I'm actually going to upload my disk in the next half hour (I've just written the readme) so I'll post you the info. This is the disk with that Vangelis sound by the way. Oh, incidentally, if you hadn't guessed, this is my answer to the "should we post readme files" question. -------- This is the README file for disk "ajs" stored as "ajs.gkh.Z" A disk of original samples done on the EPS Classic by Andrew Studer These samples are original and are copyright in that others cannot take credit for them nor sell them for profit. Modification and performance is OK. --------- None of these sounds have a lot of programming done on them (patch selects, fancy envelopes etc), being meant more as "resources" for modification (which is how I use them), but many are usable "as is". Analog B 10 The Vangelis "horn" sound. Mod wheel opens the filters, aftertouch increases vibrato slightly, velocity increases detune slightly. Aliases badly in top octave. Originally a D50 triangle wave sample Breathy Str 166 Synthesised loop "pad" from D50 transient sample Flute Str 166 Same again, but a different sample Searing Lead 32 Well, I think it "sears". Classic only (uses loop mod) Radio Noise 32 Good in the octave below middle C. Classic only Nasty Bass 32 Classic only. Actually, these last three sounds use the same sample, but sound quite different. Hiss Pad 59 Classic only. Uses loop mod on a piano sample. Good for big power chords. Widor 169 Synth loop of Widor's "toccata", 1st bar. Atm 167 Ambient + spacey. Play with lotsa reverb Shim Fl 172 Another synth loop pad, this time a real flute Shim Tone 106 And another. Can't remember the "source " sound An Str Mod 106 Nice analog string pad. Mod wheel sweeps filters. Sweet Pad 30 More a dinky "wierd electric piano" sound. Elec Piano 140 Only loosley, but I've found this suprisingly useful The last two layer well on other pianos. There you go. 14 patches. I have done quite a bit of Mirage conversion, and would like to clear up this matter for those who may not know. The way that the EPS converts Mirage sounds is really incomprehensible. It creates _one_ wavesample block of data for the _whole_ Mirage instrument. The other wavesamples are simply references to sections of the first one. Example: "WAVESAMPLE 1" ------------------------------------------------------------------------ | Kick | Snare | Hi-Hat | ... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ^ ^^ ^^ ^ |......WS 1.....||.....WS2........||.....WS3.........| <- references This makes manipulation of the individual wavesamples very difficult. The solution that I have found is to create a blank instrument, and copy each individual wavesample to the new instrument. Then, just Normalize Gain and Truncate the wavesample. Voila! Instant EPS instrument. If you are uploading Mirage-converted sounds, _please_ EPS-ify them first! I didn't care to look at a few images (they didn't look good to me, so I don't think I could give a fair review). They are listed at the end of the review. Somebody please review those (thank you). I tried to put everything in alphabetical, numerical, series, and group (for example both c+c images) order. There may be a mistake or 2, but such is life. How shall we maintain this review as samples accumulate and people have different opinions of sounds? Me, our leader, etc... How about sending a poll around, list all sounds and have people rate them to include general opinion in the review? Please tell me what you think. Thank you! Perhaps if drum 1 and drum 2 were offered as well ...... 592 eps14.gkh.Z EPS Disk 14 - Drs/ El.Bass Strat/Stab Brass Mute Tr./ Good solid sounds. I already had most of them. 456 eps15.gkh EPS Disk 15 - Strings Solo Vln/Pizz Solo Cello/5x Strings Disappointing (don't sound like the instruments, too "keyboardish"). But, I haven't found anything that really does a good job. 560 eps31.gkh.Z EPS Disk 31 Arp Odyssey/Solina/Synth/Moog Ped/Prophet/Reunion'73 CRP Odyssey Good 70's-ish synth sounds ==============================PD SERIES IMAGES================================== 616 pd24.gkh.Z EPS PD Disk 24--Night in Tunisia Great, It was used in the store to help convince me to buy my EPS. 624 pd25.gkh.Z EPS PD Disk 25--Scottish Drums & Seq. I particularly like the big pipe organ. ===================OTHER (MORE DESCRIPTIVE) IMAGES============================== 720 AJS.gkh.Z - Various synth sounds Some better than others. They are good "starter" sounds, sounds to modify into what you want (as the uploader suggested). 728 b3.gkh.Z - Organ Good organ sound 432 bells.gkh.Z - Various bell and other sounds Some of the best bell (Xylophone, etc..) I've heard on the EPS. But, I'm a little biast (I uploaded it). 816 ccdem1.gkh & 784 ccdem2.gkh.Z - C&C Music Factory samples I loved the one with the loops and "Everybody dance now". I didn't care for the other one. I forgot which was which. Great on my EPS. I wonder what I'm missing..... 744 d70#1.gkh.Z and 816 d70#2.gkh Roland D70 Sounds 1 Great emulation of D70 sounds. Some are neat. EPS can produce better, though. 360 fx1fix.gkh.Z - Sound effects 1 (fixed) Good sounds if you need them: car crash, kuku, cartoon sounds, 3 stooges Nicely fixed for the EPS and +16. 728 oboe&eh.gkh.Z - Oboe and English horn The instruments are some of the best emulations I've heard for the EPS, but still aren't quite the real thing. Classical acoustic are really hard to get good samples from. 352 sndfx1.gkh.Z - Sound effects 1 Get fx1fix.gkh.Z instead. It is a better version on the same thing. Delete this from altosax, if possible. (I uploaded it). 672 synclavi.gkh.Z Interesting. Electronic and erie. I suppose I like it. 648 t3-kit1.gkh.Z and 480 t3-kit2.gkh.Z - Korg T3 drum kits 1 & 2 Great, even on my "old" EPS! I wonder what I'm missing.... ================================================================================ I didn't care for the following or didn't download them based upon their descriptions (Somebody else please review these): 744 george.gkh.Z 536 grunguit.gkh.Z 728 hornbass.gkh.Z 568 sickvox.gkh.Z 624 wildhorn.gkh.Z From ads.com!pdel Mon May 18 15:02:52 1992 Return-Path: Received: from 128.229.30.19 by reed.edu (/\==/\ Smail3.1.25.1 #25.21) id ; Mon, 18 May 92 15:01 PDT Received: by saturn.ads.com (5.65+/1.34v1.3) id AA11801; Mon, 18 May 92 15:01:21 -0700 Date: Mon, 18 May 92 15:01:21 -0700 From: pdel@ads.com (Peter Delevoryas) Message-Id: <9205182201.AA11801@saturn.ads.com> To: greenejl@mentor.cc.purdue.edu Subject: Re: Altosax EPS Disk Images REVIEW Cc: eps@reed.edu Hm, I guess some of my uploads were readable after all? Yes, it does, and here are some brief impressions of a few of the disks. T3 KITS These worked on my machine just fine. They sound good, but suffer from the standard workstation problem of all the sounds being too short. Still, some good source sounds, some need resampling with effects. The secret of those Korgs is in the reverb, non? BELLS The tuned percussion on this disk is very good indeed. Worth uploading for these alone. "Vocal pad 1" is, I suspect, a stripped down Classic factory patch. Good sound, but you've probably got it already. Bass is OK but a bit limited DXy sort of thing. D70#2 Four quite good D70 sounds- 2 spacy pads, a flutish thing and a slap bass. D70#1 This one doesn't work: it won't decompress. Can this be fixed please? #2 has got me interested in what's on #1. Can they both be right? The very problem I've been having, since I'm trying to put together a drum map for my EPS to use w/ Band-In-A-Box. I'm leaning toward the General Midi map, since I can fit more Misc. Perc. on a 61-note keyboard. Then I'll put the different instruments, ie., Jazz Snare vs. Rock Snare in different layers, and call up the right layer when the style changes. I mean, why use 4 keys for 4 snares when you can use 1 key and 4 patch selects? But for trading disks, I would think that keeping with the Ensoniq drum map would make sense. Messy wierd sound, interesting tho. Velocity modulates 2 layers loop-x differently and the bass wave remains steady. The C+C SCAT is the do, d, do, do, do, do, do ,do, do vocal scat at the the end of C+C music factories "Gonna Make you sweat". If you have C+C 1 & 2 up and running then you may like this sample to end the song on. 120 BPMS Effect is the one to load up if you want stereo-bouncing at 120 beats per minute...the demo uses it. I mean, why use 4 keys for 4 snares > when you can use 1 key and 4 patch selects? Sorry about the extensive include! I agree with Peter. Scott's idea about sticking to Ensoniq's Map is definitely "standard," as far as the EPS goes. And it's nice for transferring instruments whose purpose is to provide a cornucopia of different drum sounds (e.g. "Choice Drums") it works really well. But for organizing a "standard kit," with cowbells, tambourines, rim shots, agogos, cabasas, etc. etc. The Ensoniq implementation seems limiting. The General MIDI spec, on the other hand, provides specific mappings for over 60 instruments. I propose that we have _two_ standards! How about sticking to the General MIDI spec for actual drum kits, and using the Ensoniq Drum Map for pick-and choose percussion instruments with lots of different kicks/snares/etc.? - Boris (cosmo@cs.ucsb.edu) From rigel.cs.pdx.edu!tauren Tue May 19 10:39:19 1992 Return-Path: Received: from 131.252.20.103 by reed.edu (/\==/\ Smail3.1.25.1 #25.21) id ; Tue, 19 May 92 10:39 PDT Received: from rigel.cs.pdx.edu by pdxgate.cs.pdx.edu (4.1/pdx-gateway-evision: 1.27 id AA14699; Tue, 19 May 92 10:39:00 PDT Received: from rigel.cs.pdx.edu by rigel.cs.pdx.edu (4.1/pdx-client-evision: 1.17 id AA14463; Tue, 19 May 92 10:38:57 PDT Message-Id: <9205191738.AA14463@rigel.cs.pdx.edu> To: eps@reed.edu Subject: Re: Loop X bass demo thingy In-Reply-To: Your message of Tue, 19 May 92 14:09:13 +0800. <9205190609.AA22929@wapsy.psy.uwa.oz.au> Date: Tue, 19 May 92 10:38:56 PDT From: tauren@rigel.cs.pdx.edu In message <9205190609.AA22929@wapsy.psy.uwa.oz.au> you write: >This disk contains... > >Effects >----------------------- >120 BPMS: 3 blocks EPS16 Plus ONLY > Is this the same effect that came on disk ED-49 (I think) from Ensoniq? Hey all, Thanks to all who've contributed to altosax.reed, I love those samples! I'm getting ready a set of my own that are from my Sequential Multitrak and random noise-type sounds. I was wondering, however, has anyone had any problems with getting a few of the disks to work? Specifically, I can't get either d70 disks, EPS14, EPS31, and that disk with the M1 drum kit. All others are great. What generally happens is that I can uncompress one, epswrite it, and even get a directory on it on my 16+, but when I try to load, it would crash. Specifically, on EPS31 (the 70's synth set), I can load ARP ODDESSY and SOLINA, but my EPS locks up on the rest (SYNTH MEMORY, MOOG LEAD, etc) Could someone take fresh disks, epsread them, compress them, and re-submit them (or am I the only one having this problem?) The only thing that has been changed is the Left and Right delay times to get it to sync at 120 BPM. I can't see how this is copyright-able. The formala to convert BPM to delay times is... 60,000/BPM = 1/4th note sync 60,000/2*BPM = 1/8th note sync 60,000/4*BPM = 1/16th note sync You can work out the rest from there..o So if you want left right delays at 120 BPM = Left at 500 ms Right at 250 ms Add lots of 125 ms to offset a delay by 16th notes... You are copying and distributing copyright material and this I believe is illegal. There may be exceptions for only copying small portions of a work, in which case it could be legal. On the other hand, I doubt anyone would chase you over it. What would be the point, your not making any money out of it and it's not robbing them of any income. > If there are newsgroups dedicated to uploading images of 'famous' > paintings, then how is sound-byte uploading illegal. Drawing parrallels in the case of legal arguement is rarely all that wise. A famous painting occurs only has one instance, while a soundtrack can be duplicated without being able to tell the difference from the original. This means in the context of sound, you may be able to compete for a market share. This is really what copyright holders are trying to protect. I think this final point is the most important. > Now when it comes time to pressing an album to sell with those > bytes, then you might want to contact someone like a lawyer. This should be a general warning for everyone. Where a sample is from copyrighted material, you may get into legal problems if you don't pay some royalty to the owner of the sound. Remember, they did invest money to produce it and you haven't payed for the right to use it. (This is as opposed to using Ensoniq sounds etc that I believe you have a right to use.) Moral: 1) If you're going to make money out of a particular sound, talk to a lawyer. 2) You're better to be cautious and err on the side of safety. Ideas are not owned, copyright seeks to prevent or curb ideas and thought, principally under the banner of protecting some ones royalties. Sampling a sound track in such small parts is not intended to compete with the all-important sales of the 'product', it is to be used as a valid source of musical expression. A good essay on the copyright issue is Oswalds 'Neither a Borrower or Sampler Prosecute' KEYBOARD Mar '88. The problem is we have no equivalent to audio quote marks. If I write an academic paper, I can quote my sources and everyone is happy. In music, it is a case of pay, pay, pay. Talk about 'Industrial' music (created and controlled by the music 'Industry'). Did Schaeffer and Henry pay royalties to the publishers of the sound effect records they used to create their Musique Concrete in 1948? If they had been worried about the legal implications of such, would sampling keyboards exist nowdays? Would electronic music have developed? >Remember, they did >invest money to produce it and you haven't payed for the right to use it. >(This is as opposed to using Ensoniq sounds etc that I believe you have >a right to use.) > >Moral: >1) If you're going to make money out of a particular sound, talk to a lawyer. >2) You're better to be cautious and err on the side of safety. > Will all the multi-million dollar pop stars and sound producers please send me mail! I'm sure most of us aspire to be professionals but unless I'm greatly mistaken, I think most of the readership are doing this for enjoyment and knowledge first and profit second. My one-sided and fairly extreme view is: Let the machinery of the big music/entertainment industry go it's own way, lets concentrate on creating music by collective means (i.e the process of this mailing list and sound swapping). They have bigger pirates to worry about, we should be worrying about producing intelligent and exciting music, not law. I don't disagree with the first moral given above but I fear the limitations to what this group can achieve by following the second. I guess to avoid the host system and institution being implicated, people could directly swap files by mail, and just post where to get the files from. Undoubtly this will provoke comment, apologies for the bandwidth.
