A wide variety from Coldcut's sample cd, some other dance stuff right to funk etc. I'm doing remixes for local clubs and dance stuff for radio here etc and planning on bringing out a video of sorts next year sometime. My music preferences range from dance to hardcore techno to even jazz and funk. I hope that some of you will reply soon, as right now I'm sitting here in South Africa; being about the only person here that knows how to program the ASR10 in this country. ;) one small question before I time out: wont someone upload the old 16+'s sounds that came with their machine (all those cool demos 'n sounds)? I got the Resonant filter disk by WAVeBOY yesterday and have some questions since there seems to be either something I am doing wrong, a terrible bug or a bad implementation. I use it with my EPS16+. If there's no cure to my problems I would say this disk is close to useless in a regular midi setup (I am though very satisified with the Audio-in disk). Q number 1: When I play an instrument with the resonant filter it retriggers each time it receives a note-on, *EVEN* if the note is played on another midi-channel (I have adjusted the pan settings to the effect, the problem is that it retriggers even if a note-on is sent to another synth). Q number 2: The FM effect uses the left input to bus 1 as a carrier and the right input to bus1 as the modulator to produce a one-voice FM-sound. Nice (I thought) then I can make an FM-sound interactive and then when I am satisifed use resample with effect to get it as a sample. How wrong I was. The problem is that 'resample with effect' only resamples *one* wavesample with the effect so only the wavesample going into one of the channels of the bus will be sampled and no FM effect will be heard since the other sample is not feeded to the FM-effect. Is there a solution to this. I would like to avoid to first record the sound on tape and then sample it from tape. The filter sounds *very* good, probably as close to analog you would come with a digital simulation. The FM is also very exciting. If the above problems could be solved in any way the disk would be great. /Mikael Hillborg, Musician and Computer Scientist, Sweden From fys.uio.no!t.g.finstad Wed Dec 15 06:48:51 1993 Return-Path: Received: from 129.240.2.50 by reed.edu (/\==/\ Smail3.1.25.1 #25.21) id ; Wed, 15 Dec 93 06:48 PST Received: from ulrik.uio.no by pat.uio.no with local-SMTP (PP) id <15853-0@pat.uio.no>; Wed, 15 Dec 1993 15:48:20 +0100 Received: from [129.240.22.194] by fidibus.uio.no ; Wed, 15 Dec 1993 15:48:15 +0100 Date: Wed, 15 Dec 1993 15:48:15 +0100 Message-Id: <9312151448.AAfidibus24787@fidibus.uio.no> To: eps@reed.edu From: t.g.finstad@fys.uio.no (Terje) X-Sender: tgf@fidibus.uio.no Subject: Re:create drumkits + insts Eric wrote >Hi guys, > >I got to admit it: I've never done it before... >That is to say, I've never created my own drumkit... >Is someone willing to help me on this? >I think the main question is: how to copy a wavesample into another instrument >(with "copy wavesample") and how to address the copied wavesample to a single >key? I have some more general questions regarding making drumsets or new instruments, with the desire to speed the process up. How do You do it efficiently? Any? I do not use the EPS that much for drums myself. I prefer the real thing. So instead of sampling a D4 with the EPS I use a real D4 :-) I've made several drumsets but I'm not all that experienced, and a point is that my need has been special/unusual drums. I have not really settled on a special approach which lends itself for a kind of templete to automate the process the next time around. Allthough I probably could have for part of the work. ( I've not made any great drumsets though. unfortunately ) I think people have been doing various things to speed the creation of new instruments up. Drumsets should lend itself to that. For instance for drumboxes there are rather few real hi hat samples compared to the number of snare samples. With a sampler it is also probable that one will use the same hihats and cymbals for several drumkits. I've noticed that Ensoniq often makes a cymbal layer. This layer can then be copied right into an instrument instead of copying each wave sample individually. If one keep to a standard for key assignment one should have only to do very little editing of the waves in the cymbal layer if any at all. The instrument edits ( correct name??) that the TS10 have implemented can also be a good thing to speed things up. One can then ( at least in principle ) just copy samples into a new instrument without doing any editing. One just has to copy the waves in the correct order. Then apply the instrument edit, and one have an instrument which requires a lot less editing to be usable. Have these things been "ported" to the ASR10 yet? Any rumours will they? Have they become more flexible/powerful for the TS10 than since they were introduced? Any thoughts of implementing instrument edits independently in computer software? (I've not tried out the ts10 ones though, but ) I was thinking making a flexible type of instrument edit that allowed various settable options- like (for pianos) spreading the waves out over the keyboard according to fewer or less samples covering the whole key range - as an option. (for drums) Make copies of samples if sample number don't exist -as an option. Many parameters should also be allowed to retain their original value or obtain the value from the template - as an option. Any thoughts aboat that? Ability to read the current dir, change dirs etc allowing one to select files using the mouse or cursor keys. no more typing in filenames ;) (you guessed it, I'm lazy ) Automatic compression using gzip of files. This means that your files are automatically compressed and decompressed when you want to dump to and from the PC. Great for saving space. The custom screens incidentally are nice 'n colourful too ;) Mouse interface. Yup you can do anything just by pointing and clicking on 'icons' for the different functions. Concise error message field for status reports etc. I've also been fiddling around with fast fourier transforms. Right now this wont be included but the above specs will be uploaded as the EPSUtilHack ;) I hop to upload it by next Monday at latest to reed.edu. Future ideas include editing of instruments perhaps (actually DEFINITELY) Anyways while I'm working on this during the week I'd appreciate any additional advice or 'wants' on other features to include to make this program more user friendly and intuitive. I hope Mr.Chen has no objections to me doing this with his code? =) Oh, and thanks for all the replies to my first post. MUCH appreciated. How do You do it > efficiently? Any? I've been using my 16+ exclusively for drums for a while now, and have been working on sampling several large CD drum collections. My current technique is to store each sound (snare, kick, hats, toms, etc.) as its own instrument, and then when working on a song, I can audition several different kicks, find the right one, several different snares, choose one, etc. So, I end up with (for instance) a kick on Instrument 1, a snare on Instrument 2, hats on Instrument 3, and so on. I store the sounds in directories and sub-directories on my hard drive - the Snares directory, for instance, contains the sub-directories Real and Electronic. This is quite inefficient in terms of Instrument usage, and probably would not be suitable for those who use the EPS for a number of multitimbral parts. However, in my case, I am trying to get the best drum sounds possible, and I'm using a lot of memory and polyphony for the purpose (I work in 44kHz/13 voice mode), so there isn't a lot of polyphony, memory, or for that matter outputs left over for other instruments. Storing them as individual Instruments also means that it's very quick and easy to assemble a kit - no copying of layers or samples, just load and you're done. When the kit is set up, I save the result (along with output assignments) to a Bank. This ease of use is important to me, right now. A variation on this scheme, which would be more efficient in terms of Instrument usage while trading off some programming time, would be to store the sounds as above, but then copy them layer by layer into a new kit, as Terje suggests. This means that auditioning is still easier, and allows for cataloging of the sounds in categories on disk as well. Thanks to Kyle. I haven't had my EPS16+ for so long time so there are still some features I am unfamiliar with. The FM-problem still remains though. One single voice of FM isn't so much fun. I would be great if it was possible to do resample with effect on the FM-effect. Then you could use the single FM-voice to interactively adjust the parameters and hear the results immediately. Then when you're satisfied with it you could do 'resample with effect' to catch it as a sample and voila you would have that sound polyphonic... I have used a program called Softsynth (on my Atari ST) to generate 32 partial additive and FM synthesis samples. The program is excellent and *very* complicated and impressive sounds can be made and then transferred to a sampler (although not the EPS16+). The problem with this program is that it is *slow*. You adjust one parameter and will hear the result by clicking on the speaker icon. Hmmmmm, go have a nap and a coffee break and then you may hear the result :-) Not very userfriendly. That's why I would like this WAVeBOY FM-synthesis if it allowed to resample with effect. Then I would have access to 20 voice FM-synthesis samples capable of modulating samples with each other that I have done myself (compare with the SY-77 etc that only use ROM-samples). Pity this resample didn't work. It must be some way to get around this *inside* the EPS16+ without having to first store the output at an external media and then sample it from this external media. /Mikael Hillborg, Musician and Computer Scientist, Sweden From netcom.com!arioch Thu Dec 16 07:52:56 1993 Return-Path: Received: from 192.100.81.100 by reed.edu (/\==/\ Smail3.1.25.1 #25.21) id ; Thu, 16 Dec 93 07:52 PST Received: from DialupEudora by mail.netcom.com (8.6.4/SMI-4.1/Netcom) id HAA12953; Thu, 16 Dec 1993 07:52:25 -0800 Date: Thu, 16 Dec 1993 07:52:25 -0800 Message-Id: <199312161552.HAA12953@mail.netcom.com> To: eps@reed.edu From: arioch@netcom.com (Peter Johnson) Subject: Any Good ASR Books Out There? I tried to create a D4 kit for my EPS once... once. I got through the first octave of the kit and had hit 1200 blocks, even with extensive looping for decay and using only mono samples. I ran a sequence with that kit and than the the real D4 kit and it was a world of difference. That's when i decided that i needed a D4. Otherwise, Kudos for that advice, Terje! The idea of a cymbal layer has never occured to me, but it makes a whole lot of sense. By the by, does anyone have a good Timpani sample? If the file size is what you're worried about, don't worry - just use gzip to compress the part of the gkh file that represents unused disk space. (ex: typing "gzip accordian.gkh" should create a very small file called accordian.gkh.gz) Good luck. The ones that do work under heavy midi traffic: MPU401 (i use twelve tone's driver), Turtle Beach Multisound, Gravis Ultrasound and V22 and V42 interfaces. Mediavision products are not reliable, nor regular SB. I have no idea if the SB Pro or SB16ASP are reliable in that respect since i have not done tests for these with the midi port. Personnally i use an MPU401 with twelve tone's driver and a Gravis Ultrasound. Plus the Gravis doubles as a .wav playback for cakewalk (up to 16 bit stereo) and a RAM wavetable synth (basically an EPS16+ with no effect and limited to 1MB of RAM). I was >in multi mode for accepting/x-mitting Midi event; I have a >MediaVision Pro Audio Studio 16 card driving my Midi, and this >is on a Gateway DX/2 system.. Any hints would be welcome... It sounds like you have the infamous PC hung-note problem, a condition endemic to many low-cost PC MIDI cards. The problem is that PCs are simply not designed to handle interrupts at an interval of 300 microseconds, which is the interval over which MIDI spaces bytes when transmitting chords and other `simultaneous' events. If the PC is unable to keep up with the timing requirements of the out-going data stream, the device driver will discard note events in order to catch up. PCs like to turn off interrupts for long periods of time. For example, in order to prevent data corruption, SMARTDRV turns off all interrupts while writing cache data to disk. Your best bet is to get a `smart' MIDI card, one with a on-board First In First Out (FIFO) data buffer. It's basically the same idea as the 16550AN serial chip: it buffers multiple incoming serial data and delivers it all to the PC in one big gulp, when the PC is ready to receive it. It also buffers data in the other direction, so the PC can emit several outgoing events at once. All high quality MPU-401 compatible cards have FIFOs. Examples include the MidiQuest MQX-32, the Voyetra V-24m and the V-22m. Be sure to read the fine print in your vendor's spec sheet. Make sure that your vendor's card supports _all_ of the MPU-401 features. Some so-called "MPU-401 compatible" cards omit the FIFO to save a few pennies; an example is the Sound Blaster. A good rule of thumb is to only buy MIDI cards advertised in pro and semi-pro musician oriented magazines (Keyboard, Electronic Musician, Mix, etc.) Avoid the ``multi-media'' stuff advertised in general computer magazines like BYTE and Computer Shopper. Hope this info helps. -Al (P.S. The hung-note problem has been confirmed under DOS, Windows 3.1, OS/2, and Windows NT, under a variety of device drivers and environments, even on the fastest machines. There's no getting around the need for a FIFO.) -- Alan E. Kudos to whomever created basses.gkh (I esp like sub bass) Plus, the only one who seems to upload stuff is Scott Fisher. We should all contribute some stuff for him to download. I uploaded a file of 4 sampled basses to ftp.reed.edu The file is called MMBASSES.GKH.gz Descriptions are in the file MMBASSES.txt Both files are in /eps/incoming Don't know if they'll get moved any time soon. I tried to send mail to eps-ftp.reed.edu as it says to, but it came back. One sound called Lastnightbass uses a technique that I have found successful for getting more analog sounding basses on the EPS. Although this sound is a rather extreme example. The technique is as follows: I distorted the hell out of the sound at the mixing board before it reached the EPS. The result is a very ratty sample that is tamed by the filters. Velocity is routed to filter cutoff, bringing in the distortion making a very analog sounding fuzz. In the upper ranges it sounds like the polysynth sound. In the lower ranges it is a killer techno bass. Anyways, try them and let me know if you like them. Ive just got a 105Mb removable HD (Syquest) for my 16+. Is anyone using one with their EPS/ASR? I've got the problem that the only time that the HD appears to notice the EPS is when the EPS boots and it says "Searching for scsi dev" at which point the disk light goes on, but when I try to format a cart, I only ever get "unconnected scsi dev" (except of course for ID=3, which is the EPS). I've got the terminating resistor pack on the end (as I ought) - besides - the HD does respond, so I suspect an ID/parity/etc sort of problem. Anyone got any hints? In pine, they are called "attachments." Try it if you have > it... And if both the sender and recipient use VMS MAIL, they can take advantage of the undocumented feature of the utility, the /FOREIGN qualifier. When you MAIL a binary file with the /FOREIGN qualifier, the recipient can't read the `message' but can EXTRACT/NOHEADER it. And the file hasn't suffered during the journey (at least not according to my experiments). I've never tried this between other mailers, though. t. I'm a new user of the ASR and the entire electronic music/sampling arena, so I would appreciate it is anyone could give a few tips on the following: 1. Any recommendations for Mac based sequencers that support the ASR? I'm not too fond of the built in sequencer and would like a software replacement. How does the sequencer interact with the board? Do you hook up the two via midi and have the Mac run the ASR, or do you do sequences on the mac and then transfer the files to the ASR? Both of the above? HELP!!! 2. Assuming I can find a sequencer that works, what happens when I do a gig? Please tell me that I don't have to drag the mac along if I want it to do the sequencing.... 3. I know about ftp.reed.edu and the plethora o samples there, but is there a Mac version of epswrite et al? I tried downloading the files to my mac and then copying them to the PC, but the epswrite prog didn't seem to want to recognize my floppy disk as being good. 4. Are there any good third party books about the ASR? I would really like more info on sampling/sequencing and the best ways to use its effects. Please email to me directly, since I'm sure the more experienced users on the list don't need to be overwhelmed by responses for a newbie. Thanks again! EPS Classic "hum" problem Message-Id: <"Macintosh */PRMD=MOT/ADMD=MOT/C=US/"@MHS> greetings all eps classic enthusiasts, A disturbing problem has just surfaced on my EPS; an intermittent "hum" emerges from time to time (trying to describe it better, it's like digital noise, but there's a discernible pitch too, close to middle E). I can disconnect the EPS from everything (mixer, MIDI) and I still hear it using headphones. Specifically, the audio is quiet when I power up the unit and load the OS. Then I load an instrument and play a few notes, and the noise shows up. I've opened the hinged cover for a brief look, but connectors look secure (the unit has not been transported lately; it has performed flawlessly since I bought it new in late 1988) and voltage regulators look in spec. It is equipped with the Ensoniq 2X memory expansion, and no SCSI. Before I dive into the unit more, I was wondering if anyone has encountered something similar. thanks for any ideas, john From reed.edu!horde Wed Jan 5 12:36:03 1994 Return-Path: Received: from 134.10.2.45 by reed.edu (/\==/\ Smail3.1.25.1 #25.21) id ; Wed, 5 Jan 94 12:35 PST Date: Wed, 5 Jan 1994 12:35:21 -0800 (PST) From: "Mr. Heiji Horde" Subject: Re: your mail To: David Dawson cc: eps@reed.edu In-Reply-To: Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII On Tue, 4 Jan 1994, David Dawson wrote: > I'm still not receiving mail from the EPS list, although I sent a > 'subscribe' request to eps-request@reed.com. I have no information about this thing except a price. Hold long has it been out there (in time comparisson to the EPS line: Is it like a Mirage? An EPS? EPS16? ASR10?) How is it as a controller? My most important concerns are: - Keyboard feel - Flexibility of keyboard as a controller in MIDI studio (looking towards more rack mount stuff) - Ability to split the keyboard into separate MIDI layers - Sound quality of ESQ1 itself - Ability to transmit on all 16 MIDI channels. - Base channel/key flexibility? - Lots of controllers (at least Pitch/Mod wheels, also interested in any other controllers too!) Not concerned with: - On-board sequencer. Does anyone have any other opinions about a good controller in the $500-$1400 (used price) range? I have seen an ad for an ESQ1 for about $800 which sounds great to me :-) Please send replies direct so that I don't waste any more time on this list, thanks, and sorry about filling up this space again! Or am i thinking of the SQ1? Fatar has an 88 weighted key midi controller keyboard, I remember street price here being ~$1300 six months ago. I don't think it has any sounds. I'm sure there are many zones, 8 seems be the usual number. Pitch bend & mod wheel, footswitch & maybe a pedal. Not sure if it is pressure sensitive, and of course only channel pressure (only ensoniq has separate key pressure (right folks? that still true?)). What do you mean by layers? Overlapping zones? (layers in the ensoniq world means something else--separate (sets of) wavesamples which are mixed together). But, if you really want to control *SOUND*, sell off some stuff and get something like an ASR-10 or TS10... especially if you enjoy the technical aspects (programming effects, samples, loops, etc.), these will keep you busy for .. ever. Both of these have "presets" which can set various kb splits & patch selects, and both have 15 modulator sources (kb, vel, pres, pitch, mod, cv, xcntrl, lfo, noise, env, foot, patch, etc) which can control virtually any parameter. Expressiveness is never lacking. It's not a box you can ever exhaust. I'm sure the ESQ1 has a sizable subset of these. -todd From bristol.com!arisb Fri Jan 7 06:33:43 1994 Return-Path: Received: from 192.246.192.2 by reed.edu (/\==/\ Smail3.1.25.1 #25.21) id ; Fri, 7 Jan 94 06:33 PST Received: by bristol.com (4.1/SMI-4.1) id AA01602; Fri, 7 Jan 94 09:35:26 EST From: arisb@bristol.com (Aris Antanas Buinevicius) Message-Id: <9401071435.AA01602@bristol.com> Subject: Controller keyboard correction (sorry!) I have heard the term ".EFE" used to describe samples, but when I look in the various sample directories all I see are .GKH samples. Where does .EFE come in? Let me tell you how I go about trying to get samples using my PC: Once I get into ftp.reed.edu: - get pd02.gkh (this is the way the file shows up in the directory - and I am using binary mode) - start the EPSDISK utility - using WRITE, I type B: for destination volume, use defualt directory, and for source I use c:\prolinc\tcp\pd02.gkh (I am using an EPS formatted disk) - when I hit enter I immediately get "error (-1) writing file" Obviously I'm missing something here. Type "C:\prolinc\tcp\pd02.gkh" for the source. 7. Type "b:" for the destination (or "a:" if that's your 3.5 inch drive). 8. If it asks where anything else is located on the disk (like the directory), just hit return. It works for me. Good luck. Hope it helps. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- | Mark Schneider University of Florida | | mas@elm.circa.ufl.edu 305-895-8824/8823 | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- << In Stereo Where Available >> From psuvax1.cse.psu.edu!sol4.cse.psu.edu!mchen Tue Jan 11 09:23:28 1994 Return-Path: <@psuvax1.cse.psu.edu:mchen@sol4.cse.psu.edu> Received: from 130.203.1.6 by reed.edu (/\==/\ Smail3.1.25.1 #25.21) id ; Tue, 11 Jan 94 09:22 PST Received: from sol4.cse.psu.edu ([130.203.2.8]) by psuvax1.cse.psu.edu with SMTP id <293605>; Tue, 11 Jan 1994 12:22:29 -0500 Received: from uranus.cse.psu.edu.cs.psu.edu by sol4.cse.psu.edu (4.1/SMI-4.1) id AA00591; Tue, 11 Jan 94 12:22:14 EST From: mchen@sol4.cse.psu.edu (Michael Chen) Message-Id: <9401111722.AA00591@sol4.cse.psu.edu> Subject: Re: .EFE To: eps@reed.edu (EPS List) Date: Tue, 11 Jan 1994 12:22:12 -0500 In-Reply-To: <9401111555.AA01469@elm.circa.ufl.edu>; from "Mark Schneider" at Jan 11, 94 10:55 am X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.3 PL11] Mark Schneider wrote: | |I've never had a problem using EPSDISK (by they way, are your disks |formatted for EPS first?).
