Also, is there a faster way to copy effects to a disk (from floppy to SCSI) without loading each effect in (from the WaveBoy disk for example) and then changing disks (hopefully via a macro) and then saving in the approp. place? thanks much... (1) General info (2) How to upload a sample file (3) How to download a sample file (4) File naming conventions (5) Documentation ============================ (1) General info =========================== This ftp site has been created as a place where EPS samples and sequences may be placed for distribution to other EPS users. NOTE that only PUBLIC-DOMAIN samples/sequences are to be uploaded to this site. Violations of this request may cause the closure of the site and possibly copyright action. Files stored in the /pub/samples directory are EPS disk-images created with the freeware "epsread" and "epswrite" utilities running under the MS-DOS operating system. These files are MS-DOS binaries. Most of the files in this directory (the ones ending in .Z) have been compressed with the standard unix "compress" command. The "epsread/write" software is in the /pub/utils directory. In order to upload/download sounds to this site, you need at least the following... A) FTP direct or FTP mail access. B) A IBM compatable PC or Atari ST with a 3.5" floppy disk drive. C) The appropriate conversion utility for your computer system. PC = epsread.exe, epswrite.exe ... /pub/util Atari = disk-wizard (able to read .gkh)/pub/util Mac and Unix are under development. The rest of these instructions make two assumptions: that you're using an MS-DOS personal computer to create image files of EPS disks, and that you're using a unix-based computer to transfer the files to nextweek.reed.edu. Atari ST users can use the appropriate utility in place of "epsread" and "epswrite", and Macintosh users can either borrow an MS-DOS (or Atari) machine, or wait patiently until a Macintosh utility program is available. If your only access to the Internet is through a VMS system, check with your local support guru for instructions on how to get your EPS image files from the VMS computer to nextweek.reed.edu. IMPORTANT NOTE: File-transfer software for most computers allows the user to choose different transfer modes for different types of files. Two modes are usually supported: "text" for plain text files, and "binary" for binary files. Without going into further detail, please remember this: ALWAYS TRANSFER FILES IN BINARY MODE! =============== (2) How to upload a sample file ================= So, let's say you want to share your carefully-crafted drum kit with the rest of the Internet.... * Insert the EPS floppy disk into your personal computer. * Run "epsread.exe" and save the image file to your hard disk. * If your PC is on a local area network and has a fixed IP address, you may be able to ftp your EPS image file directly to nextweek.reed.edu (again, ask your local network support person if you're not sure). * Otherwise, first transfer (via network or modem) the image file (in BINARY mode) to the machine that allows you to access the Internet. Then use the unix "compress" program to compress the file (again, ask your local support person if you need help with this). * Finally, use the ftp program to connect to nextweek.reed.edu. When prompted for a name, type "anonymous"; when prompted for a password, type your email address. Once you're connected, make sure your transfer software is in "binary" mode (see above) and change directory to /pub/incoming (this is the only directory in which guests have permission to put files). Then use the "put" command to upload the file to nextweek . Here's a transcript of a typical unix ftp session, wherein the anonymous user uploads the file "grunguit.gkh.Z": % ftp nextweek.reed.edu Connected to nextweek.reed.edu. 220 nextweek FTP server (Version 5.20 (NeXT 1.0) Sun Nov 11, 1990) ready. For example, the file "grunguit.gkh.Z" contains EPS instruments based on heavily processed ("grungy") guitars, "tek-perc.gkh.Z" conatians hi-tech drum and percussion sounds. The filenames have the extension ".gkh" because they were created with the epsread/epswrite utilities (the author's name is Goh King Hwa, his efforts are most appreciated!). Files ending in ".Z" have been compressed with the standard UNIX "compress" command. Some files on nextweek.reed.edu lack the .Z extension because "compress" could not significantly reduce their size. ======================== (5) Documentation ================================ When you upload a sample file, we ask that you include a short text file describing your sample file. These files should be named "filename.txt" (where "filename" is also the name of your sample file); they will be moved into the /pub/docs directory. It's possible to view the contents of a text file from within the UNIX ftp program, so you don't have to download the file, exit ftp, and then read it. To view a file on your terminal from within the ftp program, add " -" to the end of the "get" command, as in this example: ftp> get tek-perc.txt - We ask that you PLEASE use the following template for your readme files, including the name of each EPS instrument, size in disk blocks, type of sound (e.g., synth, strings, drums, etc.), and a brief description: ------------------------------- cut here ---------------------------------- EPS DISK IMAGE FILE ------------------------------ Sent by: |----------------------------------------------------------------------------| |Name |Size|Type |Description | |----------------------------------------------------------------------------| ----------------------------- end of template ------------------------------- ============================ finally... ===================================== Thanks for taking the time to read through this document. Crosley Message-Id: <9209221554.AA00821@gateway.rsinc.com> To: eps@reed.edu Subject: New EPS 16+ samples at nextweek.reed.edu. Hi there, fellow EPS'ers! Just wanted to let you know that I've uploaded 7 disks of EPS 16+ samples from my own library to nextweek.reed.edu. I did all the sampling and programming on these sounds myself, so let me know what you think! There are 3 disks (krcsyn1.gkh, krcsyn2.gkh, krcsyn3.gkh) that contain mostly "digital synth" type samples. Most of the instruments use the patch selects for different effects. Three more disks contain a HUGE string ensemble built as 2 instruments -- one for the lower half of the keyboard and one for the upper half (krcstr1.gkh, krcstr2.gkh, krcstr3.gkh). After you've "epswritten" the three disks, load LO STRG KC and HI STRG KC into separate instruments. The second parts of both instruments can be found on the krcstr3.gkh disk. Select both instruments to create a "full keyboard" string ensemble. The patch selects don't do much here --- I got worn out just doing the looping on this one. You'll need a memory expander to load both parts at the same time. I think these instruments are pretty good. The highest string samples are not perfect, but the sounds match pretty well across the keyboard and the loops are terrific. Finally, there's a disk of miscellaneous percussion and effects, including an instrument that is all record scratches (krcperx.gkh). I like smaller drumkits with just a few instruments in them, so that's what you'll find here. Enjoy! --- Keith R. Crosley (keith@rsinc.com) P.S. I've had quite a bit of interest, but my EPS 16+ is still for sale -- email me for details. Cannot UNCOMPRESS file. I don't know the messages you get but in any case for those other persons with ftpmail or automated scripts, the filenames in the "krc library" are: krcperx.gkh.Z, krcstr1.gkh, krcstr2.gkh, krcstr3.gkh.Z, krcsyn1.gkh, krcsyn2.gkh, krcsyn3.gkh.Z that tells which are compressed- so the percussion IS compressed. Your error message may confuse you, I',m only guessing though:. The message is what you get when you ask for a filename and that same filename exist in a compressed version. So "filename.Z" exist, but "filename" do not exist;and you asked to get "filename". The ftp program would then have done the uncompress IF it had been set up to do so, (by the availability of uncompress to the logged in user). I guess it might as well be set up the way it is though. hope I didn't confuse too many too much now terje From sand.sics.bu.oz.au!s057 Thu Oct 1 05:54:43 1992 Return-Path: Received: from 131.244.1.1 by reed.edu (/\==/\ Smail3.1.25.1 #25.21) id ; Thu, 1 Oct 92 05:54 PDT Received: from surf.sics.bu.oz.au by kirk.bu.oz.au using SMTP (5.65b) id AA28995; Thu, 1 Oct 92 22:54:21 +1000 Received: from SAND.SICS.BU.OZ.AU by surf.sics.bu.oz.au using SMTP (5.65b) id AA21075; Thu, 1 Oct 92 22:54:31 -0900 Return-Path: Received: by sand.sics.bu.oz.au (5.57/Ultrix-32-V3.0) id AA20334; Thu, 1 Oct 92 22:57:18 EST From: Stephen Gregory Message-Id: <9210011257.AA20334@sand.sics.bu.oz.au> Subject: BIOS level programming To: eps@reed.edu Date: Thu, 1 Oct 92 22:57:17 EST X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.3 PL11] Attention Programming Gurus / EPS Owners ... I am in the middle of writing a cataloging program for my 16+ on a PC. I have got it all basically implemented, and it lists all files on the floppy, and deals with sub-directories etc. I have to read portions of the file allocation table however to ensure that subdirectories are contiguous. However, part of the FAT is at Sector 0 Head 1, and I can't figure out how to read it. I'm already using direct reads from the BIOS, but I get something like an invalid sector error when I try to read sector 0. I realise the differences between DOS and Ensoniq disk formats, and my only documentation at this stage is Gary Geibler's notes on Ensoniq Disk Formats. If there is someone out there who has written a program like this could they get back to me (soon if possible - it's for a university assignment). Umm...if I understand this right, its because I don't have the compress/uncompress utilities where the ftpmail server expects to find them. If there`s any sounds close to those sounds I'd like to know the proper names of the sounds or disks and where I might be able to get them. Here's the text from an ad from Leo's in Oakland: Ensoniq ups the ante for samplers...again!! Introducing the new ASR-10 -- advanced sampling keyboard. Following in the tradition of the Mirage, EPS, EPS16, and EPS 16+, Ensoniq stretches the affordability and advanced technology to deliver the most capability for your money. Check out these features: -on board effects processing (1st for a sampler) -up to 16 Mb of memory -stereo or mono sampling with "Layer-Lock" -24 bit effects with 50 algorithms -resampling--through the effects!! -uses Hi Density disks = more sounds per disk -advanced SCSI accepts 7 drives & CD ROM best of all, the ASR-10 is _only_ $2695.00. Doesn anyone know what the machine is supposed to be listing for? Think I'll have to wait out the initial furor before running out and buying mine. 16 Mb sure does sound good. Just a bit, Simon
