I'm doing studio work at the moment and I used an EPS for about 6 songs >and now am using an ASR and the mixes with the ASR sound a little dark. Quick correction: the Original EPS only went to 127. I feel what Ensoniq said is wrong and it is a more open filter - compatibility was important to Ensoniq. It's difficult to tell, because when comparing keyboards, it's kind of apples and oranges because the output stages and inherent detail of the sound is different. And with each new keyboard (16-Plus, ASR), we've noticed that the upward compatibility is all but assured, except for the response of the envelopes. The 16-Plus and ASR respond more quickly; in other words, a 2 on the first attack time is faster than a 2 on a previous version keyboard. Seems that they reaise they effiency of the DOC custom chip to take more advantage of the speed of the 68000 processor chip. I'm surprised that it would go darker. If anything, my ears noticed that each new keyboard tend to sound sharper and brighter, due to new D?A stages. So I don't think Ensoniq is correct in their response, even though they are the experts, but I'm surprised and the darkness... maybe a different piano would do you - the Steinway isn't so hot anyway. BTW, and this is for everyone, let's speculate on what's the next Ensoniq sampler. Will they finally dump the 68000 and go for a faster 680x0? Is Pentium in the future for samplers? For Ensoniq? Will they have to dump compatibility? Will we see universal format reading? These questions and more on.... the .OAK zone... What I would like to do is sequence songs on my PC and then save >them onto the EPS disk for gigs. Have I missed something or is it just >not possible? The trick is to set the MIDI IN mode to POLY. Nowadays, the 16-Plus and ASR can record multiple MIDI channels simultaneously, but not then. When it's in POLY, the EPS responds only to the Base Channel. You have to do these transfers one channel at a time. Set the CLOCK=MIDI CLOCKS, PLAY then RECORD, start your external sequencer, and you're on your way. EFE is a format to work with Giebler's Ensoniq Disk Manager and stands for Ensoniq File (format for the) EPS. If they are structured properly -- and I have come across some that don't -- EFE files will work with Michael Chen's EPS Disk. You would only need to manipulate them if you have an instrument that reads Ensoniq sampling disks. While speaking about EFE files...Someone mentioned putting sequences and other data in an EFE file. This is wrong. EFE & EFA files should only contain Sampling Data. Off the top of my head I can't remember what the Giebler designation for EPS/ASR sequences is. If Gary doesn't respond, I'll post it later this weekend. Good Sampling!!! Sorry I don't have it in another format. I tried to convert it to RTF format, but it lost something in the translation. Hopefully enough people will be able to use the Word format. It contains: All Direct-Dial numbers, arranged by function Envelope level values to amplitude in decibels table Envelope time values to time in seconds table Modulation Sources list Recognized External Controllers and their MIDI numbers Floppy disk format and storage capacity information Also, on an optional third page, there is a listing of all Direct-Dial numbers in alphabetical order by their page titles. I laugh. Each system requires its users to master a set of archane chants, spells, prayers, and cusswords. Windows rates HIGH in this context, as I can confirm from supporting users on 3 of the 4. ( both the acoustic one and the sampled ) Thanks a lot for the upload!! I also had fun making sax quartets with the tenor sax in that file. There are also alot of other samples in these files which might interest others. You see the file name *-asr. It contain ASR-10 samples to be used in the TS demo. Some files also contain a demo to run on the ASR-10. So if you have an ASR-10 and a PC you can of coarse make HD floppies from the files with the program EDE. ( That's what "it" says, I'm only referring ) That does not apply to me. If we have no PC, or if we have an EPS or EPS16+ we are out of luck with these samples. Those samplers don't read HD floppies. Also several files are so large they would not fit on a DD floppy. So a made a simple thing for the Mac: ASR Drop. You take one of these ASR image like things - the .EDA files, and drop it onto ASR Drop. It will then extract the individual files from that .EDA file. If the file becomes too large to fit on a DD floppy it will automatically split it up so you can load the instrument over several floppies. If any think that is useful, just let me know. He did upload a demo version onto compuserve, which I have a copy of. He did mention somewhere (my problem is I can't find where - - it was somewhere in the Hacker) that he'll give away the program now. He was selling it for $79.95. Do any of you have a copy? It would be great to contact Chip and see if he'll let the program go so it could be upgraded for the ASR-10. That's what my idea with EPS-SENSE is on the PC side of the coin. Csound is a language developed (I believe) at MIT for defining and playing algorithmically defined instruments. To create a Csound piece, you write two files: an orchestra file (xxx.orc) that defines how the instruments are to create sound. These instruments are defined in terms of connecting different "modules" together (like oscillator modules, filter modules, random freq. modules, as well as signal multipliers, adders, etc). The instruments are then used in the second file, the orchestra file (xxx.orc), which specify the instrument to be played, when they should be played, and the arguments going into that specific instrument. The music research world is the primary supporter of Csound, and several capabilities have been developed over the years that have expanded the sonic possibilities of Csound, such as phase vocoding. Its really great for learning about what it takes to make those bitchin sounds on your synths, as well as for really screwing around with your soundfiles. +****************************************************************************+ = Paul B. I've grabbed messages in transit to the mail servers and found that this occurs before we get our grubby hands on them, so I have to ask that everyone do the following to prevent problems: When you send a message to the mailing list (and this might be a good idea for any mailing list, not just eps@oak.oakland.edu) add an extra blank line at the top of your message. It's easiest just to get in the habit of pressing the Return/Enter key right before you begin typing the text of your message. But, the longer term solution here will be to modify the mail processor to deal with this problem for us instead of making you go through this effort, but for now, adding an extra blank line would be appreciated by us all. Most of the stuff is in the O.S. Ver. 2 manual, but there were some details that I had to work out to avoid ERROR 057-REBOOT? and ERROR 144-REBOOT? and ERROR-129-REBOOT? messages. MY SETUP: ASR-10 rackmount, Korg O1/W, Cakewalk for DOS on an XT-compatible (8086!), with a PC MIDI card. MIDI SYNC: The manual says that AudioTracks cannot be synced to an external sequencer when DiskTracks are used, and an error message will appear if you try to set the clock to MIDI. I also had a lot of reboot errors when I tried to sync RamTracks to Cakewalk, so in general, I think the ASR-10 clock needs to be INTERNAL. CABLES: I connect the ASR-10 OUT to my PC interface IN, PC interface OUT to O1/W IN, and O1/W THRU to ASR-10 IN. This means that I don't need a MIDI patch bay, but I have to switch the cable that goes to the PC interface IN to come out of my O1/W OUT when I'm sequencing on Cakewalk. SOFT THRU: During RamTrack recording, I turn off Cakewalk's soft thru mode, otherwise my O1/W sometimes receives MIDI from the ASR-10. For some reason, the program on the base channel of my combination was changing. Turning off the soft thru fixed that. Also, the local control on the O1/W can be turned back on to hear the O1/W instruments, but none of the ASR-10 instruments can be played on the O1/W keyboard. SPP: Assuming that the ASR-10 clock is internal, and Cakewalk is in a Chase Lock to sync, whenever the Auto-Locate (GO-TO) function is used on the ASR-10, it sends out a Song Position Pointer (SPP), and Cakewalk always receives SPP (as far as I know you can't disable it). The problem here is that I can't use several sequences on the ASR-10 sequencer, because if I am trying to record on the second sequence, and I hit PLAY, then Cakewalk goes to the beginning of the entire song, instead of the beginning of the verse or wherever the sequence starts. Even with Auto-Shuttle on Cakewalk, this happens. I also can't just send a CONTINUE, because I need to use the GO-TO function to get to the right place before I start. There is probably some way to do all this, but I found that the easiest remedy was to only use one sequence on the ASR-10. I start by recording one measure of RamTracks on SEQUENCE 01. Then I erase all audiosamples, and I change sequencer length to add bars to the total length of my Cakewalk song. Then I just play the sequence and hit record at the appropriate place to insert an audiosample. Note the sequence itself only takes up a few blocks, regardless of how many bars it is, since no MIDI data is stored, just audiosamples. CLOCKS: I noticed that the internal clocks on Cakewalk and the ASR-10 are very different. Specifically, on this last project, a Cakewalk tempo of 123 corresponded to an ASR-10 tempo of 127. I think the ASR-10 tempo is supposed to be realtime bpm (is this right?), and I know the Cakewalk tempo is not realtime, but it is only slightly off from the SMPTE time (is SMPTE time real time?). BPM: The only disadvantage I found with syncing Cakewalk to the ASR-10 is that the bpm resolution on Cakewalk is +/- 0.01 bpm, while the ASR-10 bpm resolution is +/- 1 bpm. This can cause slight problems because I use a lot of drum loops. If the actual tempo of the drum loop differs from the ASR-10 tempo by 1 bpm, then over one measure, the drum loop will be ahead or behind the sequence tempo by 240 / ( BPM * (BPM +/- 1) ) where BPM is the tempo of the sequence on the ASR-10. So if the sequence is at 120 bpm, and the drum loop is at 119 bpm, then the drum loop will lag the sequence by 0.0168 seconds per measure, or about 1/60 of a second. This is negligible as long as the drum loop is retriggered often enough, but for some of my older stuff, I had a drum loop triggered once every 8 or even 12 measures, which would mean that by the end of the 12 measures, the loop would be off by about 1/5 of a second. 2-TO-2 BOUNCE-DOWN: There is no way to play the two AudioTracks and input another two tracks and bounce down these four to the two AudioTracks. As far as I can tell, you can only bounce down 2-to-2 when you are just adding another effect. This means that to get three tracks, ie, lead vocals, bkgd vocals, and guitar, you have to record all of them in mono, and bounce 2-to-1 and then add the third on the empty AudioTrack. MISC: I set the following parameters: SEQ COUNTOFF = OFF, CLOCK = INTERNAL, CLICK = OFF. The sequence countoff ends up shifting the RamTracks relative to the Cakewalk sequence. SUMMARY: In general, DiskTracks is definitely something I will be getting into. The disadvantages are that the bpm resolution is coarse, and that true stereo digital multitrack is not available, but for the price of a hard drive, the system is well worth the investment. The digital quality makes a significant difference in the master, and I also no longer need any form of SMPTE or sync. ------------------------------ From: Z_MCDANIELCM@CCSVAX.SFASU.EDU Date: Mon, 6 Jun 1994 14:12:56 -0500 (CDT) Subject: Re: ASR-10R Prices long taime ago i checked into fulboard versions... got aote of 2000.00 $US.... wnat to say it was from sweetwater, but they don't carry ensoniq, so it must have been caruso.... but if you want my advice, get it somewhere else... i would get one thing i ordered, and have to call back and tell them to ship the other things.... several times over and over... it got real old and they made it abundantly clear that theydidn't give a shit about me or my two grand! keep looking around and calling around, you'll probably find one cheaper... there's usually an add in the back of keyboard... for 'the keyboard network'- a friend got a full turbo 16+ woth anvil pretty cheap and in great shape... no hassles... it's just this guy that hooks folks up with each other... i think he makes money buying and reselling... but we got the impression that most of the stuff he resells, he's been playing on for a year or two... called keyboard, as the price was fishy, and they said he'd been advertising for years, no complaints... so we went with him... had it in texas from california in four or so days... hope that helps you out some... later... cody 'cyborg - cybernetic organism' ------------------------------ From: "Mr. T" Date: Mon, 06 Jun 1994 13:47:33 -0300 Subject: Question... It was a very simple process. Just pull the back plate off and replace the ROMs. The kit comes with instructions of how to do it. BTW, although the waves in 2.0 are the same, the revoicings for the patches are much better. Its deffinaltly worth the trouble to get the upgrade. - -Paul Noble ------------------------------ From: "Winer, Greg" Date: Tue, 07 Jun 94 09:16:00 EDT Subject: ASR-10 SIMM Question Is there a "special" way that one needs to configure the RAM of an ASR10? I was at the Durham, NC Museum of Life and Science to check out their exhibit, "What Makes Music", a hands-on exploration of the science of sound. Pretty basic stuff, but I thought it might be cool to check out what they had, and also educate my girlfriend as to what the hell I'm up to when I lock myself in my studio for hours on end. Anyway, here comes the part relevant to this list -- All the keyboards there (about 4 or 5) were Ensoniqs! They had about 3 EPSs and a couple VFXs (I think). They were hooked up to different devices like an oscilloscope, a standing wave tube, and an effects unit (I can't even remember the make -- how embarassing!). Pretty interesting to see the waves coming out of the boards. Also, what I thought was really encouraging is the fact that they were still functioning fine despite the beating they were taking from thousands of little kids banging away on them. So for all the complaints about software bugs, at least this vouches for the physical reliability of Ensoniq's boards. Well, just thought I'd tell you about this interesting experience. I don't think that I've ever seen any postings on the list from anyone in this area, but if there's anybody in the area, I'd recommend that you check this exhibit out. Pretty fun to watch a vibrating piano string with a strobe light and play around with their giant, walk-on keyboard. - -Jason =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Jason Priebe Department of Computer Science "If you ask no questions, then University of North Carolina beware of lies" priebe@cs.unc.edu -MBM http://www.cs.unc.edu/~priebe =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- ------------------------------ From: Marcus Featherston Date: Tue, 7 Jun 94 09:56:47 CDT Subject: Volume Pot I have been having problems with the volume pot on my EPS. If you could let me know whether any one at your site would be interested in helping me, or could recommend anyone anywhere else I should try, please let me know. Amit, >>Tim, why do you need to format a scsi drive? you can't save any samples to it. Says who? Nothing is impossible; it just usually takes work. Knowing what I know, I bet I could format/read/write an Ensoniq SCSI drive on a PC. I simply wanted to know if it had been done. Good Sampling!!! Has anyone had an opportunity to hear Ensoniq's new demo for the ASR? It's sort of a 70's soul rip-off, complete with authentic record static sample (no kidding) sampled lead and backing vocals, and some great key and drum samples. The whole thing fits on one floppy and 2MB of RAM, and sounds INCREDIBLE! It's very "hooky"...I've been humming it all week. If you have a chance, check it out at your dealer, if only because it's just so neat!! Those of you who know me, know I'm not always this "gee-whiz", but I honesly have to say that it's the best demo I've _ever_ heard on a keyboard. My hat is truly off to whoever did this one! =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= "Debbie's! Great! The volume of the keyboard seemed to come and go, sometimes fading out completely. I took the keyboard apart, and found out that the volume pot did not give the same resistance range as the pot used for data entry. I took it out, carefully cleaned it, and everything seemed normal." This may not be much help, but did you try "EXAMINE ANALOG INPUTS" on the "hidden" page? It may give you a little data as to what the problem is. At the very least, you can look at the screen and say "Yep, it's broken allright". On a related note, I once had to have my data slider replaced 'cause I jammed my finger on it once too many. It cost about $170 incl. labor to fix. ------------------------------ From: "Winer, Greg" Date: Thu, 09 Jun 94 09:17:00 EDT Subject: Note sliding on the ASR-10? "I have seen other keyboards with a "note-sliding" feature, that is going from one note to the other will slide between the notes automatically. I'm not sure, but I think it was called "portamento" on the other keyboard." Yes, the technical term for it is "portamento". On the EPS, it's called "GLIDE" and "GLIDE TIME"...I'm not sure if they changed anything on the ASR, though. Anyway, you may remember that I mentioned a cool new ASR demo I heard at my dealer the other day (the classic funk song w. the vocals...) - anyway, one of the insturments was a VERY cool lead synth sound that had the BEST portamento I've heard on a sampler - It worked quite well, and played differently than I've been able to emulate on my EPS. My point is that Ensoniq must have changed something or added a new type of mode (On the EPS, there was MONO and PEDAL, I think). I didn't have time to deconstruct the sound and see how it was done, but I would suggest that if you can, get a copy of the demo and check out this sound to see how they did it. It was quite good. Maybe if I get a chance, I'll get a copy of the demo from my local dealer and upload it. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= "Debbie's! Great!
