Sorry, I don't know the terms in english. I want so say that a sampler needs to play back stereo samples phased to avoid phasing if the two samples of the stereo sample contain equal signals. I connected a mono source to both sampling inputs and sampled the signal with 'INPUT DRY L-R' settings. Hereafter I panned both wavesamples to the middle. It sounds as if the signal was filtered, sometime more, sometimes less. So is the ASR 10 a true stereo sampler? Or did I do anything wrong? Any help would be very appreciated! To: eps@reed.edu Date: Fri, 27 Nov 92 16:25:53 PST X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.3 PL0] Hey everyone, there seems to be some general confusion about the archives and their integrity.. well, actually a lot of confusion (notably, MINE). And YES, I AM new to the whole reed.edu EPS "thing" (although not all that new to internet concepts ie. I personally have no prob. with MY ftp, tar, etc.) Nevertheless, I wouldn't be posting this so soon after discovering you all except for two things: 1) I read ALL of the discussion archives beginning to end until the scraping sound my crusty eyeballs made rubbing against their leathery sockets woke my girlfriend and she made me come to bed. 2) There APPEARS to be a LOT of great stuff here, and being poor, I don't BUY sounds.. soooo.. I would be SO HAPPY if I could use them. (Don't worry, we're chugging along to a point..) A billion people seem to have posted about various and *inconsistant* problems with one .gkh file or another, and the answer is invariably either "gee, I dunno," or "well, yes, there is a problems with [this one] but not [that one], and only if you have an EPS classic with third party SCSI on thursdays and Saturdays.." -OR- some totally non-linear response.. As for myself I use/have a Mac, YES, a MAC-IN-TOSH (fx as a matter of fact) - and I'm really happy about it considering the alternative, BUT I do recognize that not everyone is as fortunate and enlightened :^/ so when the "aDOWNLOADER" app produced disk after disk after disk of unusable instruments ([LOAD-INST] [YES] "chig-chig-CH..") and SoftAT's just-like-a-BIOS is crapped on by whatever spooky just-like-DMA calls these utils all employ.. I figured, OK, get to a PC. -Every uta PC. -every util hung on execution-gs work on 486's? I tried everything I could think of..) So? Is it that one MUST purchase EDM, or get an Atari & use DW? Does THAT even work? I'm getting a little discouraged.. and I DON'T GET how they could ALL be failed downloads - I ftp binary stuff all the time, never have a problem (you're even in my .netrc) so is this some *particularly* wacky, unreliable server? I de-compress using MacCompress so wouldn't there be some sort of checksum error if that were the case? BTW, I *did* get ONE disk to work -- "disco#1". Using aDOWNLOADER. Not the second disk, so the bank won't load, but I CAN load the instruments one by one from the first disk. It was just enough to compell me to spend another few hours trying to get something else.. Come to think of it, I'm a little discouraged with my EPS16+ in general, though. It's so spit and bubble gum, but I guess that's for another post. Thanks for reading my rant.. :^) Please help if you can. -p From sndcrft.dialix.oz.au!steveq Sat Nov 28 01:34:07 1992 Return-Path: Received: from 128.250.1.21 by reed.edu (/\==/\ Smail3.1.25.1 #25.21) id ; Sat, 28 Nov 92 01:33 PST Received: from uniwa.uwa.edu.au by munnari.oz.au with SMTP (5.83--+1.3.1+0.50) id AA04344; Sat, 28 Nov 1992 20:33:02 +1100 (from steveq@sndcrft.dialix.oz.au) Received: from perth.DIALix.oz.au (DIALix.oz.au) by uniwa.uwa.edu.au with SMTP (5.65c) id AA16154; Sat, 28 Nov 1992 17:32:50 +0800 Received: from sndcrft by perth.DIALix.oz.au id aa02423; 28 Nov 92 17:32 WST Received: by sndcrft.DIALix.oz.au (V1.16/Amiga) id AA00596; Sun, 1 Jan 78 02:34:17 PST Date: Sun, 1 Jan 78 02:34:17 PST Message-Id: <7801011034.AA00595@sndcrft.DIALix.oz.au> Organization: Sound Craft Creative Music From: Steve Quartly To: eps@reed.edu Subject: Great..... r_u_ready_2! ( I think there is only one or two instruments on one or two disks that were "corrupted" ). So rather than spreading the rumour there is something wrong whith the archives it is better to state that..... ++++++++IMPORTANT MESSAGE+++++++IMPORTANT MESSAGE+++++++ The eps disk images that are located at eps.reed.edu:/pub/eps.samples are OK. They are not corrupted. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Images that are newly uploaded, have not gone through critical testing. There can be problems and we should report errors we find about stuff that is located in /pub/eps/incoming >As for myself I use/have a Mac, YES, a MAC-IN-TOSH (fx as a matter of fact) Of course there is nothing wrong with YOUR MacCompress, but please note that there are faulty versions of MacCompress available at university sites around the internet. The one that is/was located at eps.reed.edu:/pub/eps/utils is OK. ( I have had the faulty version before ) Also note that MacCompress has two modes, One unix compress and one Mac. Mac is the default, but you DONT want that. Also note that unix compress gives you as default the option to add LineFeed to Carriage Return. You DONT want that. So it is easy to make a mistake. > >wacky, unreliable server? I de-compress using MacCompress so wouldn't there >be some sort of checksum error if that were the case? > In short, No. MacCompress does not tell you that it/you have done an error. Also note that you should make a copy of the original as MacCompress destroys the original, and it will NOT give you THAT back by reversing the process. Also note the following situation can occur: MacCompress may not tell about errors (you make or itself is making), epswrite may not tell about the error, your eps16+ may not tell abot the error before you actually load the instrument. >BTW, I *did* get ONE disk to work -- "disco#1". The wise strategy seems to me always to get ONE disk to work first. There are a few short diskimages that are well suited for that purpose. ( We can be a little wise-after-the-event-has-happened-smartassed here: going on to the next image to see if that works when the first don't is greed, asking the list if something was wrong with xxx.gkh.Z and describing your problem with that could save you some grief [ and give the list members a reason to say something about the content ] ) >Using aDownLoader. Not the >second disk, so the bank won't load, but I CAN load the instruments one >by one from the first disk. It was just enough to compell me to spend another >few hours trying to get something else.. > People that have not read the documentation to aDownLoader don't know aboat these bankloads. So some info aboat that: The documentation for aDownLoader says that bank-loads over two disks in general won't work, it also states there is a completely different situation for EPS16+ and EPS classic. I really don't think that is anything to be upset about.( It is really more remarkable that you can do anything at all with these banks for two different synths ). The EPS16+ and EPS uses two different type of banks. You don't have to know this, but if you want to and if you want to know what bank type there is in an image, then, if you look upon the listing of files in aDL you see four letter words for the filetypes these are: 'BANK'=eps classic bank, 'LK16'=eps16+ bank, 'SONG'=eps classic song, 'SO16'=eps16+ song. Banks can have many different functions, so far in the eps sample archive, there have mostly been banks for the purpose of loading a song together with its instruments. So that is what I refer to below, but I'm sure that shortly after this someone uploads 100 banks which have a completely different purpose. None of the following may apply to that Presently the following situations occur Classic bank or 16+ bank over one disk: No problems, everything loads as normal on the eps and eps16+. ( sounds trivial, is not ) Classic bank spread over two disks by aDL: read by Classic: The Classic will crash when loading the bank. (The files are not on the disk, but the bank say they are ) One has to load all instruments and songs manually. read by eps16+: Will not crash. It loads whatever instruments and songs it finds. It just bails out for those it don't find. ( The eps16+ will 'translate'[slightly] the instrument definitions and the songs ) The instruments that then are missing can be loaded manually. eps16+ bank spread over two disks by aDL: read by Classic: The Classic cannot read these banks at all. You are not told by eps it is there, so you wont try read by eps16+: Will crash, if you don't load the instruments first. If an instrument of a bank is already loaded, the eps16+ will not reload it when you load the bank -thus- you can load all the instruments, not on the same disk as the bank, manually. The bank-load then only loads the remaining instruments and fxs. Take the next info with a grain of salt since I don't own an eps16+: It is best that you actually do the bank load,( the operation itself) on the eps16+ ( and not only load all instruments and song manually and then play ). Doing the load will set the instruments volume and route their outputs to the appropriate busses. If you think this sounds like the story of the phase of the moon, I agree: It won't affect your life to a large extend. It could be interesting/ok to know, but no big deal if not. >Come to think of it, I'm a little discouraged with my EPS16+ in general, >though. >It's so spit and bubble gum, but I guess that's for another post. > ! >Thanks for reading my rant.. :^) Please help if you can. > The world is full of sounds just waiting for you to sample and turn into a higher artform, please listen to and hear their crying prayer. ha det, terje From fys.uio.no!t.g.finstad Sat Nov 28 10:12:10 1992 Return-Path: Received: from 129.240.2.50 by reed.edu (/\==/\ Smail3.1.25.1 #25.21) id ; Sat, 28 Nov 92 10:11 PST Received: from ulrik.uio.no by pat.uio.no with local-SMTP (PP) id <10225-0@pat.uio.no>; Sat, 28 Nov 1992 19:10:46 +0100 Received: from [129.240.22.194] by fidibus.uio.no ; Sat, 28 Nov 1992 19:10:42 +0100 Date: Sat, 28 Nov 1992 19:10:42 +0100 Message-Id: <9211281810.AAfidibus10560@fidibus.uio.no> To: eps@reed.edu From: Terje Finstad Sender: t.g.finstad@fys.uio.no Subject: Re: Great... r_u_ready_2! + instrument design? Steve Quartly writes: >Well done! >Only wish I could write this sorta stuff my self, I try but it never quite >gets there. Hmmmmmmm. > I believe you are very close. In the demo there are several things that are well made. One thing that strikes me is how alive the bass line is. I think that the bass instrument is really well made. What we can be happy about is that this instrument gives us the possibility to construct similar bass lines and also gives ideas as to how to make other bass instruments for other bass lines, or ? Maybe all pro eps sound makers make them this way already?? Have you, (all), tried out the bass instrument on r_u_ready2 ? Note the different performances and the velocity switching. Also mute all the other instruments and only play the bass part. Now try to play something yourself using performance presets and velocity. If I remember correctly I found it to be not all that easy to get full control over this. Does any have thoughts/knowledge about how this bass-part/sequence was made in the first place? Was it first made a digital direct to hard disk recording of a bass pattern, and then individual notes cut out in a program something like Sound Tools? And what was kept was the minimum number of individual samples needed to reconstruct the original feeling when put together with transposed versions? Or was it initiated as: These types of samples would be OK to have- Then those where sampled, and- afterwards the arranger had to practice playing this instrument until he could play those funky lines fluently? dead end ha det, terje ---------------------------------------------------------------------- if you know someone that knows someone that has a friend that knows someone that is friends with somebody that can play guerilja flute, then I want to be your friend. --------------------------------------------------------------------- From fys.uio.no!t.g.finstad Sat Nov 28 10:23:34 1992 Return-Path: Received: from 129.240.2.50 by reed.edu (/\==/\ Smail3.1.25.1 #25.21) id ; Sat, 28 Nov 92 10:22 PST Received: from ulrik.uio.no by pat.uio.no with local-SMTP (PP) id <10349-0@pat.uio.no>; Sat, 28 Nov 1992 19:22:24 +0100 Received: from [129.240.22.194] by fidibus.uio.no ; Sat, 28 Nov 1992 19:22:20 +0100 Date: Sat, 28 Nov 1992 19:22:20 +0100 Message-Id: <9211281822.AAfidibus10593@fidibus.uio.no> To: eps@reed.edu From: Terje Finstad Sender: t.g.finstad@fys.uio.no Subject: Re: Uh, what's going on? samples,gkh,eps,16+,pc,rave,dance Since this was an important message it should be repeated (hopefully without typos ) I included some extra keywords, so it can be seen by more people: ++++++++IMPORTANT MESSAGE+++++++IMPORTANT MESSAGE+++++++ The eps disk images that are located at eps.reed.edu:/pub/eps/samples are OK.
