Without forced-air cooling, the heat sink is incapable of satisfactorily dissipating the heat generated by the EPS' circuitry. This is exacerbated when the EPS rests on a solid surface (as opposed to a typical keyboard stand). I have had my EPS repaired once (under warranty) as the result of a noise problem it began having about seven months after I bought it. There EPS would behave fine when it was first powered up, but as the electronics warmed up, it would get a gradual buildup of noise, static, and a whine whose pitch was approximately E4 (on a piano). This noise became intolerable, and since the unit was still under warranty, I sent it in to get fixed. I began to have this problem again recently, and this morning I decided to put a fan near the heat sink to see if cooling the unit down would fix the problem. It did. I am considering attaching a small fan to the EPS in order to avoid this problem (and any further damage to the EPS' electronics). Are there any EPS-16 owners whose units begin to act strangely after they have been running for a while? Is the EPS-16 heat sink very hot when this happens? It seems that Ensoniq has failed to learn their lesson in the EPS-16, but I would like to hear the opinions of other EPS and EPS-16 owners. If that is the case, I question the competency of the designers of the EPS hardware. Knowingly designing consumer-grade (i.e. not specially designed heat-tolerant) circuitry to approach the temperature of boiling water is irresponsible, and it drastically degrades the life span and performance of the hardware (as many frustrated EPS owners have discovered). >Although it is supposed to get hot[,] this can cause problems, [sic] your >solution is a good idea. Either I'm not currently on the list, or there is a serious lack of activity. Anyway, I've got a question for all of you out there, has anybody found a really good, warm piano sound? I've got several piano sounds, some commercial, some PD, but nothing is really quite what I need. Come to think of it, I could type up a list of what I've got, and what I think of it, in case somebody else is searching too. I've seen that Rubber Chicken offers a Piano! sound for something like $7.00 with a money back guarentee that it's the most awesome piano sound you've heard. Has anybody bought this yet? I guess for $7.00 it's not that big of a risk anyway. By the way, has anybody else heard of Neanderthal Organizational Techniques? It's a great PD library of EPS sounds. If you send them a blank formatted disk, they'll fill it full of sounds for 40 cents each. You can't beat that! Even buying the disk from them it's only like a dollar. I don't have the address with me right now, it's at home, but if somebody else has it you might want to post it. Or if there's interest I can bring it in and post it later. Later! These really loud BANGS, which sounded a lot like lightning kept comming through the PA. The sound tech insisted that it was comming from the EPS. Theses bangs had never happened before and have never happened again. Just as a little background, we were using a Nady wireless mike, the EPS and a Simmons SDS9 MIDI trigger setup. The MIDI cables and power cables were being run through a "tube" that grouped all of them together for less clutter. I can't figure any logical reason for this to happen. What i'd like fixed in 1.2 for EPS16+: - Sys-ex load/save without instrument erasing - Kill that stupid click sound and replace it with a better one - A debugged "resample with effect". - Better naming options (eg. use keyboard instead of cursor for entering letters, as in the vfx-sd). - Fix the slider/cursor problem. Mine likes to jump and is not really predictable in its action - Fix the disk labeling system and bank loading so it's enough smart to handle multidisk sounds (at present it isn't). What would be a big jump for EPS16+: - Time stretch option. This really is important for heavy-sampling. I wouldn't care about one minute processing delay for a 1 second sample. In a few words: just do it! - A way to go beyond the 8 instruments at once and a way to expand memory. 2Meg these days is not that huge amount of memory. This is from a description of the EPS/EPS-M O.S. 2.40 update: ---------- TAP TEMPO If you are like many musicians, it may be easier for you to imagine the tempo that you would like a sequence to run by snapping your fingers or tapping your foot rather than picking a tempo number on the screen. For this reason, a feature has been added which allows you to set the tempo of the sequencer by tapping on the button whenever the TEMPO parameter on the EDIT/Seq*Song page is underlined, and the sequencer is running. This feature is active in PLAY, RECORD, or RECORD STAND-BY modes. ---------- --james :::::::::::::: Date: Wed, 6 Nov 1991 13:44:10 +0800 From: scott@psy.uwa.oz.au (Scott Fisher) Message-Id: <9111060544.AA16985@wapsy.psy.uwa.oz.au> To: eps@reed.edu Subject: Rubber Chicken HD Drive. I can only assume that this is the infamous direct-mail group of Ensoniq Gurus that I signed up for about a year ago. YEA!....someone out there besides me owns one of these lovely -------... I have recently upgraded my EPS to 4x w/scsi and have noticed a sharp increase in what I can only deem crashes...(well what else do you call it when the sound module you are transmitting to gets a note on with no note off ?). I basically run into two types. one is when you are sitting at the keyboard and it will magically play a single note. From that point on, the key associated with the note no longer functions. 3 or 4 other notes will follow shortly after. heeeeerrrrres REBOOT! (boy I hate that guy). The other involves a midi note transmit with no note off. One of the big reasons I can't send a note off, is that my instrument panel (cute name huh?) is dancing a nice little jig, and the whole unit does a little meltdown. These aren't MAJOR problems, but I shudder to think what would happen if I ever got good enough to play in front of people. (just sit there and pretend that my youngest daughter has her hand pressed down on some keyboard hidden in the room....) All jesting aside, I have heard that these problems are caused by the increased load on the power supply. This is possible, as the heat sinks on the rear of the machine keep my coffee warm. The O.S. is 2.42 (from ensoniq) and the 4x board was made by Marquist (sic) in Georgia. Very nice price, and easy install, does not hang out the rear of the EPS. My 144 REBOOT's are caused by turning the IBM PC off with everything else still on. Try disconnecting the midi in before you do any major powering down of any equimpent. p.s. Sounds like it may be time for you to get the keyboard "hardwired", you see there is this "inductor" card which does most of the keyboard controling and it is connected to the "mother" board by a flimsy connector. If you get this connector "hardwired" (soldering the things together) many problems like the above dissapear. This "hardwiring" should be done free by Ensoniq as they recognise it's their "fault". As a side note; this year all EPS's are hardwired at the factory. Ensoniq now employs their first full time "QUALITY CONTROL OFFICER" :-) Also Check that you do not have a MIDI loop that can sometimes upset the EPS as it is basically having a problem with feedback but of MIDI data. > All jesting aside, I have heard that these problems are caused by the >increased load on the power supply. This is possible, as the heat sinks on >the rear of the machine keep my coffee warm. The O.S. is 2.42 (from ensoniq) >and the 4x board was made by Marquist [Maartists?] in Georgia. The power supplu gets to "egg frying" temparature on all EPS's. In summer it is a good idea to point a fan at the heat sink. It may be the added drain on your power supply, but it could be a whole lot of other things too. See what happens after you get your keyboard hardwired. Also I know a few machines that when they get too hot they start crashing (usually during hot summer days) putting a fan on the heatsing seems to solve the problem. What is the purpose of selecting wavesamples from an external controller? - Boris :::::::::::::: Date: Fri, 8 Nov 1991 11:33:33 +0800 From: scott@psy.uwa.oz.au (Scott Fisher) Message-Id: <9111080333.AA21803@wapsy.psy.uwa.oz.au> To: eps@reed.edu Hi Folks, As I have been asking a lot of questions and getting help from people I thought I'd post this to give something back... Yesterday I was left alone in my local store for about 20 minutes with a KORG T3 EX. I enjoyed it's percussion waveforms, and I was thinking to myself... MMmmm it's sitting next to this EPS16 Plus. I don't have time to sample it ... AH HA! an Idea... I'd sample the raw wavetable with the FX off and then split this up into a kit later. So I turned off the FX on the T3 plug'd it into the EPS 16 Plus set the sample rate to 44.6 kHz filter 20 kHz and proceeded to sample the percussion wavetable as a contiguous sound. It was about 1.3 Meg and lasted 15 seconds. So I normalized the gain and saved this to disk. It was all over in 5 minutes. Now I had 15 minutes left to do the same with the EMU procussion and the SR-16 and the SD-1 :-) When I got home I had 15 seconds of audio that somehow I had to turn into a drum kit with each sound occupying its own layer and wavesample. The original sample instrument I will call KORG, KORG LAYER 1 WS 1 as KORG is a whole bunch of drum sounds strung together I wanted to make a kit out of it. I'll call the new instrument I made KIT. What I did is... A) select KORG LYR 1 WS 1 and [edit][wave] adjust the sample start and end points till you have just the sound you want rather than a collage of bips, booms & bops. Write down the address of WS START and END on a bit of paper ie ws start = 35671 (10) ws end = 35583 (14) B) create a new instrument [command][instrument] creat a new layer and create a new wavesample. call it KIT. We now have KIT layer 1 ws 1 and it is a looped buzzing baby square wave. Don't wory this will be overwritten with data later. C) Select KORG with KORG sample start and end set to where the sound you want starts and ends go... [command][wave] copy parameters [enter] from KORG layer 1 ws 1 to KIT layer 1 ws 1 [enter] Now listen to KIT WS 1, it will be a blip of a square wave, it has been given the dimensions of the WS start and end of KORG but contains the square wave data, that's why it now 'blips" cause it is an unlooped square wave occupying the beginning of a blank piece of memory. D) Get the data from KORG and put it in KIT, [command][LFO] copy data [yes] It will now ask for the start and end address of the data you want to copy (thats why you wrote it down) copy data from KORG lyr 1 ws 1 to KIT lyr 1 ws 1 [enter] That's it now KIT has a snippet of the sound that was from the long 669 k sample that was KORG...you will need to set the keyboard range [edit][pitch] and adjust the pitch of the new wavesample. I also made sure I had the Ensoniq drum-map handy so I put all the sounds in the right places :-) Now to repeat the procedure simply create new wavesamples on KIT and copy the stuff from KORG into them. Simple :-) Not that the manual was super helpfull :-) Regards Scott. _______________________________________________________________________________ Scott Fisher [scott@wapsy.uwa.oz] PH:(09) 380 3574. _--_|\ N Department of Psychology / \ W + E University of Western Australia.
