Prices on the ME-16 (Extra memory expansion) and SP-2 (SCSI interf) I've been given from Park Pianos in Perth are AUS$599 and AUS$275 respectively. To me that is just way over the top. What other prices are around in Aus for these? Maartists have their ME-16 and SP-2 equivalents listed as US$119 each. Who has used these? Are they ok, does the memory expansion include the RAM? With those sort of prices I'm more prepared to buy direct from the States. Obviously Ensoniq won't sell to me direct. I remember the discussion a couple of months ago about the difference between Ensoniq's and others gear and there was no real diff in price. Well it seems there is a big diff in Western Australia! :-( So, please post reports of costs, performance and caveats of the two adapters (for the EPS-16+) for both in Australia and in the U.S. Thanks in advance Leigh -======-=======-=======-=======-=======-========-=======-=======-=====-+ Leigh Smith Reply to ---> Home: leigh@psychok.DIALix.oz.au | First Ph: +61-9-450-2014 | Currently at: Work: leigh@hp750.comsys.DIALix.oz.au| Comsys International Ph: +61-9-389-8877 | Perth, Western Australia /=============================================+ ------------------------/ From psy.uwa.edu.au!scott Mon Jun 29 00:38:19 1992 Return-Path: Received: from 128.250.1.21 by reed.edu (/\==/\ Smail3.1.25.1 #25.21) id ; Mon, 29 Jun 92 00:38 PDT Received: from wapsy.psy.uwa.oz.au by munnari.oz.au with SMTP (5.83--+1.3.1+0.50) id AA10250; Mon, 29 Jun 1992 17:37:56 +1000 (from scott@psy.uwa.edu.au) Received: by psy.uwa.edu.au (4.1/SMI-4.1) id AA16856; Mon, 29 Jun 92 15:36:25 WST Date: Mon, 29 Jun 92 15:36:25 WST From: scott@psy.uwa.edu.au (Scott Fisher) Message-Id: <9206290736.AA16856@psy.uwa.edu.au> To: eps@reed.edu Subject: ME-16 and SP-2 Prices... On the UNIX command line (sys5.3, on top of Apollo Domain/OS SR10.3), I type compress ind_perc.gkh After about 45 seconds, I get the command line again, but there is no ind_perc.gkh.Z file in the directory. I'm considering using Csound to generate algorithmic/digital waveforms and then import them with the proper EPSread/write header from the PC into the EPS. For those new to acoustic compilers (like Csound), these programs create 16 bit sample data based on oscillator configurations that you set up. In other words you can make your sampler sound like many other keyboards using whatever type of algorithm you desire. When I try to sample my analog synth, I get too much aliasing on the EPS. This is an alternate way of getting these types of sounds. Also there are some new PC cards that allow 16 bit sampling for around $200. This could allow those of us with Classic EPS' to make better samples like the ones we get from Ensoniq or those creatable on the 16+. Csound is shareware and available at ftp.bath.ac.uk in the pub/jpff directory pre-compiled for the 286 & 386. john From millie.loc.gov!jeff Mon Jun 29 11:29:19 1992 Return-Path: Received: from 140.147.2.12 by reed.edu (/\==/\ Smail3.1.25.1 #25.21) id ; Mon, 29 Jun 92 11:29 PDT Received: from millie.loc.gov by rs1.loc.gov (AIX 1.3/4.03) id AA10156; Mon, 29 Jun 92 14:25:33 -0400 Received: by millie.millie (4.1/SMI-4.1-jjm2) id AA08825; Mon, 29 Jun 92 14:21:36 EDT Date: Mon, 29 Jun 92 14:21:36 EDT From: jeff@millie.loc.gov (Jeff Mallory) Message-Id: <9206291821.AA08825@millie.millie> To: eps@reed.edu Subject: ftp by mail info >From nobody@Pa.dec.com Mon Jun 29 14:18:06 1992 Return-Path: Received: from uucp-gw-2.pa.dec.com by millie.loc.gov.millie (4.1/SMI-4.1-jjm2) id AA08768; Mon, 29 Jun 92 14:18:02 EDT Received: by uucp-gw-2.pa.dec.com; id AA21413; Mon, 29 Jun 92 11:25:20 -0700 Date: Mon, 29 Jun 92 11:25:20 -0700 Message-Id: <9206291825.AA21413@uucp-gw-2.pa.dec.com> From: nobody@Pa.dec.com (ftpmail daemon on uucp-gw-2.pa.dec.com) To: jeff@millie.loc.gov Subject: your ftpmail request has been received X-Complaints-To: ftpmail-request@uucp-gw-2.pa.dec.com Status: R >>> $Id: help-text,v 1.3 1992/06/13 18:06:56 vixie Exp $ >>> >>> commands are: reply set reply addr, since headers are usually wrong connect [HOST [USER [PASS]]] defaults to gatekeeper.dec.com, anonymous ascii files grabbed are printable ascii binary files grabbed are compressed or tar or both chdir PLACE "get" and "ls" commands are relative to PLACE (only one CHDIR per ftpmail session, and it executes before any LS/DIR/GETs) compress compress binaries using Lempel-Ziv encoding compact compress binaries using Huffman encoding uuencode binary files will be mailed in uuencode format btoa binary files will be mailed in btoa format chunksize SIZE split files into SIZE-byte chunks (def: 64000) ls (or dir) PLACE short (long) directory listing get FILE get a file and have it mailed to you (max 10 GET's per ftpmail session) quit terminate script, ignore rest of mail message (use if you have a .signature or are a VMSMAIL user) >>> notes: -> you should send complaints to the ftpmail-request address. our postmaster does not handle ftpmail problems and you can save her the trouble of forwarding your complaints by just mailing them to the right address. -> the "Subject:" of your request will be contained in the "Subject:" of all of ftpmail's responses to you regarding that request. I usually get between one and four of these when I send to a mailing list, depending on the size of the list. Really, the list should set up outgoing messages so that error messages go to the list maintainer, who can then bump the addresses. As it is, if the list maintainer doesn't post often, you should forward the errors to him or her manually so they can eliminate the bad addresses from the list. Don't send more than one instance of the same bad address, though! The fact is that your repeated attempts made it through to everyone else on the list! This has also been called a '.gkh format', it is essentially an image of the eps diskette, with a small header and optional comment fields at the end. So for a complete description you need a description of this header and the eps diskette itself and the different entries in the eps diskette. There are to my knowledge mostly three classical, well written informative documents in the eps mail archive available at reed.edu, on these subject. ( Prior to those letters one also finds a discussion, eventually leading to the letter, exiting reading ) In addition there are information in Transonique Hacker on this. I should subscribe to that one of these days. The three letters mentioned are: 1 from Scott Fisher ,, 24 Jan 92 The EPS Floppy Disk Format is explained 2 from Steve Quartly,,18/19 Apr 92 The EFE and EDE file format described. (Used by Steve's DiskWizard and Giebler's Ensonique Diskette Manager) This is not the gkh format but a)the information given is useful and b) the .EFE format is worth considering if you just want to handle small chunks of data yourself. 3 from Goh King Wha, , 24 Mar 92 This describes the bytes that epswrite.exe puts in the header of a .gkh file. Above I have included the message ID and the dates so that it should be easier to locate in the archive. ( by grep or something ) for those needing it ============================= >I'm considering using Csound to generate >algorithmic/digital waveforms and then import them with the proper >EPSread/write header from the PC into the EPS. A comment on format: As you find out, if you were to generate an imagefile as the .gkh format, you would have to worry about the whole contents of the diskette, not just what you are generating. It would certainly not be too convenient to store the output of your program in a .gkh format. ( Unless you want to calculate humongous samples, in which case you might as well) For those things you may choose .EFE and use a utility apropriate for the platform to assemble disks for transfer/tests..etc. May be also those utilities have a provision for adding 16 bits raw data to the file as plain vanilla-type instruments without me knowing. Otherwise we may suggest it beeing added in the next version.;-) ? I will work on that type of thing myself, for similar things you mention. Since I use macs preferably, it will probably be a utility where I transfer Audio-IFF files to plain vanilla instruments in a gkh image file, and transfer the image to a PC with epswrite. Now I can calculate samples with 32 bits. ( I have my own sample generating software called the Sound Massage Parlor ) When I save these as AIFF files I save them as 16 bit samples. When I transfer them to the EPS classic I do that by midi ( cannot get scsi to work ) and this is just using 12 bits. When I write instruments on the EPS diskette these will then only have 12 bit samples. So by putting them on the diskette by the computer I could have 16 bits samples, It wouldn't benefit ME, but it would those with EPS16+ that might want to play my samples. > When I try to sample my analog synth, I get too much aliasing >on the EPS. This is an alternate way of getting these types of sounds.{analog} Well aliasing is one chracteristics of digital sound :-) The EPS seems to do a very unsophisticated table skip when transposing sounds, this will easily cause problems also when you calculate sounds and you have to be very careful unless you want it to sound digital.( get aliasing ), but you'll find out. ( Actually aliasing problems could be much worse ) It would be fun to hear what sounds you come up with. I know several in this group have got Csound. What about some Csound samples on altosax? ( what does he mean? does he mean samples of an altosax playing middle C or? ) Regards Terje //////// \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ / \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ /////////// / / instad \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ / \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ / erje \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ -------------- ================================================= From itd.nrl.navy.mil!adamson Tue Jun 30 06:16:34 1992 Return-Path: Received: from 128.60.2.2 by reed.edu (/\==/\ Smail3.1.25.1 #25.21) id ; Tue, 30 Jun 92 06:14 PDT Received: by itd.nrl.navy.mil (4.1/SMI-4.1) id AA12098; Tue, 30 Jun 92 09:14:45 EDT From: adamson@itd.nrl.navy.mil (Brian Adamson) Message-Id: <9206301314.AA12098@itd.nrl.navy.mil> Subject: uploading sounds for others To: eps@reed.edu Date: Tue, 30 Jun 92 9:14:39 EDT X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.3 PL0] I also volunteer to occasionally upload sounds if people can e-mail them to me. The tool was made of a telescope rod. It had a small bag to hold one apple and a sharp cutting blade at the end. I was stealing, but I did it with *class*, I thought. And the paralell is obvious?: I have made a utility for the Mac which reads and writes Roland samplers' disks. It also takes the Tones off the disks and store the samples in a format Mac people hopefully are familiar with. The rest is for the fortunate,(or unfortunate if you insist) Mac people, well those that are still hanging in. If you want the utility, fine. My question: Do you have this already?, Would you rather see it didn't exist? This is a mac utility for the 'sgroup' which I think I will owe them if I steal their samples ( so I steal what they have stolen, which someone has stolen from someone......, but, I can steal something which I can give back to them , and I can give them a tool so they can be better thieves ) (If we don't like Roland samplers? then it may help to know that much public domain samples originate from other samplers, surprisingly many drum machines, I hardly know what a Roland sampler looks like myself) Lets call the utility SMAC, I try to tell something about it It (SMAC) operates on diskimages of/for Roland Samplers It runs on a Mac, It's crummy. It may not work on your mac? It will/should: Transfer Roland disks to/from Images on HardDisk X Catalog a Roland Image X Pick out an individual "Tone" ,=sample and save as a file in Audio IFF format, X SoundDesigner 1.0 SFIL format, X Sound Designer II format ? need more testing .VAW format for Windows - under study Take a SFIL or AIFF file and save it as a "plain vanilla Tone of a plain need testing vanilla Patch in an image. As you can see if you have a utility for transferring samples of type SFIL, Sd2f or AIFF to/from your mac you can utilize Roland diskettes or diskimages with the EPS WITHOUT having a Roland sampler. To read Roland diskettes the Mac needs a superdrive. I can also write this for the PC, However for the PC there is a utility called SAMDISK. It does several of these things, however not picking out individual tones, although I'm sure the author could have done that easily. So I'll do that one of these days == = = = I would like some with different Roland Samplers to test if the plain vanilla patches I assemble work. anyone? or you feel like guinnea pigs? I also like to know how well the formats work with the various applications. With each others help we may make a swell telescope apple-picker with double grab bag. This comes from the Transoniq Hacker April '92 magazine. If you're using an Ensoniq product and not reading TH, you are doing yourself a great disservice. There are a large number of reviews of add-ons, third party sounds, hints, hardware mods etc. It is completely independant of Ensoniq, although Ensoniq will answer questions submitted to it. For further information email me, look out for Scott Fishers EPS survival guide or even better, subscribe to the EPS users maillist eps-request@reed.edu. Anyway, enough of the blurb (I'm not associated with TH in any way other than being a subscriber): Tested and Approved Hard Drives for the EPSs The drives listed below are known to be compatible with the EPS and EPS-16+ _at the time of testing_. Chnages in firmware or hardware by drive manufacturers may make later versions incompatible (with the exception of PS Systems, Eltekon and Frontera whose drives are configured to work specifically with Ensoniq Products). Ask him about adding a disk compressor to the next OS version on the Classic and the 16. The Compressor would save the samples in a compressed format to save space. The OS should recognize a compressed instrument and uncompress it during loading. This will take longer but it should also be optional. The quoted price is around $2050 (comments as to this price would be welcome). My application for the EPS is to provide an automated source of band members for practice and for composition. The intent is to use the EPS to provide the parts for those band members not present. Typically it will be used to provide one or more guitar tracks (lead and rhythm), and drums (in addition to possibly using it as a keyboard ;-) ). I have pretty much selected it for the following reasons: - Only thing out there that has reasonable guitar sounds. - Ability to get around limited effect availability by sampling a guitar playing the actual effect and then using it in a sequence (this seems to be a problem since the audio gets muted if you are using both effects busses and then want to switch in a new effect). - Ability to get around the "it's hard to make a keyboard sound like a guitar" problem by being able to sample chord strums/muting/etc and then sequence them into rhythm parts. I do have a few concerns, however. These are: - I've heard that motherboard failures/replacements are a common problem. - I'm not sure how easy it is to make certain kinds of edits. For example, suppose I've just sequenced 20 measures of a song and decide that I want to change a quarter note in measure 3 to a half note, changing the whole length of the song by 1 beat. Will the EPS understand that sort of change and adjust measures 3-20 accordingly (possibly adding measure 21)? - Are there any software tools available to simplify entering guitar parts? Any comments with respect to the above would be most helpful. For a point of reference I'm planning on sequencing mostly classic rock (Led Zepplin, Rush), Southern Rock (Lynard Skynrd, Eagles, CDB), and some Blues/Country. Well the EPS is what it eats too :-) Without good software the EPS\16 Plus ain't much use. Below are a selection of products that I have found make a difference to the EPS's appeal... Diskette Utilities: For EPS & PCs, Geibler enterprises Ensoniq Diskette Manager (EDM) is a good thing. It formats, copies and does just about everything to not only EPS disks but all Ensoniq Formats (Mirage, ESQ-80, VFX-SD, SD-1). This is also good for storing EPS disks on your PC'd hard disk in DOS format. Makes it easy to send EPS disks via the NET too. For more info, write to Geibler Enterprises 8038 Morgan Road Liverpool, N.Y. 13090 U.S.A. For EPS and ATARI, Steve Quartly has Share-Ware avaliable that he wrote. Does everything EDM does with EPS disks and MORE. Contact Steve at.. steveq@dialix.oz.au Effects (for 16 Plus): For the EPS 16 PLus, How long have you been waiting for Ensoniq to add some more FX algorithms to the unit? Waveboy industries have released a whole bunch (16) of new FX (yes brand new!) for the EPS 16 Plus. They load straight into the EPS FX chip (ESP chip) from diskette. One of the algorithms is a PITCH SHIFTER that lets you plug a mic into the EPS and use it as a LIVE FX unit. These FX are SIMPLY BRILLIANT!! For more info... Waveboy Industries. EPS and Midi programming: For those of you struggling with the EPS sysex and MIDI while trying to write your own code there is a whole bunch of EPS sysex routines written in turbo-C avaliable for anonymous ftp... AT: louie.udel.edu IN: /pub/midi/software/ibm The files are eps.README (presented below) and eps.tar.Z eps.README... >This is my library of EPS system-exclusive routines. It includes >routines that implement most of the SysEx messages defined in the Ensoniq >Performance Sampler Extern Command Specification. Those messages that are >not implemented can be simulated by using the Virtual Button Press message. >These routines were written in Turbo C, for the IBM PC and MPU-401, >which explains some of the identifiers. However, it should be simple enough >to port them to any other platform. All of the MPU-specific routines >are defined in 'mpu.c' and 'mpu.h'. There is some IBM-specific stuff in >'eps.c' and 'eps.h', too. These four files should be the only ones you >need to modify. > >I've also included 'epsl.lib', a Turbo C large model library, >containing all of this stuff, for those who can use it. > >If you find any bugs, have comments to make, or just want to send >me a line, I can be reached at arensb@kong.gsfc.nasa.gov . ************************ EPS users bug list **************************** How many times have you seen ERROR 144 - REBOOT? What caused it? Well, Richard Hagen is the keeper of the EPS/EPS 16 PLus BUG LIST. So if you have any BUGS to report or you wan't to know if the BUG you have found is a rare and endangered species send email to... richard@cit.gu.edu.au. ************************************************************************ DISCLAIMER: I have nothing to gain by supporting the above groups, I am simply a satisfied customer, trying to help fellow EPS users.
