Hi EPS people, In the course of diagnosing problems with my EPS-16+ SCSI controller board, I need to identify the pin-outs of the J3 Aux Expansion connector located inside the 16+ on the main motherboard. Does anyone have such info, fellow hackers? Some pins are fairly easy to discern: 18 Interrupt* 19 DMA Request* 21 Read/Write* 23 Chip Select* 25 Reset* 29 Address line 0. For password, enter your email address. Next: CD pub/eps/ BINARY (this changes file transfer mode to binary, default is usually ASCII otherwise.) GET (repeat ad nauseum or until your disk space runs out.) QUIT Notes: 1) If you leave off the .GZ extension, i.e. just "foobar.gkh" Oak will decompress the file for you in transmission. Alternatively, you can specify the whole thing and use the "gzip -d " program, which I think is in the "incoming" directory to decompress them locally on your pc. 2) Some of the filenames are too long to fit into the PC's 8.3 limitation (just wait for Windows 4! :-)) You may need to rename them to make sense once you've got the file locally. OK, so now you've got the .GKH, whaddya do with it? Well, you need to also download the EPSDISK program using the same steps as above. All you do is run this, use the EPSDISK format command to format the appropriate density disk, and then use C)opy disk, specifying the .GKH file as the source volume and your formatted floppy as the target... Away you go. There are more advanced techniques of arranging samples on disks but I'll leave that discussion to someone else. I just uploaded my stereo drum kit to Oak. It's called "dampkit*", and is now sitting in the "incoming" directory. I didn't break up the samples, so all of the stereo drum samples are in one "instrument" which is about four-megs in size. The idea is that you find some sounds you want then copy them to another instrument to build a kit. I'll be doing this later and uploading them to Oak, but for now some of you may be interested in these. If anything, I'll be the first person to put something in the ASR directory! The drum samples consists of 10 kicks, 12 snares, plus some hats. They were sampled from an Akai XR10 drum machine through internal ASR effects. There's nothing really weird, but there's not that much conventional either. As the name implies, the drum samples have the effects liberally applied. I was going to put together a "dry kit" as well, but I found that I could "simulate" dry-ness by cutting off the reverb trail. EPS users MAY be able to use it if the EPS can handle four megs of memory, or if some nice person breaks the kit down into more managable chunks. I'll be sampling a real drum set with stereo mics in a short while, so if you're looking for a "shitty real-drums in the basement" sound, you're in luck. Have fun! -Mark - -- "Key chuckles. The floppy used to hold information on the number of tracks (Terminology varies; there are 80 tracks on the DD floppy, now you know ) For OS v2.0 it does not. The integer that held this information is zero. The sampler does not seem to mind the track integer beeing zero. (It may not actually need it, and the number can be calculated from other data on the floppy ) Some utilities may use this info for identifying the kind of disk. mine did So I tried some of the PC utilities. epsread/epswrite did not recognize the floppy. epsdisk.exe 1.31b did not recognize the floppy. Then I opened it (PC, that is), took the disk(ette)drive out and installed a SCSI card and a SCSI disk and put everything back in its place again (I think...) Well, after that the 1,44Mb drive has worked perfectly with every other program except EPSDisk. I used to have the same problem with another PC at work. The symptoms are as follows: Directory, Extract and Write (to some extent) work Format gives an error message (13 if I remember correctly) Write gives sometimes an error message (1 or 23 if memory serves) (Too bad I'm at work now, so I can't check the error messages) Well, anyways, could there be a way to connect the controller "ribbons" of the disk drive so that every other piece of soft- ware works just dandy, but not the EPSDisk? Why do I have such a hunch? Well, during the SCSI installation process I did connect the "ribbons" so that there was an offset with the pins. As a result, the drive was recognised and it could read, but not write. And I think I got it right since everything worked after changing the position of the connector. Well, every- thing except EPSDisk. One other thing, I also haven't used EPSDisk since I upgraded from DOS 5 to DOS 6.0 to DOS 6.2. And I have QEMM installed. Any pointers/clues? t. I was just working on this one LAST NIGHT! If you're talking about what I think you are, you're refering to program changes/patch changes/???? changes, which I am told is an incredibly standard MIDI command across sampler and synth platforms. For the EPS, you can send them to load different files from whatever storage device you're using (floppy, SCSI). Also, if I'm not mistaken (someone please verify this for me), you can use patch/program changes to control other things as well. Anyway, for the Cakewalk thing, what I have to do first is record at least one note onto the file I'm using. Then, I look at the event list, and change one of the events that was a note to a "patch change", as cakewalk likes to call it. You need to specify one piece of data with that, and thats which program change number you want to send (on my version of CW, it usually replaces the list of program change numbers with these "standard midi" program change names...so if you have to choose from an array of instrument names, dont worry. Its still sending the patch change number. Anyway, now for the part of this that is relevant to EPS users... The EPS can be on any base channel, but for this example, assume its set to 1. The MIDI IN mode has to be on MULTI (or I'm told that MONO B works too). MIDI PROGRAM CHANGE must be set to ON. Something that I found out last night is that EACH INSTRUMENT BANK YOU MIGHT WANT TO HAVE SOMTHING LOADED TO MUST START WITH SOME SORT OF INSTRUMENT ALREADY LOADED INTO IT. In other words, if nothing has been loaded to a given instrument bank, an attempt to load somthing to it via program/patch changes will fail. Last, you need to put your EPS in LOAD mode for this to work. So heres the convention regarding how to load what file: -Sending PC (program change) 0 will bump you up to the parent directory of the one youre in. -Sending PC (n+1) will load file n...PROVIDED its in the directory youre in. otherwise, it fails. -If the file that you request to load is an instrument file, then it loads into the instrument number that is the same number as the MIDI channel you sent the PC on to do this. That is, PC=4 on channel 3 will load file 4. If this file is an instrument file, it'll load the instrument into instrument bank 3. THIS IS PROVIDED THAT YOUR BASE CHANNEL IS CHANNEL 1 (btw: if the file was a directory, then calling it bumps you up to that directory. If the file is an effects file (for you 16+ users), it just loads it into the effects bank. If its a bank file, it'll try to load the whole bank into the EPS) +****************************************************************************+ = Paul B. You NEED the 4x expander to do serious work. You can still find them, but they're close to $200-and you won't be able to sell the 2X you'll be replacing. Which sampler you buy depends on your needs. Introduction to the mailing list. - ------------------------------------ The EPS/ASR mailing list is for the discussion of the Ensoniq EPS/ASR family of digital sampling keyboards. Members post questions, answers, informal reviews, and other information. The mailing list includes nearly 350 men and women from North America, Europe, and Australia. This list is automatically summarized into a digest which is mailed nightly (11 PM Eastern time in the United States.) If you'd prefer to receive a digest nightly instead of mailing list traffic as it occurs during the day and night, unsubscribe from this list and subscribe to eps-digest instead: 1) Send email to eps-request@oak.oakland.edu. In the body of your message, put the command: unsubscribe 2) Send email to eps-digest-request@oak.oakland.edu. In the body of your message, put the command: subscribe To send a message to the list, please send e-mail to eps@oak.oakland.edu. Please do NOT send subscribe/unsubscribe requests to the eps address: these should all go to eps-request or eps-digest-request address. When you send email to that address, the machine there sends a copy to each individual on the list. If you have problems or questions about using the list, send your query this address: jeff@oakland.edu Thanks for looking after us Jeff! Archives of past discussions are available as compressed text files via anonymous ftp to oak.oakland.edu. The file(s) are in /pub/eps/digests, and were compressed using gnuzip. Feel free to access oak.oakland.edu using Gopher (gopher.acs.oakland.edu, port 70) or WWW (Mosaic/Lynx URL: http://www.acs.oakland.edu). Oak's IP address is 141.210.10.117. - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. Software/Documentation/Sample Archives - ----------------------------------------- This section describes the contents of the archives, a tutorial on how to download files from the archives, and how to get sample data into your sampler. 2.1 Downloading from archives - ----------------------------- Crash course in ftp ftp - file transfer protocol Basically, ftp allows you to transfer files to and from a remote machine. Some machines are set up as anonymous ftp servers. You can 'log in' to these machines even though you do not have an account on them and transfer files to and from their archives. You can navigate through the directories (or folders) much like you do on your local machine. ftp allows for two types of file transfers, text and binary. If you are interested in downloading a text file (like documentation or source code) from an anonymous ftp server, you may download it in either text or binary mode. However, if you want to download a binary file (such as an executable program or binary data, like our .gkh files), you must do it in binary mode or the file will not be useable. Sometimes, the files in the archives are compressed. Certain types of files, like .gkh files, are very large. Not only would they take up a lot of disk space at the archive server if they were uncompressed, but they would take you a lot longer to upload and download. Our archives use gzip compression. So in order to best take advantage of the ftp server, you should get a program which will decompress these files at your local machine. Don't despair, however, if you cannot find one. The ftp server can decompress the files for you. It will just take a bit longer to download. (See the section on compression for more information on this) Note: The following scripts are from the UNIX ftp program. Of course, things will look different if you run an ftp program on Macs or PCs. Here is a brief list of ftp programs and where to get them: Machine Utility Where - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- UNIX platforms ftp /usr/ucb/ftp (at least on my machine) Macintosh Fetch ftp to bitsy.mit.edu /pub/mac/fetch/fetch-2.1.2.hqx (don't you love it -- you need an ftp program to get an ftp program!! :-)) PCs ???? is there one???? - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- OK, let's get started with a typical session. Logging in: Invoke ftp by giving as the first argument the name of the ftp server, in our case, oak.oakland.edu. ........................................................................... - --> ftp oak.oakland.edu Connected to oak.oakland.edu. 220 oak.oakland.edu FTP server (Version wu-2.4(3) Thu Apr 14 15:45:26 EDT 1994) ready. Name (oak.oakland.edu:priebe): ........................................................................... Now what? Do you have an account at oak.oakland.edu? Probably not. So what you want to do is type 'anonymous' at the prompt: ........................................................................... Name (oak.oakland.edu:priebe): anonymous 331 Guest login ok, send your complete e-mail address as password. Password: ........................................................................... Here you type your full e-mail address. In my case, I would type 'priebe@cs.unc.edu', but it is not echoed on the screen (this _is_ a password, right?) So now you are 'in'. You will receive an introductory message which might give you some useful information about the server machine. (Like when you should download, and any special instructions). ........................................................................... 230- 230- Welcome to 230- THE OAK SOFTWARE REPOSITORY 230- A service of Oakland University, Rochester Michigan 230- ........................................................................... This is just the start of the introduction message. I have deleted the rest of it to conserve space. Now you will get the ftp prompt: ........................................................................... ftp> ........................................................................... You can now type in commands to navigate through the directories. Lets go to the eps archives: ........................................................................... ftp> cd pub/eps 250-Please read the file README 250- it was last modified on Sun Apr 24 19:11:02 1994 - 67 days ago 250 CWD command successful. ftp> ........................................................................... To see the contents of the directory, type: ........................................................................... ftp> ls 200 PORT command successful. 150 Opening ASCII mode data connection for file list. README docs ts demos utils samples incoming digests AFA-LARCHIVE sequences os .notar eps.idx 226 Transfer complete. 106 bytes received in 0.016 seconds (6.6 Kbytes/s) ftp> ........................................................................... Let's go into the samples/orchestral directory and get the file eps15.gkh.gz ........................................................................... ftp> cd samples/orchestral 250 CWD command successful. ftp> ls 200 PORT command successful. 150 Opening ASCII mode data connection for file list. eps15.gkh.gz eps15.txt flut2ann.gkh.gz flut2eve.gkh.gz strings.gkh.gz sleighbl.gkh.gz bells.gkh.gz bells.txt oboe+eh.gkh.gz oboe+eh.txt accordn.gkh.gz 226 Transfer complete. 162 bytes received in 0.012 seconds (14 Kbytes/s) ftp> ........................................................................... Now before we get the file, we need to go into binary transfer mode. Type: ........................................................................... ftp> bin 200 Type set to I. ftp> ........................................................................... (To get back to text transfer mode, type 'ascii' at the ftp> prompt.) Now we need to tell the ftp server that we want to get the file. ........................................................................... ftp> get eps15.gkh.gz 200 PORT command successful. 150 Opening BINARY mode data connection for eps15.gkh.gz (389437 bytes). 226 Transfer complete. local: eps15.gkh.gz remote: eps15.gkh.gz 389437 bytes received in 19 seconds (20 Kbytes/s) ftp> ........................................................................... This can take a while. The files are quite large. Be patient. OK, we're done, let's close the connection: ........................................................................... ftp> quit 221 Goodbye. ........................................................................... So now we have the file eps15.gkh.gz. What can we do with it? First, we have to uncompress it. 2.2 Compression/Decompression - ----------------------------- This section is mainly concerned with the decompression of the .gz files, which are the most common compressed files in the archives. To decompress a .gz file, you will need different programs depending on what kind of machine you are working with locally: Machine Utility Where - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- UNIX platforms gzip /usr/local/contrib/moderated/bin/gzip (hopefully) Macintosh MacGzip ftp to rascal.ics.utexas.edu /misc/mac/cps/MacGzip_0.21.cpt.bin (you will also need to get CompactPro to decompress this one -- what a bitch, eh? :-)) IBM PCs ????? ?????? - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Now, if you cannot get one of these programs one way or another, then you can always download the file uncompressed. Simply leave off the .gz in the name. For example, instead of the command 'get eps15.gkh.gz' which was issued in the section above, do this: ........................................................................... ftp> get eps15.gkh 200 PORT command successful. 150 Opening BINARY mode data connection for /bin/gzip. 226 Transfer complete. local: eps15.gkh remote: eps15.gkh 819370 bytes received in 45 seconds (18 Kbytes/s) ftp> ........................................................................... Note that it was substantially slower to download the uncompressed file. 2.3 Getting samples to my Ensoniq sampler - ----------------------------------------- Now you have a disk image on your local machine. In order to play these wonderful samples, you have to write the disk image to an Ensoniq floppy disk. You'll need some more software to do this: Machine Utilities - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- IBM PC epswrite, epsdisk Macintosh EPSm Atari Disk Wizard Amiga Amiga Disk Manager (and this one??) - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- All of these are available in our archives in the /pub/eps/utils directories, except for EPSm, which you may obtain by contacting the author, Terje Finstad, t.g.finstad@fys.uio.no. I believe they all have documentation which will get you through the process of actually writing disk images to Ensoniq floppies. Some are easier to use than others, so you may have to go through a trial and error procedure to learn these tools well, but you can do it! 2.4 FTP site organisation - ------------------------- Our current ftp site is oak.oakland.edu and the subdirectories in this area are as follows: /pub/eps/ | +--incoming/ (Upload new files here.) | +--utils/ (Platform specific utilities.) | | | +--amiga/ (Amiga specific utilities.) | | | +--atari-st/ (Atari-ST specific utilities.) | | | +--mac/ (Macintosh specific utilities.) | | | +--msdos/ (MS-DOS, IBM-PC specific utilities.) | +--digests/ (Archived digests.) | | | +--indexes/ | +--samples/ (Public Domain samples.) | | | +--PD/ | | | +--aiff/ | | | | | +--BreakBeat/ | | | | | +--Kick/ | | | | | +--Numbers/ | | | | | +--SecretAiff/ | | | | | +--Snare/ | | | | | +--misc/ | | | +--demo/ | | | +--lm/ | | | +--misc/ | | | +--vfx/ | +--docs/ (Text files for the EPS/ASR) | | | +--utils/ | | | +--reviews/ | | | +--samples/ | +--system-software/ (Operating Systems.) - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. File Format Information. - --------------------------- Here is a summary of the types of files which you will find in the archives: Extension Contents Type - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- .Z File compressed with 'compress' Binary .gz A gzip'ed file (compressed file) Binary .zip PKZIP file (compressed file) Binary .sit Stuff it file (compressed Mac file) Binary .sea Self-extracting archive (compressed Mac file) Binary .hqx A BinHex'ed file (Mac file) Text .txt Plain text file Text .exe MSDOS executable file Binary .gkh An EPS/EPS16+ disk image (our sample transfer Binary standard) Can be written to Ensoniq floppies .efe An individual EPS/EPS16+/ASR-10 instrument Binary extracted from a .gkh disk image .aiff or Audio Interchange File Format - another Binary .aif sample file format. Can be read into a .gkh Binary file and written to Ensoniq floppies .ps PostScript file (instructions for printing Text formatted text and/or graphics) - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Some of the files on the ftp site are stored in standard formats, this brief explanation will try to clear up the differences between these different formats. What is an .aiff file? It is an AIFF file. The capitals stands for Audio Interchange File Format. It can contain audio data such as samples, a complete stereo soundtrack or quadraphonic sound. This format is widely used on Apple and Amiga machines. All decent sample editors on the Mac can read this format as can many editors for the PC. The File format allows one sound chunk only. It does contain information such as samplerate and can optionally hold loop points, tuning and rootkey information etc.. Can one use .aiff files on the eps sampler? Yes, as individual samples. Most sample editors read AIFF files, and one can transfer the samples to the sampler. There are also utilities for the Mac and the PC that allow you to write these to Ensoniq floppies: Mac - EPSm. PC - aif2efe+EPSDisk What is a .gkh file? Lets rephrase, what are the .gkh files that are located at oak.oakland.edu? These are files containing all the data of an Ensoniq DD floppy. The exact image of the floppy is wrapped into this format. The file also contains information such as who made the samples on the floppy or description of the samples. How can my sampler use these .gkh files? There are utilities for MAC, PC and Atari to transfer the contents of the gkh file to Ensoniq floppies. Atari - Disk Wizard PC - epsread/write.exe Mac - EPSm - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4. EPS/ASR effects disks. - ------------------------- Waveboy industries have released a whole bunch of new FX (yes brand new!) for the EPS 16 Plus & ASR-10. They load straight into the EPS FX chip (ESP chip) from diskette. The following information is taken from Waveboy's 'spec sheet', thanks Bill. 5.1 PARALLEL EFFECTS DISK - ------------------------- For the Ensoniq ASR-10 and EPS 16 PLUS. "Very rarely does a product come along that is useful, elegant, fun, innovative, and (amazingly enough) inexpensive but Waveboy's Parallel Effects Disk (PED) succeeds on just about any criteria used to evaluate a product. ...It's like having your EPS retrofitted with a 'DP/4 Junior.'" Craig Anderton, Transoniq Hacker, April 1992. This disk contains 16 algorithms which load into an EPS or ASR and redefine what the signal processing chip can do. Each algorithm contains four parallel sub-effects. Each sub-effect can process a different (mono) input with a different effect. So it's suddenly possible to (for example) use a long reverb on a snare, a short reverb on the high-hat, a flanger on the bass and a chorus/delay on the electric piano all at the same time. And each of the four effects has a stereo output with adjustable pan and level. The PARALLEL EFFECTS DISK version 1.2 now works with the Ensoniq ASR-10 as well as the Ensoniq EPS-16 PLUS. While the ASR-10 comes with a many effects, most of them are single effects or serial effects. The parallel effects on this disk give the ASR more multi-timbral power. Price: Parallel Effects Disk: $39.95 5.2 AUDIO IN EFFECTS DISK - ------------------------- For the Ensoniq EPS-16 PLUS. What Are Audio-In Effects? Audio-in effects let you send external audio signals into the effects processor that's built into the Ensoniq EPS-16 PLUS. A guitar, mic, or line level signal, when plugged into the audio-in jack, is routed to BUS1 of the effects processor. A Mic/Line switch and level control adjusts the gain of the input. But then I can't use the keyboard? No, internal sounds can still play too, using BUS2 or BUS3. You may want to use the unique keyboard-controlled pitch-shifter to change your voice into a vocal quartet in real-time. Or if you're the type who likes to use rhythm loops from records, you will definitely be using the Time-Dicer to change the pitch of a track without changing its tempo. Examples on how to use the effects are included on the disk. Price: Audio-In Disk is $39.95 (EPS 16 PLUS only) 5.3 RESONANT FILTER DISK - ------------------------ For the Ensoniq ASR-10 and EPS 16 PLUS. The REZ FILTER algorithm is a striking re-creation of an analog synthesizer, the classic Minimoog. A four-pole low-pass resonant filter is coupled to a lightning- fast ADSR envelope generator. The filter's resonance control (also known as emphasis, bandwidth, or Q) gives it that distinctive analog sound by creating a sharp peak in the frequency response. This peak can be swept up or down on each note or controlled by the keyboard or velocity or any modulation source. It does things you can't do by sampling an analog synth. But wait... there's more: this disk includes another algorithm that does frequency modulation (FM.) There's something about pure FM synthesis that samples just can't capture. It's the dynamic interaction of a performer, making every note a little different from the last. The WAVeBOY FM+FX algorithm uses software inside the effects processor to synthesize one voice of live frequency modulation. The RESONANT FILTER disk works with both the Ensoniq EPS-16 PLUS and the Ensoniq ASR-10. The price is $39.95 direct from WAVeBOY Industries, including shipping. 5.4 THE VODER - ------------- The Voder is a keyboard-controlled vocoder and morphing filter bank for the EPS-16 PLUS and the ASR-10. WHAT CAN YOU DO WITH IT? Teach your sampler to talk; synthesize and sequence a vocal chorus singing the words to your song! Get those classic vocoder sounds - talking wind, talking bass, talking anything; sequence elaborate EQ changes that happen in sync to the music; all this is possible using the Voder. WHAT IS IT? The Voder effect is a bank of programmable filters that loads into the built-in effects processor of an EPS-16 PLUS or an ASR-10. The filters are multi-band parametric equalizers (EQs) that can be modulated in interesting ways - most notably, they can make a sound talk or sing words! Like a classic vocoder, the Voder imposes the moving resonance of speech onto any input sound. But while the conventional vocoder uses a live vocal input to derive the control information, the Voder uses the music keyboard or MIDI. EPS and Midi programming. - ---------------------------- For those of you struggling with the EPS sysex and MIDI while trying to write your own code there is a whole bunch of EPS sysex routines written in turbo-C avaliable for anonymous ftp... AT : oak.oakland.edu IN : /pub/eps/docs FILE: epslib_2.0.tar.Z SIZE: 154704 This is a portion of the readme file in the archive: This is version 2 of my long-promised EPS System Exclusive routine library. The routines contained in this distribution implement a large subset of the routines found in Ensoniq's "EPS Performance Sampler External Command Specification" and should be useful to anyone writing code to control the EPS via MIDI. These routines were written in Turbo C, for the IBM PC and MPU-401, which explains some of the identifiers. However, it should be simple enough to port them to any other platform. All of the MPU-specific routines are defined in 'mpu.c' and 'mpu.h'. There is some IBM-specific stuff in 'eps.c' and 'eps.h', too. These four files should be the only ones you need to modify. I've also included 'epsl.lib', a Turbo C large model library, containing all of this stuff, for those who can use it. - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8. Hard Disk Drives - ------------------- In the Transoniq Hacker, there used to be a list. They stopped printing it, because there are so many HD out there, and generally most of them work with the ASR/16-Plus. The Original EPS is a problem instrument when it comes to SCSI. The interface was picky, and had no internal termination, which really causes problems, as most connection errors are termination based anyway. OEX - Output Expander - ------------------------ The output expander for the EPS is not just a pin-for-pin audio plug. It has complex circuitry with op-amps and multiplexing so you can't just make your own cable. Here are some details. 9.1 EPS Classic - --------------- This information is not too useful to anyone without a basic experience in the design of simple operational-amplifier chip-based circuits. "Inside The EPS"- that happens to be the title of an article by Dick Lord in issue #39 of the Transonic Hacker, way back in Sept. 1988. Here, the signals inside the EPS which drive the OEX are explained as follows (a short excerpt): "The 8-output expander uses these output selection lines to route the differential signals at pin 5 and pin 9 of J16 to one of the eight outputs. Since only three pins are available for selection, outsel0 and outsel3 are combined by an op-amp and fed to pin 2 of the connector. When pin 2 is non-negative, it can control bit 0 of the external output selector. Pin 1 supplies a clock to gate each output sample. In the Ensoniq expander the differential signals probably are not re-combined immediately, but pass through a differential pair of output selectors to minimize switching noise. Power for the output expander circuitry is available from the positive and negative 12V supplies on pins 3 and 4." J16 OUTPUT EXPANSION 5 4 3 2 1 9 8 7 6 1 -> OUTCLK 2 -> OUTSEL0/3 3 -> +12 4 -> - 12 5 -> Differential output - 6 -> OUTSEL2 7 -> OUTSEL1 8 -> GND 9 -> Differential output + (OUTSEL0/3 is described in a graph, but since I can't do graphics here I'll just transcribe it into a table:) J16-2 (pin 2 -> OUTSEL0/3) Level OUTSEL3 OUTSEL0 - ----- ----- ----- +5V 1 1 +0V 1 0 - -2V 0 1 - -7V 0 0 EXTRA - ----- I have a few things to add to Dick Lord's notes, but I haven't actually looked inside an OEX. Siliconix makes a few analog multiplexer chips, and they have one which fits the bill for the OEX exactly. The DG507A is a Differential 8-Channel Multiplexer. Here is how it would connect to the DB-9 on the back of the EPS (J16 in the article): pin 1 (V+) = J16-3 pin 2 (Db) = J16-9 pins 4 - 11 are + outputs pin 12 (GND)= J16-8 pin 15 (A2) = J16-6 pin 16 (A1) = J16-7 pin 17 (A0) = "OUTSEL0" from J16-2 through a dc-shifting op-amp circuit pin 18 (EN) = J16-1 AND ("/OUTSEL3" from J16-2 thru op-amp comparator) pins 19 - 26 are - outputs pin 27 (V-) = J16-4 pin 28 (Da) = J16-5 OTHER NECESSARY CIRCUITRY - ------------------------- You would probably want to buffer the signals instead of taking a chance on blowing out the DG507 or the EPS. Of course, the more difficult circuit is the op-amp comparator and the 8 sample-and-hold op-amps to store the individual channels as they are clocked by the EPS. The op-amp comparator would need to generate OUTSEL3 by generating 5V whenever OUTSEL0/3 is greater than -1V and generating 0V whenever OUTSEL0/3 is less than -1V. Another section should use an op-amp to generate OUTSEL0 by passing through OUTSEL0/3 when the comparator says OUTSEL3 is logic 1, but a positive dc offset of 7V should be added to OUTSEL0/3 to generate OUTSEL0 whenever the comparator has OUTSEL3 as logic 0. Not too tricky to design this, but I don't have a working/proven circuit to share. The 8 sample-and-hold op-amps should be connected to combine the respective differential outputs (e.g. S1a, pin 19, would connect to the inverting input, and S1b, pin 11, to the non-inverting input - the output of this would be Solo 1). This circuit would be repeated eight times to combine each demultiplexed differential output, this design cancels out any switching noise generated by the DG507 during demultiplexing (thanks, Ensoniq!). Also, it would be just as easy (sure :-) to do a 16-channel output expander. In this case the 8 pre-panned settings would be available individually as monophonic outputs (hopefully without affecting the quality of the internal stereo outputs). A second DG507 would be wired like the first, except that its pin 18 (EN) would be J16-1 AND OUTSEL3 (instead of the inverted /OUTSEL3). - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10. General Questions. - --------------------- Q. I bought a used EPS classic, and I don't know what operating system version I have, how do I find that out? What is the latest version, and how do I get it?" A. Press COMMAND ENV1, and left-arrow over until you get to the software information page. Press ENYER/YES andyou'll get various tidbits. Don't monkey with the other stuff (though "examine analog inputs" and "calibrate keyboard" are pretty safe). The latest RAM OS version is 2.49, ROM Version 2.40 (Important if you plan on adding a hard drive later). - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12. I do a lot of live performances and have my entire setup run through Miditemp (patchbay/controller asf.). Anyway, when we start playing a new song I just move to the right 'preset' on my miditemp and suddendly my sq plays brass on the eps, my dx7 screams out the sq-organ asf. I can also load files into the eps by sending program changes, but there's one thing I haven't figured out yet: when I play miami brass on the eps I want a reverb, when I play distortion guitar I want a distortion effect. But the way I go about it now is that my Miditemp routes all of the midi info (like: channel 5 on input 4 plays on channel 8 on output 3, for keys c3-d5), but I still have to set the correct effect MANUALLY. So my question is: can I somehow send 'effect changes' to the eps (and sq2 for that matter), so the correct effect is set? Thanks a lot for your help, it'll save me a lot of trouble during gigs. I own a TS10 now, was considering an AKAI S01, or EPS.. Need 20-30 seconds of recording at 16bit.. I know the EPS doesn't support 16bit recording, so how much are EPS/16's going for (rackmount) any other ideas? I have been using a Turtle Beach Monterey Sound Card with alot of success! It's a great sounding 16 bit card that is very quiet. I use Samplevision & Wave SE to edit my samples. Monterey comes with Samplestore which allows you to upload samples into it's own ram (you have to buy the ram) and a patch editor is forthcoming which will allow you to edit envelopes and the like. It also has a decent GM board that comes with it. Rio (the GM sound module) is not quite as nice as a Sound Canvas but with SampleStore, you can upload your own samples. Lastly, if I want to get the sounds I make into my TS for processing, I use SoundVert (which converts waves to a format that the TS can read). This option is alot cheaper then getting a S01 or 13bit EPS and will also allow you to digitally record your music. The sound quality is excellent. The Monterey costs just $349. This assumes of course that you are using a PC . I eagerly await your > replys. > > Thanks, > Paul Noble > I was using a shareware sequencer and wanted to figure this out also. I set the PC sequencer to record mode and selected a sound from a bank, played a note, and stopped the sequencer. The sequencer recorded my button pushes so I was able see what midi signals the TS sent for bank select. I was able to modify the tracks on the PC to send the same commands and voila! To do a bank select, have the sequencer send a Controller Change 10 with the bank # on the desired channel For example to select bank 3 on channel 1, Send: CtrlChang 10, Channel 1, data 3 Then send the program change to select the voice within the bank. There is a chart of all the sounds either in the Manual or the Essentials Sound Manual that has 4 tables, each with about 64 sounds. Each of these tables represents a bank and the entry within the table is the voice within the bank. The first entry is 00, next reading across is 01, etc. I have the TS in the tracks display (with track 1 set to receive channel 1) so I can see what voice is selected as I send the command from the PC sequencer. You also should have the TS set to receive in Omni Mode (I think) - That is in one of the menus on the system page. The manual has a note about it. I haven't done it in a while but if you need more detail, email me and I will try it out and write down the steps. General Midi upgrade will be O.K. for playing canned .mid files, but it won't help any with this since there are far more TS sounds then GM sounds. For the first cycle, though, I'd prefer to send the whole FAQ. Judging by the number of questions I get via email (which pretty much eats up the time I have to admin the archive ) that are answered very well by the FAQ, it's obvious that we need to get the full FAQ as it is enhanced and updated out to everyone. Instructions on how to get the FAQ are sent to new subscribers, and I'll change the initial message to include the entire FAQ once I receive the updated copy from Steve. I pay for my home email connection (a permanent Internet link) so I understand the concern for minimizing costs. For the August cycle, I'm willing to switch over to emailing a 10 line message or so that merely demonstrates how to get the FAQ from the archive mail server. Thanks for the suggestion! This can probably be done in the event view fairly easily. The patch selects only let you change sounds within the current BankSet, with or without the effect changing as well (see the TS manual for the translation table...). I eagerly await your |> replys. | | | Well, gee whiz! I was just working on this one LAST NIGHT! | If you're talking about what I think you are, you're refering to | program changes/patch changes/???? changes, which I am told is | an incredibly standard MIDI command across sampler and synth | platforms. For the EPS, you can send them to load different | files from whatever storage device you're using (floppy, SCSI). | Also, if I'm not mistaken (someone please verify this for me), | you can use patch/program changes to control other things as | well. | | Anyway, for the Cakewalk thing, what I have to do first is | record at least one note onto the file I'm using. Then, | I look at the event list, and change one of the events that | was a note to a "patch change", as cakewalk likes to call it. | You need to specify one piece of data with that, and thats which | program change number you want to send (on my version of CW, | it usually replaces the list of program change numbers with these | "standard midi" program change names...so if you have to choose | from an array of instrument names, dont worry. Its still sending | the patch change number. | | Anyway, now for the part of this that is relevant to EPS users... | The EPS can be on any base channel, but for this example, assume | its set to 1. The MIDI IN mode has to be on MULTI (or I'm told | that MONO B works too). MIDI PROGRAM CHANGE must be set to ON. | Something that I found out last night is that EACH INSTRUMENT BANK | YOU MIGHT WANT TO HAVE SOMTHING LOADED TO MUST START WITH SOME SORT | OF INSTRUMENT ALREADY LOADED INTO IT. In other words, if nothing | has been loaded to a given instrument bank, an attempt to load | somthing to it via program/patch changes will fail. Last, you need | to put your EPS in LOAD mode for this to work. | | So heres the convention regarding how to load what file: | | -Sending PC (program change) 0 will bump you up to | the parent directory of the one youre in. | -Sending PC (n+1) will load file n...PROVIDED its in the | directory youre in. otherwise, it fails. | -If the file that you request to load is an instrument | file, then it loads into the instrument number that is | the same number as the MIDI channel you sent the PC on | to do this. That is, PC=4 on channel 3 will load file | 4. If this file is an instrument file, it'll load the | instrument into instrument bank 3. | THIS IS PROVIDED THAT YOUR BASE CHANNEL IS CHANNEL 1 | (btw: if the file was a directory, then calling it bumps | you up to that directory. If the file is an effects file | (for you 16+ users), it just loads it into the effects | bank. If its a bank file, it'll try to load the whole bank | into the EPS) | |+************************************************************************** **+ |= Paul B. No luck yet, though. I checked EPSDIR and it works like a charm, no problem. And the error message number I keep getting from EPSDISK is (128). Could anyone tell me at least what that error number is trying to tell me?? It seems that my floppy disk drive is having problems only when it comes to writing. And even then it sometimes succeeds, sometimes not. I just cannot believe that there could be that sort of a physical malfunction in the drive that doesn't affect the normal use at all but causes one program to fail. How can the drive format, read and write normal MS-DOS floppies like nothing but still refuses to co- operate with the EPSDISK? A ghost in my machine, too? Or not a 100% IBM compatible drive/controller/...? Could there be some memory problem? Does EPSDISK require some big chunk of memory to operate (which I may not have due to the SCSI controller) or maybe it wants to use a certain part of the memory which for some reason isn't available? Gawd, I'm ashamed of being so ignorant on these things. But then again, I'm a software guy and "this is clearly a hardware problem" ;-) Well, anyhow, I'm still listening t. But the odd thing was, it wasn't any of the notes I played, but one of those notes an octave higher. It stayed on until I turned the ASR off, or deleted the instrument. Too, it came on as loud as possible, and the master volume fader didn't seem to affect it. Same thing happened after I rebooted the instrument, and even when I loaded a copy of the instrument from another floppy. It even happened when I triggered the sound from another keyboard via MIDI. Here's the scoop on SCSI interfaces for the Original EPS: Sound Logic sells PS System 4x memory and SCSI kits for $197 and $97 respectively. PS SCSI's only work with PS memory expanders. Maartist's SCSI's are extinct, but if you have a Maartist's memory expander, you can put an Ensoniq SP-2 (with termination) SCSI board on with slight modification. Unfortunately, you have to buy this through an Ensoniq repair station, whom which you have to convince to do the mod. Sound Logic's phone number is 800-753-6558 (PDT). If you have an Ensoniq memory expander, get the Ensoniq SP-2 SCSI - bargain tough with your Ensoniq dealer, or call Thoroughbred Music in Tampa (800-800-4654) - they give good deals. Naturally, I played around with this for a while, and found out that I could go forwards _or backwards_ through the samples by moving the pitch wheel. The idea is that you would like to pretend that the signal is continuous not discrete so that you can find a "perfect" loop point. The standard way to pretend that a signal is continuous is to simply perform linear interpolation between samples. I've seen a mathematical proof which demonstrates that you don't introduce much more harmonic distortion into a signal by using linear interpolation than you would by using some kind of polynomial or non-linear interpolation. This idea also comes up in digital delay - you want a delay of *exactly* 0.765 seconds (to match your tempo of X bpm), which corresponds to a delay of 7777.77538774 (or whatever) samples. If you round down, the delay will be too short, and if you round up, it will be too long, so you use the same interpolation trick. - -- Thomas Conway conway@cs.mu.oz.au Decidability is like a balloon: one little hole and it vanishes. ------------------------------ From: s9400015@minyos.xx.rmit.EDU.AU (David Haberfeld) Date: Thu, 7 Jul 94 23:34:21 EST Subject: Re: Real piano ------------------------------ From: schickda@ssd.comm.mot.com (David Schick) Date: Thu, 7 Jul 94 08:45:10 CDT Subject: Re: The forgotten DP/4 Hey, I have one too. I've done a lot of programming with it, and I like the extensive possibilities and control available. I'm not too impressed with the standard 1U pitch shifter, however - when used on guitar, it seems to only work smoothly on certain notes, and I've never been able to get around this. Somewhat related ... could someone clear this up? Is this list supposed to be EPS/ASR only, or Ensoniq products in general? I've seen the traffic on this list rise quite a bit from the days when there were less than 100 members of the list, and I'm wondering if anyone that's paying for the service considers the non-EPS/ASR traffic a burden (I'm not paying for Internet access myself). I wouldn't mind having a forum to discuss DP/4 topics, but I'm wondering if it is appropriate on this list. I read in the FAQ about a Macintosh utility that would read and write EPS formatted diskettes called "EPSm". The FAQ stated that it would be available in the oak archives, but I can't find it anywhere. Does anyone have a copy of this? (I am assuming that its shareware).
