This is a long message that will hopefully explain what I'm up to. As several have pointed out, the method we've been using to upload samples is incompatible in many cases with a very strict and specific directory structure, as gkh files can contain both an oboe and a synth pad, and no one blinks an eye . So, in the coming reorg, which I'm working on this evening, there'll still be a substantial misc directory in the samples section. The misc dir will hold sample collections that have too wide a range of samples to be classified in one specific directory. The structure I'm working with is based on your suggestions, and is admittedly a compromise. I stuck with a slightly simpler structure than some of you suggested, with the understanding that if we need to be more specific, it's easy to add a directory and move affected files. The software I'm using to generate the indexes (which are based on the .txt files you've uploaded to describe your contributions) is extremely flexible, so if something doesn't work out in the organization in the future, it's a snap to move things around. There's a new sequences directory with entries for the ASR, EPS, and TS lines. I'd prefer to stick with Ensoniq-specific sequences, i.e. GM sequences really should go to one of the General MIDI repositories that are already established elsewhere. The reason I created a separate ASR directory is there may be a desire for ASR-specific sequences to be uploaded that use ASR extensions that aren't feasible to use on the EPS series. Please upload sequences using gkh format or MIDI files when possible, and don't feel that you have to limit yourself to one sequence per gkh file. Also, please don't think that this directory structure is forcing you to change any habits. There's nothing wrong with uploading a gkh file that can't be classified in any one directory: if you upload a disk that has more than one type of sample, a bank of related or mixed goodies, etc., it's no problem. Worst that can happen is it'll be put in the misc directory for the sampler type. With that, please feel free to upload banks, samples, sequences, and utils while the reorg is going on. Uploading instructions if you need them are available by sending email to eps-request@oakland.edu. In the body of your message, type: get eps upload I'll send out a tree listing once I finish moving files around, as there's bound to be some surprises. I'm composing a FAX to send to Ensoniq to see if they'd mind me calling the directory 'ensoniq' instead of 'eps'. You'll find index files (called 00-index.txt) in every directory except the /samples area, and they'll appear in samples during "phase II" later in the week. There's also a comma-delimited master index available in /pub/eps/eps.idx that you can either import into a spreadsheet or database applications, or simply search it using grep, an editor, etc. It's in the same format as used for the SimTel(tm) and other archives on oak.oakland.edu, and I'll make a EPS archive-specific document about the format later. Some of the samples have been moved around into the prototype directory tree, although there's still a lot of work to do in this area along with adding index entries for each sample, etc. If you have comments on what I've done so far, please let me know as soon as you can via email. Lastly, it's again possible to upload files directly via anonymous ftp to the /pub/eps/incoming directory, similar to what was possible on ftp.reed.edu. Please remember to send me upload announcements via email, and upload a .txt file to describe your file(s) if it's appropriate. I'll keep the "temporary" upload procedure around for a few more days in case something goes awry, but please don't use it anymore unless you have problems putting files into /pub/eps/incoming.
