 64 kilo-bits-per-second PCM (8 bit audio, 8 kHz sampling rate) ... telephone like quality, but amusing none-the-less. As was mentioned, the quality of these services vary with network load but there is work going on to provide service guarantees, etc to make it more reliable ... and as network throughput rates go up, CD sound quality will be possible ... Some recording studios are interested in this type of technology and in fact some types of it is in use in fiber optic links in and between some studio shops. For some folks' information ... I have written an X-windows application that runs on SPARCs & SGI machines that allows real-time voice calls over the Internet ... It uses LPC (linear predictive coding) voice compression to get the bit rate down to rates of 2400 bits-per-second and even as low as 800 bits-per-second, and lower averages with silence detection ...(yes you read right). The low data rates keep from loading down the net much ... at its lowest it's not much more throughput than a Telnet session. Its not suitable for music as the LPC algorithms are essentially designed to model the voice tract and the vector quanitization code books for the lower rates were trained on the human voice but the novelty of free phone calls over the Internet lasts a little while. It's not quite approved/ready for release yet but anyone interested in being a beta tester, drop me a line ... It will be public domain at some point but some feedback prior to that will be useful ... Some music folks tend to have the audio-capable workstations lying around and Internet access (as well as perhaps a little interest in this sort of thing) so I thought I might find a few testers in this crowd ... This message topic spurred me to post something about it. > >You don't need connection-oriented protocols or circuits to provide >guarantees. There is no way of switching effects, even by sys-ex. The sys-ex is woefully inadequate here. What you really have to focus on is the 3 busses that route the effects, and find your solutions that way. 2. Heres a way: use a bank effect (which is really the global solution), aand use either Chorus+REverb+DDL, or even better, one of WaveBoy's effects that allow four different effect configurations in one algorithm. Use your choice of modulators (patch select, mod wheel, pedal, whatever) to change or crossfade between the busses, which are doing what you want, that is switch effects. It's just a worful inadequancy with the EPS/ASR scheme that there is only only physical effects processor, and that has to share the whole duty of "effecting". Hope this helps Concerning Reubens question on loading banks+sounds via sysex, I'm afraid I'd have to hear the question again. Sample editing will be added later, along with disk utilities and everything else we can think of. There are many programming helps, like dual-ganged Truncate./Normalize functions, and other things. I would like to add a means of stepping on a footswitch to add a fixed amount of boost for leads (or cut for non-leads), while continuing to have the pedal function. I find it difficult to regulate my volume accuractely enough with the continuous pedal after my ears get tired half way through a gig. This would let me keep the pedal full down as my "rhythym" baseline, and hit the switch for the solos. As the pedal is simply a potentiometer, it should be possible to have a footswitch insert an additional resistor in line (for the lower or "unboosted") level, and bypass it for the full (or "boosted") level. A drop in full output to roughly "85" of the full "99" for the unboosted level would be about right. Can anyone figure the resistor I would need to do this? I was going to play around with it, and I suspect I can figure it out, but why reinvent the wheel if its been tried before? Note I prefer NOT to put the actual audio output of the EPS through a preamp or whatever to change its level, as I think this would be less reliable, and unless I use expensive electronics, would tend to color the sound more than I would like.
