Ha! Aftertough is not the word...does anyone else out there find that the amount of pressure needed to get the aftertouch to kick in is a little on the excessive side? I'm a little "delicate" in the wrists and fingers it's true, however when I set the [command][system] to SOFT 4 (or is it 1?, well the most sensitive aftertouch setting anyway) my EPS 16 Plus starts creaking , bending and groaning under the pressure I need to apply. When you are using chords it's almost impossible. One thing I have noticed tho, if you press in the "middle" of the keys (black and white) you don't need as much pressure, although it's still "too much" for my tastes. I think this is so because the inductor coil/plate is in the middle of the keys and pressing on the ends causes the key to flex/bend (bannana fassion) around the pivotal inductor plate thingy. Any one else have the same prob? Aftertouch HA! After-TOUGH more like it. At first I thought it was a result of some inept programming of mine, but numerous checks of the appropriate parameters said that I should be able to get some modulation. I've found that if I lean into it with most of my weight (don't worry I'm small) I can get some effect. Needless to say, this does not lend itself well to playing nice fluid passages, besides the fact that one of these days the a-frame I've got my board on is going to submit while I'm applying some aftertouch and send my board crashing to the ground. As a result I've given up using aftertouch as a reliable modulator. By the way, seeing as this newsletter is about samplers, I was wondering if anyone knew anything about the Emu Emax. I love the 16+'s architecture, but the 2 megs of memory I'm limited too makes me yearn for more. In my case the Flashbank wouldn't be muh help since I seldom use a sound more than once or twice. Anyone knowledgeable abuot Emu out there? First of all the problem: I have been trying for a while to send a load-bank command to my EPS16+ module from MasterTrax Pro for Windows on my PC. The program has no problem sending any of the program changes, but the EPS doesn't respond to the number that corrosponds to the bank (according to the formula - one less or one more or whatever it's supposed to be). I'm just not too keen on the idea of having to send seperate load-instrument commands, volumes, FX, pans etc. O.K. now for the questions, Can anyone explain exactly how the KBD modulator works. I've found it really useful for making the filter on my distorted guitar sound open and close following the beat, but I can't work out how it does it. The manual says something fairly vague. The other question is whether any of you know of anything useful you can use the transwave and X thingy for. It makes some really nice supersonic frequencies and assorted fruit bat sounds that dog really likes, but I've got a hunch that that was not really what the designers at Ensoniq really had in mind. Can anyone enlighten me?? Hi, So the a question about transwaves (I think) came up and I had a few of my own. First, what produces interesting sound (noise) when used with the Transwaves options, i.e. what have any of you sampled and used with the Transwaves to produce interesting results? I realize that the wave should have changing harmonic content, but have yet to find anything that gives anything inspiring when used with the Transwaves. I even sampled some of the actual Transwaves from an SQ-R, but am having trouble reproducing the sounds my SQ-R gave me. Any tips or suggestions for programming the Transwaves option? I'd also be interested in hearing what any of you have done with the other sample loop modulation schemes. Second, does anyone know of a good instrument editor for the EPS-16+ (or SQ-R)? Public Domain would be a plus, but if it's a good product I wouldn't mind spending some cash on it. Dumping sample data back and forth is not so important as being able to see all the parameters from a page or set of pages at once. Any info would be appreciated. Mmmmm, well consider the lowest note to = 1 and the highest to = 61 and you have the basis of the nature of KBD as a modulator. KBD just uses note number as the source for modulation. The reason I "suspect" that your guitar filters opened up on the "beat" is because whatever you are playing covers a reasonably large keyboard range in time with the beat. KBD is most often used to do things like get LP filters to shut down more as you go "up" the keyboard to stop the "shrill" sound of an over-stretched sample or conversely shut down a LP filter the lower you transpose to block out aliasing or other noisy grunge. However as with most modulators the best uses are often the least obvious, experiment :-) >The other question is whether any of you know of >anything useful you can use the transwave and X thingy for. Can anyone enlighten me?? I suspect the people at Ensoniq will (one day) release a set of "proper" transwave tables. You can make your own transwave tables by simply splicing together a bunch of short (prefferably single-cycle loop) samples all of exactly the same length. Time to fire up the commands under the [command][LFO] page :-) The "X thingy" does a time-stretch (effectively) on the loop so that as the loop gets longer (modulates loop end point [i think?]) the pitch stays the same. It only "really" works on short loops. However, that does not mean that you can't abuse it and make interesting sounds :-) I would be interested to see what Ensoniq do with this loop-type too. *** Subject: Error 144 and HDs that DON'T work *** ????? writes: (sorry) >I ALWAYS get the dreaded Error 144 whenever I go to open a new file in >StudioVision or if I switch applications (I'm running System 7)... Actually I have had some great success producing my "own" slowly changing wavetable by making "aaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwwrwrrrrrrrrrreeeeeeeeeeeek" sounds with my mouth and sampling it. If you keep the pitch constant and only vary your vowel/consonant sounds this can make a fairly good wavetable for the Transwave thingy to work on. >I even sampled some of the actual Transwaves from an SQ-R, but am having >trouble reproducing the sounds my SQ-R gave me. Anyone got any thoughts? richard From psy.uwa.oz.au!scott Thu Feb 6 21:00:22 1992 Return-Path: Received: by reed.edu (/\==/\ Smail3.1.25.1 #25.10) id ; Thu, 6 Feb 92 20:59 PST Received: by wapsy.psy.uwa.oz.au (5.61+IDA+MU) id AA22404; Fri, 7 Feb 1992 13:58:22 +0800 Date: Fri, 7 Feb 1992 13:58:22 +0800 From: scott@psy.uwa.oz.au (Scott Fisher) Message-Id: <9202070558.AA22404@wapsy.psy.uwa.oz.au> To: eps@reed.edu OK...Strange observation time. Symptom/Observations: High frequencies (most likely aliasing and or "look-up table" noise) cut out sequentially with each time around the loop. This goes on for 3-5 loops then cuts back to full-hiss/noise and the phenomenon repeats. This sounds just like turning the treble down a notch each time around the loop for 3-5 loops then turning it up again and starting over. If you fiddle with the loop-START or END parameters (positions) you can change the number of loops it takes to reach maximum "dullness" and go to "bright" again. With regard to the key to play back the sample you will find in 20 voice mode that a 7th down from the root key is the noisiest in terms of aliasing/table-look-up/quantizing noise. Conditions: The above appears to only occur on the key a 7th below the root or "unity-playback". AND only in 20 voice mode. I have double checked and the filters are both LP at 150. All filter modulators are off and the envelope is "FULL ON". The fact that you can change the voice mode or the playback key (from -7th) and the phenomenon does not occur precludes the filters anyway. It is easiest to hear this if you sample a sound with lots of high frequencies (try: sampling a tape recording with the noise reduction OFF so there is plenty of hiss mixed with the sound). Summary: Phenomenon occurs when... (Loop Forward ON) + (20 Voice mode) + (Playback key of -7th from root). Use headphones and turn up the treble on the Amp (if you are using one) to accentuate the phenomenon. My Theory: For those of you who don't know the EPS family transpose pitch by adding and deleting samples rather than mucking around with the clock playback rate. The EPS uses something called a "look-up" table do decide which samples to throw away or add to, this process introduces its own distortions (high frequency grunge). I suspect that the above conditions do something to the way the look-up table is being used and this alters the amount of "look-up table" noise in the sample, just like it is stepping through a series of alternative tables??? thus the high frequency noise changes slowly each time the look-up table is used. Any ideas??????? It has the 2x memory expansion. My problem is that in once of my sequences, I have 5 track of sampled drums and stuff, then on another two tracks I have a a grand piano. When I bring in the first piano track, everything if fine. When I bring in the second track, the other tracks seem to drop in and out (stop playing and start again). The do drop in and out on beat somewhat but It VERY disturbing. I have it set to 20 voices in the system. Is there something I need to set? Something wrong with my EPS or am I stretching the limits too far by trying to play too many notes at once? To: eps@reed.edu Date: Fri, 7 Feb 92 14:41:05 PST X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.3 PL8] How does the EPS use velocity numbers to determine timbre? When adjusted to be sensitive enough for my playing technique, my Midi guitar sends high velocity numbers. The EPS responds by producing timbres with lots of attack, which is not usually desireable to me. Samples such as flute and horn come out with too much attack even when i play legato. I've looked at the patches and deleted any wavesamples that are triggered only by high velocity, and the problem continues. Apparently a filter or envelope is responsible, but I can't find it. The manuals weren't much help, and I couldn't find any evidence in the display that velocity was assigned to filters or layers. Since I can't scale down the velocity from my guitar without sacrificing response, I must learn how to make the EPS treat velocities >64 as 64 as far as timbre is concerned. As you can tell, I'm fairly new to tweaking sample data, so any advice will be very welcomed. Check your samples, find out how many layers the piano and the drums are using. Then you can easily figure out how many keys you can press at the same time without getting dropouts. One way to avoid this is to look at which layers are totally necessary, and which might be more "filler". For example, I have a piano sound that eats up tons of layers, in fact one layer is dedicated entirely to the sound of the hammer hitting the strings. While this is a great nuance to have for a piano solo, I'm sure it doesn't contribute much in a mix with drums and other instruments. I could easily turn off that layer, and buy back another voice. I can't remember if the EPS lets you assign priorities to the different layers like the VFX-SD does, but if it does you can assign a lower priority to the voices you want to get swapped out first, and accomplish the same sort of thing. If you don't want to loose any of the layers, you could also resample the final output into one layer, although this would involve two EPS's, and you would lose a lot of real-time control over the sample. Hope this helps some... =============================================================================== /\ | / / \ | /\ Kelly Larson /\ / \ /\ | / / \ | /\/ kdl@hpeskdl.fc.hp.com / \/ \ \/\| | /-\ /-\ | |\/ \ Engineering Systems Lab / / \ / | | / / /__/ | |/ \/ Hewlett Packard Company / / / | \ / / | \ / COLORADO! / | \ / / | =============================================================================== From xerox.com!Craig_S._Aubert.LAX1B Fri Feb 7 15:05:06 1992 Return-Path: Received: by reed.edu (/\==/\ Smail3.1.25.1 #25.10) id ; Fri, 7 Feb 92 15:04 PST Received: from LAX1B_Mail_Service_7.LAX1B.Xerox.xns by alpha.xerox.com via XNS id <11746>; Fri, 7 Feb 1992 15:04:36 PST X-NS-Transport-ID: 0000AA0098D33E892D4C Date: Fri, 7 Feb 1992 15:04:25 PST Sender: Craig_S._Aubert.LAX1B@xerox.com From: CAubert.LAX1B@xerox.com Subject: MIDI Controller To: eps@reed.edu Message-ID: <" 7-Feb-92 15:04:25 PST".*.Craig_S._Aubert.LAX1B@Xerox.com> Hi, Guitar / ESP16+ Players...if any Can you help me with some possible selections of guitar midi controllers that may best be used with the EPS16+ as mentioned in the EPS16+ manual? It was nice because it let you install it in your own existing guitar, unlike the old Roland guitar controllers, and I think the current Yamaha controllers. He played around with it a little bit, and it seemed to track just fine. It looked like a lot of fun, I can't remember what the model was though. =============================================================================== /\ | / / \ | /\ Kelly Larson /\ / \ /\ | / / \ | /\/ kdl@hpeskdl.fc.hp.com / \/ \ \/\| | /-\ /-\ | |\/ \ Engineering Systems Lab / / \ / | | / / /__/ | |/ \/ Hewlett Packard Company / / / | \ / / | \ / COLORADO! / | \ / / | =============================================================================== From compuserve.com!73260.3353 Fri Feb 7 20:40:28 1992 Return-Path: <73260.3353@compuserve.com> Received: by reed.edu (/\==/\ Smail3.1.25.1 #25.10) id ; Fri, 7 Feb 92 20:40 PST Received: by ihb.compuserve.com (5.65/5.910516) id AA14543; Fri, 7 Feb 92 23:40:06 -0500 Date: 07 Feb 92 23:05:08 EST From: Eric Geislinger <73260.3353@CompuServe.COM> To: Subject: Transoniq/net Message-Id: <920208040508_73260.3353_EHJ53-3@CompuServe.COM> Yikes!
