I am not an EPS owner (sigh), but have several friends with them. I have more than once tried to download samples from altosax to transfer them, but without success. I have at my disposal PCs of some description (I don't know much about them, and have rigorously avoided changing that), and have downloaded the epsread/epswrite prgrams, but they don't seem to do anything other than hang the machines. It is of course quite possible that I am not using them correctly. Can someone please show in gory detail how to get samples from the .gkh files that one downloads, to a disk that I can shove into an EPS? Hi Eric/Jane...here's something for the INTERFACE...if you cant reproduce the ascii graphics just edit them out. Greetings TH, CS and Hackers One of the exciting things about the EPS 16 Plus is its FX chip (ESP chip) is that it's driven by software loaded from floppy. Bill Mauchly has taken advantage of this with the release of WaveBoy's "Parallel Effects Disk 1.0". Craig Andertons review of the PED-1 was great to see. Unfortunately Craig was too early to review another algorithm that WaveBoy have released and that is a PITCH SHIFTER. Having struggled to get the EPS to do this in my article in TH #79 it was of special interest to see this capability implemented (properly) in the FX chip. WaveBoys pitch-shifter is great. You can transpose +/- 36 semitones with a minimum resolution of 1 cent. Pitch shift amount may be fixed or modulated by the keyboard. The input to the pitch shifter can come from the internal samples, or CHECK THIS OUT the "audio-in" jack on the back of the EPS 16 Plus. Exciting times we live in. I'd hope to see all the FX with this capability at some stage in the future. You have considerable low-level control over all the major insides/parts of the algorithm. The pitch shifter path, I had to work out as it's not shown in the manual, here's what I think's going on... -----------(Dry amount)-------- | | | v IN----PITCHSHIFTER----DELAY-----REVERB----->Stereo out ^ | | | |--<-(Feed-back)---- Note the pitch-shifted signal can be delayed and fed back into the input of the pitch-shifter, great for spiralling UP/DOWN pitch effects. At the risk of sounding like I have shares in WaveBoy (which I don't) I can't rave enough about the PED-1 (which now comes with the pitch shifter as a bonus). Second only to TH on the "essential accessory list" for the EPS. Do it now buy buy it. One thing I would like to see is Bill Mauchly or someone else at Ensoniq write a series of articles on the ESP chip similar to those of Gary Gieblers on the Ensoniq disk format. Gary's articles have been the inspiration for a number of software projects that I know are now underway in the 3rd party domain (watch TH for further info...) At the risk of creating competition for himself how about Bill releasing a ESP chip "Developers Kit" so we all can have a go at programming FX. Presently there are a few people around looking at the the code for the FX that is stored on floppies...a long slow process. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Scott Fisher [scott@wapsy.uwa.oz] PH: Aus [61] Perth (09) Local (380 3574). _--_|\ N Department of Psychology / \ W + E University of Western Australia. It was pretty good all in all. The sales rep showed the SD-1, SQ-x, EPS-16, and yes, the DP-4. Of course he only spent about 5 minutes on the DP-4. Grrrr. That looks like a very very nice machine. Way out of my price range (list $1495), when you think about what you get, it is cost-effective. Anyway, at the end of the presentation he told us that Ensoniq also makes hearing aids (seems like I heard that before). He said this shows that the company has long term goals, namely: "We make you deaf and then we sell you your hearing back" :-) Actually, the hearing aid he described was pretty cool. He said it consists of a parametric EQ which is tuned to your ear at the doctor's office. This way you zero in on the specific frequencies you've lost. Let's see if I can remember some of the other tidbits: - SQ/SD series now has 32 voices vs. 21. - EPS-16 will *not* be upgrade to 32 voices due to lack of processing power. - The acoustic grand they developed with Bose was discontinued because they didn't know how to market it properly. - Ensoniq is now the US distributor for Notator by C-Lab(?). That's about it. I must say that the Ensoniq demos are pretty fun to listen to. As usual, the one thing that escapes a lot of people is the fact that they guy playing the keys knows how to play. Even more than that, he knows how to play the patches. There's a multi-sample sax patch on the SD-1 that's got slides and growls and this guy could almost make you believe he's got a real sax up there. It was fun. NOTE that only PUBLIC-DOMAIN samples/sequences are to be uploaded to this site. Violations of this request may cause the closure of the site and possibly copyright action. Files stored in the /pub/samples directory are EPS disk-images created with the freeware "epsread" and "epswrite" utilities running under the MS-DOS operating system. These files are MS-DOS binaries. Most of the files in this directory (the ones ending in .Z) have been compressed with the standard unix "compress" command. In order to upload/download sounds to this site, you need at least the following... A) FTP direct or FTP mail access. B) A PC, Mac, Atari or Unix system with a 3.5" floppy disk drive. C) The appropriate conversion utility for your computer system. PC = epsread.exe, epswrite.exe ... /pub/util Mac = Under Development ... /pub/util Atari = disk-wizard ... /pub/util The rest of these instructions make two assumptions: that you're using an MS-DOS personal computer to create image files of EPS disks, and that you're using a unix-based computer to transfer the files to altosax.reed.edu. Atari PC users can use the appropriate utility in place of "epsread" and "epswrite", and Macintosh users can either borrow an MS-DOS (or Atari) machine, or wait patiently until a Macintosh utility program is available. If your only access to the Internet is through a VMS system, check with your local support guru for instructions on how to get your EPS image files from the VMS computer to altosax.reed.edu. IMPORTANT NOTE: File-transfer software for most computers allows the user to choose different transfer modes for different types of files. Two modes are usually supported: "text" for plain text files, and "binary" for binary files. Without going into further detail, please remember this: ALWAYS TRANSFER FILES IN BINARY MODE! ======================= (2) How to upload a sample file ================= So, let's say you want to share your carefully-crafted drum kit with the rest of the Internet.... * Insert the EPS floppy disk into your personal computer. * Run "epsread.exe" and save the image file to your hard disk. * If your PC is on a local area network and has a fixed IP address, you may be able to ftp your EPS image file directly to altosax.reed.edu (again, ask your local network support person if you're not sure). * Otherwise, first transfer (via network or modem) the image file (in BINARY mode) to the machine that allows you to access the Internet. Then use the unix "compress" program to compress the file (again, ask your local support person if you need help with this). * Finally, use the ftp program to connect to altosax.reed.edu. When prompted for a name, type "anonymous"; when prompted for a password, type your email address. Once you're connected, make sure your transfer software is in "binary" mode (see above) and change directory to /pub/incoming (this is the only directory in which guests have permission to put files). Then use the "put" command to upload the file to altosax. Here's a transcript of a typical unix ftp session, wherein the anonymous user uploads the file "grunguit.gkh.Z": % ftp altosax.reed.edu Connected to altosax.reed.edu. 220 altosax FTP server (Version 5.20 (NeXT 1.0) Sun Nov 11, 1990) ready. For example, the file "grunguit.gkh.Z" contains EPS instruments based on heavily processed ("grungy") guitars, "tek-perc.gkh.Z" conatians hi-tech drum and percussion sounds. The filenames have the extension ".gkh" because they were created with the epsread/epswrite utilities (the author's name is Goh King Hwa, his efforts are most appreciated!). Files ending in ".Z" have been compressed with the standard UNIX "compress" command. Some files on altosax.reed.edu lack the .Z extension because "compress" could not significantly reduce their size. ======================== (5) Documentation ================================ When you upload a sample file, we ask that you include a short text file describing your sample file. These files should be named "filename.txt" (where "filename" is also the name of your sample file); they will be moved into the /pub/docs directory. It's possible to view the contents of a text file from within the UNIX ftp program, so you don't have to download the file, exit ftp, and then read it. To view a file on your terminal from within the ftp program, add " -" to the end of the "get" command, as in this example: ftp> get tek-perc.txt - We ask that you PLEASE use the following template for your readme files, including the name of each EPS instrument, size in disk blocks, type of sound (e.g., synth, strings, drums, etc.), and a brief description: ------------------------------- cut here ---------------------------------- EPS DISK IMAGE FILE ------------------------------ Sent by: |-------------------------------------------------------------------- --------| |Name |Size|Type |Description | |-------------------------------------------------------------------- --------| ----------------------------- end of template ------------------------------- ============================ finally... ===================================== Thanks for taking the time to read through this document. I am not sure if doing this somehow invalidates any 'low level' HD format, thereby preventing the disks from being reused as HD disks in the future. Why would you want to do this, since HD disks are cheaper? Unless of course, you have a cheap/free supply of HD disks (wink wink, nudge nudge, say n'more!). Does anyone have a flash bank? How are they? The local store sells 'em for around $250 I think. It would be nice to boot from one, if this is possible... Planned improvements include: - more functions. I left out about half of the calls for various reasons, including laziness and boredom. I plan on adding some of those. - general cleanup. The loop offset stuff, in particular, is pretty ugly. And I'd like to remove some of the PC dependencies. - Amiga port. This is necessary, since I no longer have a PC. I do plan on keeping the PC stuff, though; in fact, I'd like to make this as portable as possible. - examples. Several people have complained that they couldn't use my code, for lack of examples. They have a valid point. Anyway, what I'd like to request from you (especially those who have used this stuff in the past) is to tell me what you'd like to see, above and beyond what I've already listed. In addition, if you have any code that you'd like to contribute, now is the time. I'm offering you the sterling opportunity to *** SEE YOUR NAME IN GLOWING PHOSPHORUS! *** This often-in-a-lifetime opportunity is limited (by how big I'm willing to let the README file grow), so hurry! In particular, I'd like to know if any SysEx calls have been added for the EPS 16+, and if so, how they are called, and so forth. If you have ported this library to another platform, I'd like to include your code in this release. And if you have any utilities to contribute, they will be well received (I said I needed examples). -- Andrew Arensburger | "Anyway, it never gets cold on Earth. I own an older EPS (albeit with a 4x expander); will samples developed on the newer box play on my machine? If they will not, then I suggest noting in the text files which instruments are only the realm of the 16. That way, those of us with EPS only will not waste network time moving the samples down. Oh, while I am at it, another question. What is the latest operating system for the EPS; I think I am running 1.1 (thats not for EPS16 either). What will I gain by upgrading to the latest system, and will I have to reinstall all of my sound banks under the new system? Thanks. The transfer rate seem to fall off exponentially with time. At the end of a ~800K transfer it may around 2.5 minutes between packets recieved for a transfer between Norway and USA. Although my own connection to altosax.reed.edu is much better than that. Some instruments can have a relatively small size, and it also seems quite common that there are several instruments on a disk. It could perhaps be an idea that some of the people uploading instruments used single instruments. Particularly if there is no other reason for several instruments than to fill up the diskette. Some good instruments can be quite small. Those with slow connection could benefit from this. Terje ---------- --------- Terje G. I'm a bit lost here: people are asking if we can distinguish between Classic and 16+ samples at altosax. Jacque Bussey is worried about Classic users downloading 16+ samples that don't work, however in terms of sounds, I've had no problems. So, the "ccdemo" disks Scott uploaded have working sounds, just the sequences don't work (the Classic doesn't "see" them). Is there a problem with the reverse direction (Classic samples not working on the 16+)? For those who were asking, I'll try to get my stuff (Vangelis horn etc) uploaded by Wednesday this week. All of these will be original. Oh yes, that's right. I CAN see one area where there might be problems: the loop modulation function is inconsistent between the two versions: I've got some not bad "wavesequency" type things that just don't work on the 16+.
