The rumor was that the DP/4 (Multi-digital effects box) was going to be there -- It wasn't. The area rep said the offical statement was "The DP/4 would not be available until February of 1992 due to a delay in one of their vendors." The rest of the clinic was about the same as the clinic I saw last January. BTW: they did give out some nice new 'Ensoniq' BVD T-shirts with a new colorful artsy keyboard design on the front. The Rep had some new EPS16 Plus demos which were great. One was done by a guy in Finland which had a great Strat guitar sound. The other was done by a guy in California (I forgot his name..) who had done many of the good Ensoniq demos in the past. The demo began with some 'Village People' sounding music, and about the time you think to yourself "He's got to be kidding!" the music stopped, and was followed by a quick "JUST KIDDING!" sample, and then an intensely wild, rockish sounding demo sequence. It was good enough to make me think seriously about selling off my EPS and buying an EPS16 plus -- just so I could load that demo sequence! Just to be totally clear the SW-1/SW-2 is that plastic boxy thing with a lead comming out of it ending in a phono jack. Well the manual notes it can do the following... Act as a SUSTAIN. Act as a right hand PATCH SELECT button. It also ... I found out a couple of weeks ago can start/stop sampling. press [SAMPLE] and answer [YES] to "create new instrument"? When you press down on the SW-1 nothing will happen but RELEASE it and sampling starts. Pressing down again stops sampling. Is this mentioned ANYWHERE in the EPS or EPS 16 Plus manual. BTW: You don't need to buy the SW-5 if you want to take advantage of the AUX foot switch. If you examine the SW-5 (2 pedal model) it has a STEREO phono jack. Symptoms include: all notes on transmitted through midi; from that point the keyboard is locked up; pressing the enter, scroll, inst. or any other button may or may not produce garbage characters on the display; I'll power down then back up with the O.S. in the drive and after the POST when it says tuning keyboard instead of saying keyboard tuned it says "keyboard failed - try again?". This happened to me a few weeks back in a club where I'd had power problems before. I was able to solve it at that time (after several reboots) by pointing a fan at the cooling fins and running an extension cord to a seperate outlet. The EPS worked fine for the rest of the night. Now two weeks later I'm working at home in the studio and the same thing happens to me twice in a row. I haven't added anything new to load down the power so there must be something wrong with the EPS. Any ideas? The local music store says the original EPS requires the keyboard to be calibrated after so many hundreds of hours of use, something about the flux or solder. So I put it to the net: Anybody know of such problems? P.S. The bad news is I'll be without my keyboard for a week. The good news is I'll be forced to try the EPS-16+ this weekend. Some call it C0, others C-2, and so forth. It's just something you're going to have to live with. There may be a MIDI standard lowest keyboard, but this information is somewhat less reliable than wild rumor. /AA/ :::::::::::::: eps/8 :::::::::::::: Return-Path: Received: by romulus.reed.edu (/\==/\ Smail3.1.22.1 #22.20) id ; Fri, 15 Nov 91 22:10 PST Received: by intelhf.hf.intel.com (/\=-/\ Smail3.1.17.5 #17.19); Fri, 15 Nov 91 20:04 PST Received: from uunet.uu.net (via LOCALHOST.UU.NET) by relay2.UU.NET with SMTP (5.61/UUNET-internet-primary) id AA01158; Fri, 15 Nov 91 23:02:23 -0500 Received: from mdcbbs.UUCP by uunet.uu.net with UUCP/RMAIL (queueing-rmail) id 230110.28833; Fri, 15 Nov 1991 23:01:10 EST Received: by MDCBBS.COM with UUCP/PMDF (DECUS UUCP); Fri, 15 Nov 1991 13:51 PST Received: from DECNET-MAIL by MDCBBS.COM with PMDF#10000; Fri, 15 Nov 1991 13:51 PST Date: Fri, 15 Nov 1991 13:51 PST From: "Steve Pirk...Plotter Development..x5516" Subject: Why wait for Ensoniq? To: intelhf!reed!eps Message-Id: X-Envelope-To: uunet!intelhf!reed!eps X-Vms-To: BBS::IN%"intelhf!reed!eps@uunet" X-Vms-Cc: PIRK I have noticed considerable comments on the failings of the EPS. When I talked to the people that supplied me with my 4x expander w/scsi, the comment was made that the power supply has always been marginal. Addding extra memory and the scsi chip has caused me to consider waiting 20 or so minutes before putting the plastic cover over the keyboard after use. (it gets that hot....) What are the chances that we as a group can come up with the nessesary stuff to look at the problem ouselves. If Ensoniq admits that the supply cannot handle the power drain, just think how many "post" warranty fixes they may be liable for? I am going to make a concerted effort to open the beast back up this weekend and maybe put a meter on the outputs of the supply to see if it drifts enough to cause a crash. Another idea is to check and see if the power supply for the EPS16 is any more robust, and see if a deal can be worked out with Ensoniq. (a guy can wish can't he?). On a final note (thats what crashed it last time...), has anyone out there thought of forwarding all these notes to Ensoniq? We may not be many, but this is only a sample (sic) of users that have net access. p.s. Is anyone really receiving these mailings? SL-1 "Hi-Fi Kits" (5 disks of 44.6 kHz sampled drum sounds, one disk has just crash, h-hat etc noises on it, makes for some looong decays on the crash, you will need 4X EPS, 2X 16 Plus memory to load up a full kit + brass clangy things (cymbals)) SL-2 "Basses, electric and Synth" (5 disks, 3 are electric basses i.e fender etc, 1300 block monsters. 2 disks are Moog basses must-have sounds aka moog bass on the disks that come with the EPS 16 Plus. SL-3 "Rock vocals, male" (5 disks...still waiting for them, can't tell you anything, anyone else got these?) SL-4 "Pianos" <--unsure of title (5 disks of "great" piano sounds, better IMHO than the two that came with the 16 Plus. Steinway 2 3010 blocks, small version 735 blocks. Bosendorfr 2 2806 Blocks sml bose 2 777 blocks....and that fills 5 disks :-) SL-5 "more pianos??" I'm still waiting for it...I've ordered it and have forgotten what it was... SL-6 "Brass" (5 disks of trumpet and trombone sounds. What can I say... They sound "good". I played trombone for 9 years (given it up in favour of samplers) and I am happy with the brass on this disk. I recon that brass has always been one of the easiest sounds to sample. SL-7 "Drum-loops" (5 disks of more than just drum loops...I think this is the waaaaayyyy cooolest sounds that I have yet heard comming from my EPS. It's all in the hip-hop, house, acid, rap style, loops are designed to be easily sync'd to any bpm. These are a must for acid/house hip-hop etc etc fans, the kits are there too so you can make up your own loops. There are some cool bass, FX and "hits" there too. Well that's all I have at the mo, I'll let you know whats on SL-3 and 5 when I get them. Sometimes the OS can get a little corrupted/flakey on the disk and this can lead to unpredictable results. As to how often this occurs? Well in my 3 years with EPS's I have seen an corrupt OS about twice. The symptoms are similar to what you describe. This is a _ton_ of storage. Caveats: Expensive hardware Non Writeable (Read Only - Thats what the ROM means ;-) ) Several different standards (High Sierra etc) of data disks Disks (software) may be limited SLOW access times (may not be best for live performances) Plusses: Mucho blocks of data to play with The MEDIA is actually cheap to produce (typically $2.00 per) If one standard is developed and adheared to, the software will be reasonably priced. Second: CDROMs typically have Audio Outputs. This enables them to be used as audio sources for sample transfer. This is a pure AUDIO transfer not a block data transfer as outlined above. Disks such as the McGill University sample set come to mind. I don't know what Ensoniq plans to do, but I'll be it will be both interesting and expensive! Moving samples via MIDI is slow, but it does work. 2) CD-ROM sample libraries are relatively inexpensive compared to floppy-based libraries. Of course, there _is_ a bit of a hardware investment involved, even if one already owns a computer. 3) more sample libraries are becoming available, at least on the Mac, because of Digidesign's hardware (SampleCell, SoundTools, AudioMedia). One doesn't need the fancy sampling cards or a MacII to take advantage of these libraries, if you have Alchemy or TurboSynth or another software program which can send files to your sampler. (i use CD-ROMS with my humble MacPlus, and my SCSI-less EPS.) Now for the advertisement: One of the CD-ROMS currently distributed by Digidesign is called "A Poke in the Ear With a Sharp Stick", 600 MB of "alternative" samples, and is worth considering for a number of reasons. One such reason is that i contributed around 40 megs of bizarre guitar and vocal sounds ;-) Another reason for looking at (listening to?) "Poke" is that the profits are shared equally among the contributors. The most important (we believe) reason is that all the sounds are, in our collective mind, the kind that simply aren't available in other commercial libraries (e.g., "Martian Weaselphone" and those incriminating "Famous Brand Political Quotations"). Our motto for this project (we're already assembling volume 2) is "no french horns". Digidesign sells "Poke" for approximately $150 US, but interested parties can contact me directly for a much better price. I have had no feedback on anything I have posted for ages. If you saved my review of the Ensoniq libary sounds there are some questions I asked there that I have not heard from anyone about...enough complaining, on with the review... Drum machines were mastered direct to DAT then transferred direct to CD. There are 30 drum machines sampled. All the internal sounds and any extra sounds that the makers could get their hands on (from cards, eproms e.t.c) were recorded off each machine. The sound quality is as good as the original, after all it is a DAT recording off the machines. About 3 or 4 of the 700 + sounds appear to have been clipped in the recording process, it could be the machines tho. The only hiss you hear is from the drum machines, if at all. There are over 700 sounds, the CD is 73 minutes long. Each sound is played at least twice so you can get your levels together. Where a machine had additional controls such as "accent, snappy, ADSR" the guys may fiddle and may give you variations. For example the TR-808 kick/bass drum sound has about 4 variations. The machines covered are... It seems that many people are lurking out there, too shy to post something of an EPSie nature. Don't be shy ask a question, post an article. I will give out some useful info...Many people are looking for good mics to use for sampling with their EPS's with the usual proviso that it should have flat 20-20 kHz frequency response and cost $20. Well you can get close with the TANDY PZM mics, check them out they represent the best value for money in any mic. They are not Neuman's but they are $50-70 and sound very good. I know there is a mod floating around to make them even better. If you have more money to spend, and if you want a good all-singing-and-dancing mic to sample everything from nuclear explosions to termite scratchings get a condenser. Don't ask me which one specifically but get a condenser in the $400 plus range, the sales person may let you take a demo home. Alternatively hire the mic you think you want to buy, nothing beats a home test. By using a compression ratio from 4:1 to 10:1, one can get a good solid signal from the entire amplitude envelope of a sound - the "tinkling" sounds of glass shards landing on the floor are easily discerned, without losing the impact of the initial crash. i've found compression even more useful when recording vocals or sampling a human voice; it helps prevent preamp distortion by taking some of the edge off sibilants ("s" and soft "c" sounds), and can reduce the popping of "p" and "b" sounds. Of course, if the compressor also has a noise gate built in, that comes in very handy (though it's not necessary if you set the sampler to start recording from the input trigger). i've used a dbx 166 compressor/limiter/noise gate unit. i've worked with Yamaha compressors (which i thought sounded muddy) and the Aphex Compellor (which sounded great but seemed a bit pricey), and the dbx sounds great for the money. It's easy to become over-dependent on compression when sampling or recording to tape. i try to adjust everything for the best sound i can get _without_ compression first, then enable compression. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Joe Niski niski@reed.edu Computer User Services 503-777-7525 Reed College, Portland, OR 97202 :::::::::::::: eps/30 :::::::::::::: From snow.wv.tek.com!stank Tue Nov 26 17:50:01 1991 Return-Path: Received: by romulus.reed.edu (/\==/\ Smail3.1.22.1 #22.20) id ; Tue, 26 Nov 91 17:49 PST Received: by relay.tek.com id ; Tue, 26 Nov 91 17:40:11 -0800 Received: from orca.wv.tek.com by tektronix.TEK.COM (4.1/7.1) id AA03809; Tue, 26 Nov 91 17:42:48 PST Received: by orca.wv.tek.com (5.51/7.1) id AA02407; Tue, 26 Nov 91 17:39:15 PST Received: from localhost.TEK by snow.WV.TEK.COM (4.1/7.1) id AA24606; Tue, 26 Nov 91 17:36:52 PST Message-Id: <9111270136.AA24606@snow.WV.TEK.COM> To: eps@reed.edu Subject: Sampling mics Date: Tue, 26 Nov 91 17:36:51 PST From: stank@snow.wv.tek.com > A $50 mic, eh? Does someone have an idea about how these mics compare > with Shure SM57/58's? Do you get half the performance for half the price? I wouldn't use the SM58 (or '57) as a basis for comparison of sampler mic's. It's a serviceable mic when used for vocals in live performances, but it is certainly NOT known for having a flat response. In fact, most product literature I've seen plays up the fact that it has a very pronounced proximity effect, and a peak in the midrange (right where vocalists like it.) I haven't tried the PZM technology, but I can recommend the condenser mic's made by Audio-Technica. I use one for sampling, I don't have the model number with me (I'm at work) but I think it's an ATM-19 or something like that. It cost me about $120 on sale. If there's any interest, I can look up the specs and exact model number when I get home. I find that it is fairly accurate at normal studio (apartment bedroom) volumes, I haven't tried using it for anything that was really LOUD. All in all, I think condenser mic's are the way to go if you don't have to deal with really high volume (e.g. 100 watt Marshall stack, cranked, at 2", or a top fuel dragster at 2 feet) and you don't have to worry about it being slapped around by a performer. Hell, even the little $3 Radio Shack condenser element works pretty good if you don't mind an omni directional response characteristic and you can make your own body. I would say that the $3 Radio Shack condenser has a flatter response than an SM58, but it is not as sturdy, and of course there are the batteries to deal with. I should point out that I haven't been to Radio Shack recently, so I don't know if they still sell those condenser elements. I must admit that I used one in a live PA application (quite a few years ago) and was reasonably impressed, but we still stuck with our SM58's. stank :::::::::::::: eps/31 :::::::::::::: From explorer.dgp.toronto.edu!dgp.toronto.edu!sheasby Wed Nov 27 07:53:32 1991 Return-Path: <@explorer.dgp.toronto.edu:sheasby@dgp.toronto.edu> Received: by romulus.reed.edu (/\==/\ Smail3.1.22.1 #22.20) id ; Wed, 27 Nov 91 07:51 PST Received: by explorer.dgp.toronto.edu id <144262>; Wed, 27 Nov 1991 10:51:40 -0500 From: Michael Sheasby To: eps@reed.edu Subject: pzm mics Message-Id: <91Nov27.105140est.144262@explorer.dgp.toronto.edu> Date: Wed, 27 Nov 1991 10:51:38 -0500 we're using a LOT of the pzm mics at our lab, for video teleconferencing. They're really odd mics... it sounds impossible, but it makes very little difference how far away you are from the mic when you make a sound in terms of how the final product sounds. If you talk into ifrom 2 feet above it you sound roughly the same as you do from 10 feet away. I know that's rediculous from a physics point of view (believe me, I know)... but that's the way it is. That is why we're using them... just stick one of these mics anywhere in a room and instantly, the whole room is covered for audio. Unidirectional in the best sense of the word. they have to be placed on a flat, hard surface (like a window, door or table) for best effect. You can't just stick them wherever. I'm not sure that they are optimal for sampling, though... I've always considered the sony 635 the original tank all-purpose cardioid... that's what we used at the TV station I used to work at for all location work. I once left one on the roof of my car in sub-zero weather, drove home down a bumpy road, discovered it much later, and was able to use it without detectable damage. ---Mike. :::::::::::::: eps/32 :::::::::::::: From niski Wed Nov 27 12:30:40 1991 Return-Path: Received: by romulus.reed.edu (/\==/\ Smail3.1.22.1 #22.20) id ; Wed, 27 Nov 91 12:30 PST Message-Id: To: eps@reed.edu Subject: a "sample sampler" via ftp Date: Wed, 27 Nov 91 12:30:28 -0800 From: niski hi folks: Someone had requested to hear a few percussion sounds from the "Poke in the Ear with a Sharp Stick" CD-ROM i'd recently mentioned, so i figured i'd make them available to everyone (well, everyone who has a Mac and a means for getting samples to the eps). The file is called "poke.sit.hqx" (that's a binhexed StuffitClassic archive), and is available via anonymous ftp to reed.edu. It's in the directory pub/mailing-lists/eps/. Once you un-binhex and decompress the archive, you'll have 5 soundfiles which can be read by Alchemy, Turbosynth, and other Mac programs. i don't plan on making more sounds from "Poke" available this way, but am happy to put other samples here for ftp - email me directly if you have samples you'd like to make available, or if you know of any nice utilities for converting soundfile formats between Mac and MS-DOS formats. We can add sounds to the ftp collection until my local SysAdmin puts disk quotas on me. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Joe Niski niski@reed.edu Computer User Services 503-777-7525 Reed College, Portland, OR 97202 :::::::::::::: eps/33 :::::::::::::: From UALR.EDU!JABUSSEY Thu Nov 28 07:16:48 1991 Return-Path: Received: by romulus.reed.edu (/\==/\ Smail3.1.22.1 #22.20) id ; Thu, 28 Nov 91 07:16 PST Date: Thu, 28 Nov 1991 09:16 CDT From: Hard On The Beaver Subject: Programs to transfer samples from MS-DOS or Mac to EPS To: eps@reed.edu Message-id: X-Organization: University of Arkansas at Little Rock X-VMS-To: IN%"eps@reed.edu" Does anyone out there have a Public Domain (or not! I am about to jump on my Transoniq Hacker band-wagon so if you are not interested in TH just delete this article. For those of you who are a little fuzzy; when you got your new Ensoniq toy it should have had a copy of this magazine with it called "Transoniq Hacker". Once you had satisfied your inital urge to play the keyboard I hope you subscribed to TH. Anyway, on with the story, the following is a letter I sent to Ensoniq... Today I received my copy of Transoniq Hacker (TH) No 77: November 1991. In the "Random Notes" section there is an announcement that Ensoniq has decided to stop including a copy of TH with each new keyboard/module. (TH will continue, it does not "need" Ensoniq to include it in their equipment to sutvive, but I think "we" as Ensoniq users need TH). I would like to voice my support for TH and say that I am appalled by Ensoniqs decision. I understand that Ensoniq have agreed to continue placing a "flyer" from TH, however, how long will it be before even that is terminated? If they are making the decision to terminate TH placement for financial reasons I would suggest that it is a very short-sighted and unwise solution for the reasons I point out below. I would like to state unequivocally that it has been TH that has maintained my loyalty to Ensoniq products. Over the years I have purchased a Mirage, EPS and EPS 16 Plus and sold by encouragement to friends many other Ensoniq keyboards. The point I always stress to any Ensoniq user is that TH is an essential accessory to their instrument. I even encouraged my local Ensoniq dealer to subscribe to TH who now use this publication in their customer service. Most of the knowledge I have about Ensoniq products and how to deal with/use them is directly from TH or from people I have met through TH. Here in Australia I have endured buggy software, flaky hardware, poor after sales service and a total lack of useful information through the distribution network. Once again I stress it was the information and encouragement I received from TH that gave me the incentive to persist with Ensoniq equipment. Unfortunately I have watched many people dump Ensoniq gear because of the above mentioned problems. Contact with a magazine like TH minimizes the feeling that many first-time Ensoniq users get that they are alone with their problems. The friendly, informative, and open forum that is TH has created what I can only describe as an "Ensoniq Sub-culture". TH is performing a public relations service for Ensoniq that can not be replicated by any other means, and in my opinion has generated more Ensoniq support than any amount of advertising could. I am now in my 4th year of subscription, in the preceeding years I have moved from just using it's services (sending letters to "The Interface" section) to authoring articles. TH has allowed Ensoniq users such as myself to convey useful tips and novel uses for your technology to countless others, hopefully inspiring those who read the articles to more fully explore the creative potential of your instruments. Indeed, that was the case with me. I would urge Ensoniq to reconsider their decision in the strongest possible way. Let this not turn out to be another blunder the magnitude of the "keyboard inductor" saga. Regards Scott TH Address is.. Sorry about the delay in responding, I've got schedules and stuff to worry about here at work and I couldn't find the spec sheet as easily as I thought I could. Yes, I mentioned the audio-tecnica, I have the ATM11. It is classified as a "Unidirectional Fixed-charge condenser instrument microphone". It's a fairly good cardioid pattern mic, at least in my opinion. It is spec'ed as follows: frequency response 50-20,000 Hx sensitivity -56 dBm (0 dB = 1mW/Pascal) open circuit sensitivity 0.25 mV (-72 dB re 1V/dyne/cm^2) (1 pascal = 10/dynes/cm^2) EIA sensitivity -150 dB impedance 600 ohms nominal, matches 150 tp 1,000 ohm inputs max input sound pressure level 130 dB at 1% T.H.D. signal to noise ratio greater than 50 dB a 1 Khz, 1 microbar (1 pascal = 10 microbars) It uses a single AA battery and claims a 5000 hour battey life. Personally, I haven't used it enough to verify the battery life, I tend to pull the battery out when I'm not using the mic and they invariably end up in my walkman. As far as it's acoustic characteristics go, to my ear it is a very natural sounding microphone. It doesn't seem to color the sound in any way. I haven't used it in live sound or field recording so I can't really say how rugged it is, but it seems to be rather well constructed. It takes a standard XLR cable (not supplied) and it comes with a nice snap-in stand clamp, carrying case and soft vinyl pouch. I also don't know how well it does with very loud sounds, personally I don't plan on ever (intentionally) getting very close to the max 130 dB limit it claims, but I can say that I have never heard it distort in any of my home recording work. Given the characteristics of this microphone, I have to ask myself why someone would pay the $1000+ price tag of a Neuman (I'm sure I butchered the spelling, the name is pronounced "noy-man"). Perhaps there are some subtle nuiances that make a difference, but for my purposes the ATM11 is good enough. Oh, I almost forgot, I paid $96 for it at a local music store's "valued customer" sale, which as we all know, is simply a way to get all the people that ever actually bought anything more than a guitar pick into the store at the same time to start a buying frenzy. stank :::::::::::::: eps/41 :::::::::::::: From psy.uwa.oz.au!scott Mon Dec 9 21:38:06 1991 Return-Path: Received: by romulus.reed.edu (/\==/\ Smail3.1.22.1 #22.20) id ; Mon, 9 Dec 91 21:37 PST Received: by wapsy.psy.uwa.oz.au (5.61+IDA+MU) id AA04201; Tue, 10 Dec 1991 14:37:01 +0800 Date: Tue, 10 Dec 1991 14:37:01 +0800 From: scott@psy.uwa.oz.au (Scott Fisher) Message-Id: <9112100637.AA04201@wapsy.psy.uwa.oz.au> To: eps@reed.edu Subject: TH and Ensoniq I'm still on that bandwagon... Interestingly it is still possible to select wavesamples from the EPS's own keyboard. To select wavesamples via MIDI the EPS has to be in OMNI mode. So, is this a bug? omission? feature? I suspect EPS module users would find this a pain as they would have to always switch from MULTI to OMNI mode when they are editing wavesamples while sequencing. I have had several frustrating months trying (in vain, up to now) to get a correct and complete sysex document for the EPS 16+ from Ensoniq. My decision to purchase the EPS 16+ was based on first ordering and reading the sysex document as distributed by Ensoniq. What I have since learned is that this document fails to accurately describe the behavior of the EPS 16+ sysex exchanges. Perhaps many of you have had similar problems with the document or the company. I have read the eps-digest1 file, but there is not really much along these lines there, so let me propose a collaborative project. I have one overriding interest, which is to obtain correct sysex documentation. The best way would be for Ensoniq to provide its customers with the detailed sysex interface to its equipment. I would be interested in consolidating the efforts of other EPS 16+ owners in bringing our needs (and Ensoniq's failure) to the attention of whatever administrative level at Ensoniq is necessary to get things moving. Any suggestions how this might work most effectively? As a secondary issue, assuming Ensoniq will continue to be uncooperative in this regard, I would like to consolidate the collected knowledge of those owners/users of EPS 16+ equipment into as complete documentation as we can develop. I have only limited experience at this point, but I would like to share what I have learned with net readers, and ask that those of you who have documented EPS 16+ sysex command structures to do likewise. Perhaps all of this can be collected together into a sysex reference which we all could share. There is probably someone much more qualified than I to do this, but if no one volunteers, then I will do the best I can to combine in some reasonably understandable format the information which is contributed. As a first step in this direction, I would like to share the contents of a letter I wrote Ensoniq back in June 1991, detailing the discrepancies which I have documented in the use of the "GET PARAMETER" command. I have not moved beyond this command, fearing the worst (that other commands are similarly incorrectly documented) and exhausted by about 50 hours it took to collect and verify just this set of data. The letter consists of a narrative and a tabulation of byte sequences which are not according to the sysex documentation. The narrative of the letter explains how the data were collected; at the end of the data are some explanatory footnotes which expand some areas of the data listing. I invite any interested collaborators to join me in this project. Bob Conley P.O. Box 28 Tijeras, NM 87059 USA (505) 846-4660 (Work) (505) 281-3354 (Home) conley@uservx.plk.af.mil <<=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Letter to Ensoniq -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=>> 6 June 1991 I have an Ensoniq EPS-16 PLUS which I am attempting to interface to a PC/AT class personal computer using a Roland MPU-IPC-T MIDI interface. I am designing a suite of software programs for full remote operation of the EPS-16 PLUS, and I have been unable to reconcile the behavior of my unit with the information in the "Ensoniq Performance Sampler External Command Specification", dated October 4, 1990 (MKB2), which is claimed by the individual at Ensoniq who mailed it to me to be the External Command Specification for the EPS-16 PLUS. The operating system I am using is the one shipped with the unit, Version 1.10. One of the programs I have written requests the EPS-16 PLUS to return a parameter value, using the "GET PARAMETER" command. When the parameter number is sent as hex bytes $34 $00 (Free System Blocks, External Command Specification page 40), the EPS-16 PLUS responds with the correct "PUT PARAMETER" command and correct parameter value. When I try parameter number $34 $01 (Free Disk Blocks, External Command Specification page 40), the EPS-16 PLUS fails to respond correctly. I have enabled MIDI SYSEX from the EPS-16 PLUS buttons, and caused the unit to transmit a "PUT PARAMETER" for both Free System Blocks and Free Disk Blocks. The Free System Blocks command arrives at the computer as described in the External Command Specification, but the Free Disk Blocks command arrives as hex bytes $34 $0A, a parameter number byte combination not listed in the External Command Specification. I have catalogued all parameter/value pairs which I know how to generate from the EPS-16 buttons. I find there are numerous differences in the behavior of the EPS-16 PLUS from what is described in the External Command Specification (57 commands with a conflict of parameter number, 48 commands with conflicting parameter values). Naturally, I need complete and accurate documentation to accomplish my programming projects. It is curious to note that those commands listed with a "direct dialing number" in the Musician's Manual have that number as the SYSEX low byte when received by my computer; commands which the Musician's Manual instructs to "scroll using the arrow buttons" arrive with a SYSEX low byte of $0A or higher (decimal 10 or higher). I take this as consistent with a design which allows only a single decimal digit "direct dialing number". In this sense my unit behaves in a manner agreeing with the Musician's Manual, and the External Command Specification is in conflict with both my unit and the Musician's Manual. Listed in the attachment are those commands with a parameter number or parameter value different from what is documented in the External Command Spec, organized according to the "Edit/xxx" button sequence which generates the corresponding PUT PARAMETER command. Under the column labeled "I get" are the two hex bytes received at the PC which encode the parameter number (SYSEX high and low MIDI bytes); under the column labeled "Spec says" are the two hex bytes as documented in the External Command Spec, transformed by multiplying the high byte value by 4 and converting to hex as described in the External Command Spec, page 40. Following each command are listed the parameter values which differ from the description given in the External Command Specification; the format for parameter lines is "name_of_value = xxxxxx", where "name_of_value" is what the alphanumeric display on the EPS-16 PLUS shows, and "xxxxxx" is a 6-digit hex representation for the 24-bit complete parameter value which is sent over the MIDI interface encoded as two 12-bit words as explained in the External Command Spec, page 6. (If no parameter values are shown in the listing, then either the parameters are in full agreement with the External Command Spec, or the command itself is not found in the External Command Spec). The name of the command or parameter as it is shown in my listing is taken from the front panel display of the EPS-16 PLUS (frequently this differs from the actual wordage or spelling found in the Musician's Manual and the External Command Spec). Could you please help me to obtain a complete and accurate description of the EPS-16 PLUS MIDI interface protocol? I need to have documentation for all aspects of the MIDI interface, including transmission of wavesample data, sequencing control, and configuration commands. My choice to purchase the EPS-16 PLUS was based for the most part on the External Command Spec, which I ordered and read prior to purchasing the unit. Needless to say, I am disappointed and frustrated to find that the documentation is causing so much difficulty and so many delays to my projects. If there is a later version of the operating system, could you also provide me with a new OS disk? <<=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Data Attachment to the Letter -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=>> Discrepancies Between the EPS-16 PLUS and the External Command Spec General Notes: * "(OK)" under the "I get:" column means that the parameter number is in agreement with the external Spec, but there is a problem with a parameter value as noted * "Not listed" under the "Spec says:" column means that my unit (and the Musician's Manual) show an entry which is not found in the External Spec * Specific, numbered notes are described at the end of the listing - Any suggestions how this might work most effectively? Welcome Bob. Thanks alot for the informative (and correct!) posting. One thing to remember about the EPS external command specification that they send you for your EPS 16 Plus, and that is it is realy the EPS "classic" external command specification with a few bits tacked in for the 16 Plus. Unfortunately the external command spoecification does not match the EPS "classic" either. Sorry I can't help you with your quest at the moment, good luck. I noticed the following in rec.music.synth. I am posting it here to see if I can inspire anyone to do something similar for the EPS. I'm a psychologist so don't look at me :-) I do have heaps of samples I'd be willing to share if someone provides the mechanism to do it tho. Anyhow here is the article and program, uuencoded and zip'd for PC's ------Article starts here-------- This is a tool for owners of Roland S330, S50, and S550 samplers that I whipped up over the holidays. It allows reading the sampler disks into dos files (and the reverse), listing patch and tone contents, duplicator mode, and also a binary record writing mode for use with your own data manipulation routines. Hi all, I have a 16+ with the ME-16+ memory expander, but have found that even this is not enough memory for what I'd like to do (how much is enough? more than you have, of course). So I was wondering if any one out there knew about any third party expanders which have more than 1 extra meg. I've contacted Ensoniq and they say there are no plans for any additional memory expansion for the 16+, so as not to cause problems with the SCSI interface. As a side note I would like to add a hard drive sometime, so hopefully the expansion will support a SCSI port. Anyone know anything, or am I asking too much. I'd hate have to sell my EPS to get something with more memory. Thanks in advance, Jay Bromley jaywb@tybalt.caltech.edu :::::::::::::: eps/48 :::::::::::::: From psy.uwa.oz.au!scott Thu Jan 9 17:32:48 1992 Return-Path: Received: by reed.edu (/\==/\ Smail3.1.22.1 #22.20) id ; Thu, 9 Jan 92 17:32 PST Received: by wapsy.psy.uwa.oz.au (5.61+IDA+MU) id AA12944; Fri, 10 Jan 1992 10:31:37 +0800 Date: Fri, 10 Jan 1992 10:31:37 +0800 From: scott@psy.uwa.oz.au (Scott Fisher) Message-Id: <9201100231.AA12944@wapsy.psy.uwa.oz.au> To: eps@reed.edu Hi Again, I Just read the following in the December issue of Transoniq Hacker... "Waveboy Industries announces the WAVEBOY ALGORITHM SERIES for the EPS-16 Plus. For the first time new effects algorithms are avaliable for the EPS 16 Plus. Each waveboy disk contains a collection of effects which are not avaliable with the EPS operating system. These effects can be added to any sound or bank by simply loading them uop from disk (these are not sampled sound effects, but new algorithms for the DSP chip). The entire series will include AM, FM and waveshaping synthesis, multipart combinations of FX, 44 kHz versions, EQ, resonant filters and other new FX. The first disk in the series is the Parallel Effects Disk. These 15 algorithms are designed tequencing applicationsi, where different sounds need different FX. Busses 1 and 2 are treated as 4 mono inputs to four parralel FX. (Any resemblance to the DP-4 is purely coincidental) Each input and each effect is separately pannable. The FX include chorus/flanger, guitar effect chain, delay and reverb/ambience. The WAVEBOY PARALLEL EFFECTS DISK is avaliable direct for $33 (US). OS add $6 (US) For more information, quantity pricing and requests for custom algorithm development , contact : Waveboy Industries, PO Box 233, Paoli, PA 19301, PH 215-251-9562." So there you have it, looks like someone beat Ensoniq to releasing some new FX algorithms. The standard disclaimer applies in that I know "nothing" about waveboy Industries and have never seen the product they are advertising. Looks interesting tho.
